Ranma 1/2 manga -- which ones?

Postby zoupzuop2 » Sun Jun 20, 2004 11:16 pm

Okay... here goes.
Tomorrow, after I do some chores to get some cash, I'm biking down to "Borders", where they have, like, a BAZILLION graphic novels:drool: , with many of the Takahashi series. This being my first-ever graphic novel, I intend for this to be one of my personal favorites: Good 'ol Ranma 1/2.;)

I'm VEEERRRRY aware that a LOT of the R1/2 Manga is totally FILTHY:shady: . Thus, I need information on which ones would be safe to have around my house. My mother, being pentecostal (in action, not in denomination), has researched Ranma 1/2... and did not like what she saw:wow!: . Not one teensy bit. I'm trying to make us BOTH happy by choosing a volume that's clean enough for her to approve of.

So...

Any ideas?
Shoorajin? What about you? I hate to impose at this hour, but I'm desperate.

Hi, if you want Shooby's opinion and guidance, why not PM him? ^_^ You'll get a quicker response that way.

I can't say anything coz I don't read Ranma.

I wouldn't say *filthy* but I would say, yes, there is occasional nudity in them. I assume that's what you're referring to.

However, I can't really help you with the manga much because I've only read a couple volumes of it -- my primary experience is with the anime series. Perhaps someone else might know, so I'm changing the title to make it a little more open.

I have volumes 1-10. When I get off work I'll check them out and repost. Like Shooraijin said, they aren't really filthy, but there is nudity. I'll have to reveiw them to see if some volumes are worse than others.

Thank you, everybody. I need all the help I can get.

(I only used "filthy" because I've been constantly lambasted all week about my opinion on anime and manga, thus that was just a wee slip of the mind... although I recall my parents using that word to describe it... My apologies all 'round...)

...good point.

I guess I just didn't want to impose too much, in private OR in public. Besides, this gives other fans/collectors of the series a chance to have THEIR say.

Here's my list of Ranma 1-10. Read Shooraijin's review of the series for more insight into what I mean by stuff like "Ranma doesn't know how to be a girl," and "Happosai moments."

1. Look at this one if you want a pretty good overview of what most of Ranma is like. A few bath scenes of Ranma changing back, and Ranma not having any notion of feminine modesty.

2. A bath scene. More of Ranma without modesty. This one leads into volume 3, which happens to be my favorite so far. If you can take the one chapter with some nudity of Ranma, then I would recommend this one so that you can read 3 and get the whole story.

3. No nudity at all. Best story in my opinion. Introduces Shampoo.

4. More bath scenes. During a fight, all of girl-type Ranma's clothes get torn off, but Akane comes to the rescue before we see too-too much (we see the chest and back side.

5. A slightly extended bath scene at the end.

6. Warning! Introduction of Happosai. Many "Happosai moments" and a very long battle at a public bath.

7. Happosai-esque raid on a girl's locker room (no nuddity, but girls in bras and gym shorts). Scene towards the end of Kuno trying to bath with girl-type Ranma, and maybe do a little more (Ranma actually encourages him because he's after something).

8. Another good one with no nudity. Introduction of Ukyo. A few Happosai moments.

9. Warning! This one could be really shocking. A portion of this story has to do with a girl who has a crush on Ukyo, and ends up with a crushes on Akane and girl-type Ranma too. All of them are appalled at this, Ranma even tries to lead her "onto the correct path." Girl-type Ranma dresses in a playboy bunny outfit. Extended hot springs bath scene with many girls and Happosai. For any Urusei Yatsura fans, there is a tribute to Lum in this issue.

10. No nuddity. A bath scene of Shampoo changing back, but everything is covered. Introduction of the principal.

Oh yes, something I forgot to mention about 9, but if you read it it will ruin the entire gag. Still it might be important to make an educated decision, so I'll leave it up to the reader to decide.
the girl who likes Ukyo and and girl-type Ranma is actually a guy who dresses up as a woman. So the real problem is actually cross-dressing, but you are led to believe otherwise until the very end.
It's that way in the anime, too. Despite the subject matter, I lament to admit I think it's one of the funniest episodes in that particular season.

Volumes 2 and 3 have always been my favorite. I have alot more, want me to skim through them tonight?

It is a really funny gag, and I liked that Ranma was trying to save her from going down the right path, but the first time I saw that episode my jaw almost hit the floor.

18 and 20 are pretty clean, 18 is pretty hysterical too.

It would appear Zoup that your mother already holds some preconceived ideas concerning Ranma 1/2. I am assuming that what you are wanting to do is purchase some of the cleaner issues to prove her wrong. Regardless, she even then may not move far from her stand concerning this series knowing that there is still some material in some of the series that is objectionable. I think you need to be ready for this should it occur. Your bringing the title into the home in itself may appear to her as being somewhat disrespectful of her oppinions which may open a whole new can of worms. You may want to think this purchase through carefully and if need be (for the time being anyway) seek out a title which would be more acceptable to her.

I agree with Rev. Doc. As long as you're not trying to prove to her that Ranma 1/2 is not objectionable, getting the cleaner volumes is recommended. I've never read it but I know that it shouldn't be in my library's children section...that's all I know though, sorry! ^^;

You could also edit it with a pen; add clothing to the nudity/use white-out. You could have your mother do it as well, if you want.

I just got volume 1. (And I've also only read the first 3 chapters so far...) There has been some nudity, but I didn't really have much of a problem with it. I don't think it was intended as fanservice. Anyway, just a little question. How many volumes are there?

38 volumes were released in Japan. Thus far, Viz Communications has released 26 here in the U.S.

3. No nudity. Minimal sexual content. I agree it is a filthy series. To much topless nudity. Thats why I gave it up.

Wow... so many posts since I last saw this thread! Allow me to elaborate on a few misunderstandings.

Rev. Doc, I'm not trying to prove ANYONE wrong. I just want to enjoy a series I find funny while managing to avoid excessive garbage. So far, there haven't been many qualms to the book laying around the house, and lately my mom's been looking into it. She DID have a pretty bad outlook on the whole series, 'cos she got her hands on, instead of the real Viz stuff...

... some H stuff. As in, not sponsored by Takahashi.

Not all is bad news, though... if my parents are firm on their position against the series, there is one from the same author/artist that involves boxing... and christianity. (Not saying she's christian or ever was, but... never hurts to dream)

CDLViking... you've been an amazing help. Actually, I KNEW what the situations were for most of the manga (I only got vol. 6 because I thought the chapter amounts were equal between Japan and America, thus Vol. 6 in Japan is different from the American one, I've learned...) I've actually done a lot of research on the series before really delving into it. Maybe not enough info at the wrong time on mine own part, but... yeah. I knew a good 3/4 of the characters almost Personally before last summer. I've gotten well acquainted with the series for almost 3+ years now, getting my knowledge by going directly to Viz, looking up reviews in magazines, reading fanfictions (I still remember the fateful day of my first... citrus-fruit-labelled one, I dodge them with my life now), different synopses, and asking around the former comic store, now it's just a games 'n cards store.
