Is Bittorrent worth getting?

Lots of things are on Bittorent recently. Is it worth installing?

Indeed. There's no spyware or anything in it. And it's fast. Faster than say, Kazaa.

It's how a lot of large files are distributed nowadays.

I use bittorent to, but I must say its deceptively simple. I was expecting some complicated program, lol.

If I were to make video, could I seed a torrent and host the connection here? Just a thought. Totally legal, totally mine of course. No violation of intelectual property rights. And, if so, how do I make those files?

BitTornado is better...gives you more settings and information...uses the same protocol however. It's a completely transparent install...it's free except for a first-time nag screen (BitTorrent Official Client only)

I don't know why but everytime I go to the site, I am ask to pay then when I get past that....I download the program. Sadly, everytime I'm in the middle my connection is lost.....has anyone else had this problem by any chance ?

I would reccommend downloading an experimental version, the real version tended to do that to me...

I only get that every once in a while from only one site. I use BT for all my downloading and I love it. My favorite thing is that if your connection gets cut or you have to stop the download, it resumes where you left it the next time you start the download.

Wehehehe! I agree! Having been a Bittorrent user for many months I must say that BitTornado is better. It lets you control how many people upload from you and how fact they can upload. Which is especially nice when you are sharing the connection with someone else (like I currently am) and the excessive uploads that can sometimes take place mess up the connection for the other person.

Also I personally get annoyed when someone is uploading from me (hogging all my bandwidth) at 50kbps and I'm going downloading from some else at 0 to 1 kbps. -_- It gets really old after awhile, and Bit Tornado lets you curb that from happening.

Ok for those of you that don't know Bittorrent (and it's copycats like Bittornado) is a file sharing program like Kazaa only better. You see it let's you share parts of a file rather then waiting for the whole thing to download before you start sharing. Basically this means that you get the file faster because you can download all the parts from people that don't even have the whole file yet! And as some people have mentioned you can stop the download and come back later and it will start downloading again from where it had been cut. This is why it is so popular for large file releases like fansubs, maga scanlations, etc.

And yes you will get the "have you donated yet?" pop up window. And actually the little page lies, bittorrent is no longer his full time job. I almost did an assigment about it once so I read some articles. He was really hurting for money about a year ago but now he gets about $50 a day from donations and he's working with a game company if I remember correctly to use the Bittorrent technology for their online gaming and doing several other things as a real job. So in my opinion he's no longer hurting for money, and he's not paying for any of the bandwidth used to torrent the files anyway. If you are feeling extra generous donate him some $$ but otherwise don't feel guilty not donating, he's not on the poverty line or anything.

I love BitTornado and I would definately recommend it over the original bittorrent. I think anyone who has used both of them would say the same thing ^_^ and the light thing (it shows how the condition is, like if its yellow, your ports are closed or you're behind a firewall, and blue is that there are no complete files being seeded) is especially helpful.

No donation notices for BitTornado either! W00T!

I downloaded Bit Torrent...I ingored the pop-up page about that guy declaring donations be made to him. Anyways--I checked the folder the program was downloaded into and I still cannot get it going. Is there an executable file ? Where do you run it at ?

ok... I have been successfully using this program for a few days now (it hated my other computer... luvs this one tho). I have one problem... what if you can't find a .torrent file for something? I can't find any from my fav musicians!
meh... in that case BT doesn't work so well.

Actually, it would be best that you did not, unless you're providing links to unlicensed fansubs. Almost all, if not all, BT search engines carry illegal roms, etc.

Someone can correct me (and please do) if I'm wrong, but I think the software--WinMX, Kazaa, Bittorrent--itself isn't illegal, it's what you download. I mean, theoretically if I put up a bunch of my artwork on WinMX, what would be illegal about downloading it?

right, right... it's downloading software without paying that's wrong...
And I got a big kick to the butt for trying to do that this week... tried downloading a huge archive of cdimages (3700 megabytes) and it didn't work... after about a week of download time. That's the last time I'm trying that.

Well, Personally, I think Bittorrent's ok. yes, you can download licensed manga/anime, but only if someone willingly puts it up. but it really depends on how fast your comp is. my new one runs ok, but it still took me about like 7hr just to download 60mb of stuff. It's ok if you can keep your computer on for a long time.... but you gotta upload something if you want to download something...it's only fair exchange...I guess..

BitTorrent itself is not illegal - if you go to Mandrake Linux they have perfectly legal ISOs for download, as well as other Linux distributions. Other companies are starting to realize the usefulness of BitTorrent and are offering torrents as well.

And the only reason you need a fast computer is if you stop a (large) download and start it again - it CRC checks itself to make sure you downloaded the right data (it also does this while downloading)...on a 400Mhz machine cheching a gigabyte, it's brutal.

Also, if you're using Windows 98, do not have more than one or two download running at a time. The stack fills up and freezes your computer because BitTorrent makes many connections. Windows 2000 and XP don't have this problem. (Or you could use Linux...no problems there :sweat:

)

And internet connections - on downloads that I get I'm very lucky to get 25Kb/s on 10Mbps DSL...a lot of people wanna download big files with 56k...and it doesn't help that I can't accept incoming connections (NAT)

I tried to use that program to make my own torrents for the songs I had made... It didn't work... I have to upload it to a "tracker service" and none of them will let me... It's annoying...

Hey Bob,
I think it depends on where you upload too. You can always put a link up on a website, and let google check it for you. You may not show up in the main bt search engines at first, but it's better than nothing (IMHO).

They had a list of trackers, and none of them let me connect... So, why do I need to connect to a tracker? Why can't I just be the tracker so I don't have to get permission to upload my files?
