The first half, it was dark and had a great atmosphere. Then it started slowing down, and a few ideas felt misplaced. Overall I still recommend checking it out it if you where interested by the trailer.

The Devil at Your Heels. A Canadian documentary from 1981. Ken Carter is an aging stunt driver slash modern-day Icarus who wants to end his career with a bang by performing a mile-long rocket car jump over the St. Lawrence Seaway. Unfortunately he's a big talker but a lousy organizer, and his grand project becomes a five-year-long bog of Murphy's Law in action, crowned by a whimpering M-M-MONSTER FAIL. A very inspirational film that makes you appreciate the fact that no matter how hard you try, it's never going to be enough.

You can watch it on the National Film Board of Canada's Youtube Channel.

One of the last to the party--I finally got to see Avengers the other night. And watched it again the next night.

It was really great, and definitely lived up to the hype. And there are just so many little things it did that I loved.
Prime example: how the Black Widow/Hawkeye fight didn't become a cheesy/cheap "love conquers all" moment, when it very easily could've.
Also, Iron Man. And the Cap. And Loki. [s]Need moar Loki.[/s] Yup.

I want to apprentice myself to those writers, because they really pulled off something fantastic here.

Both are Joss Whedon things that have large amounts of what he does best: snappy dialogue, fantastic ensemble casts, and making a very tight plot that skillfully interweaves character growth/development with the story rather than breaking the story for it. Some of the best Firefly episodes have that same tight Avengers feel, I think.

Of course, the only other Whedon things I've seen are Toy Story and Titan AE so it's possible I have no idea what I'm talking about.

I watched October Baby last night. While it is a very emotional film, it's not one that I'd want to watch over and over. I'm glad to have seen it so I know what people who mention it are talking about, though.

its about Ginger and her sister who are two teenage sisters who happen to be very emo. The opening credits actually play over a montage of them dead it horrible grisly ways...but its actually fake for a school project. In their hometown a creature is killing animals, and while they are out to seek revenge on a girl Ginger, the oldest sister, is attacked. From their the film becomes about Ginger becoming a women, and also becoming a werewolf(hence the title) all the while her sister (who's name escapes me) tries to cure her with the help of their stoner friend.

If your interested in this film I will put the warning out that it uses a lot of strong language, quite a bit of gore, and some sexual content. Not a film for everyone but a really great film none the less

I... I watched part of the 1967 Casino Royale, a supposed James Bond spoof.

what this is i don't even

Its difficult to get through. How can a movie with such a fine cast (David Niven, Orson Welles, William Holden, Ursula Andress, Woody Allen, Peter Sellers, John Huston, George Raft, etc) be so... crummy...?

Has anybody seen Lawless? It came up on my radar a few weeks back, and I dedicated some time to go see it... and wow. GOOD movie!

It's kinda funny that most people (or Americans, at least) have already heard "the story" of the early 20th century American Prohibition, and it's assumed to all take place between 1920 and 1930, and that these were the days of Al Capone and The Commission. Then some awesome television series like Boardwalk Empire (also really, really excellent) depict the early days when none of that was established, and characters like Capone were small-time crooks. Here, in Lawless, we see the opposite of that, the tail-end of prohibition. Not only does the film's story take place place literal months before Prohibition was ended, at the onset of the Great Depression, but it also steers clear from the glamor, big cities, and speakeasies we usually think of with "Prohibition", and dives into the rural stretches of hillbilly territory. But it's genuine, based around (somewhat embellished) actual events, the characters are really endearing, and the acting is top-notch. Funny moments elicit the proper amount of chuckles and guffaws without altering the overall mood of the film, which is very dark, and very, very violent.

So, if you have a weak stomach, or just don't like a lotta blood, best give Lawless a wide berth. But if you want to see a **** good film, I highly recommend it.

I watched Capitalism: A Love Story for the first time today. It's a pretty candid look at how capitalism and the free market works, how they were gamed by certain people to lead to the great recession, and goes a bit beyond that at the end. It's a Michael Moore film, so some people are going to discount it on that basis alone, but I think it's worth watching and sheds light on a number of issues relevant to basic facts when you ignore some of the antic's Moore takes near the end of the documentary.

House on Haunted Hill - Great esthetic, really creepy atmosphere. The sudden appearance of one "ghost" really gave me a turn, though the copious amounts of prolonged screaming and some of the primitive effects could only make me laugh.

The Abominable Dr. Phibes - What an odd, creepy movie. I didn't quite follow how some of the murders fit with the plagues, but overall this was a very unique, creepy movie, if at times a bit cheesy and just kind of weird with its ideas of technology.

I tried watching Trick 'r Treat, but only lasted about 15 minutes. I want to glare meaningfully at the person who recommended this to me, because it hit all of my buttons in the worst possible way :shady: Unfortunately, it also looked to be the only movie of the lot that promised to be actually horrifying.

Ginger Snaps - Love the ironic title <3 I have a very odd response to this movie, not completely sure if I love it or not. It's very intense, that's for sure, and I feel like it's a brutally realistic take on how a situation like this would play out. I also loved the sister dynamic, and came pretty close to crying at the end :sniffle: Until the end when you can actually see the kind of pathetic-looking monster, they did the horror perfectly (not showing anything completely, just glimpses and sounds from off-screen). The point of the movie was to know what the matter was and move forward from there, but I feel like if it had still been a complete mystery as to what was going on, it would have actually been scary.

I'm not a fan of Moore, but I've always wanted to see this movie. Also, one reviewer suggested why the movie is subtitled 'A Love Story'.

The beginning has some content, some nudity and gore. At least that is my figuring. Also The anna paqin story has a bit of content as well but thats more like an hour in so I would also like the details of why this turned you off after 15mins.

Re-watched Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and remembered how awkward a lot of the acting is in that one :shake:

As for Trick 'r Treat, what turned me off was the gore with that lady at the beginning, the brief porn movie, the girls going to the party with the intent to find someone to sleep with (and judging from the foreshadowing, I assumed there would be more of that later on, and that it would get more explicit), and the fat boy puking all over the front steps. None of these things would be enough to prevent me from watching a movie by itself, but when every single one of the things I don't like seeing showed up one after another so early on in the movie, I couldn't keep going. I prefer my horror to be less graphic and more...psychological, I guess. When a movie can manage to be horrifying without resorting to all of these things, I can respect it a lot more. This movie just seemed like the kind of horror that goes more in your face rather than just thumps in the dark.

Half-Blood Prince was definitely the weak link in the HP movies.

Went back to rewatch to see what you were talking about for this.
The girls for the party? Yep, they're trolling for guys, but there's absolutely no sex. This movie subverts that horribly. Thier storyline is also the *only* one that also has some partial nudity, but... if you've ever seen The Shining, it's like that bathroom scene where Jack is kissing the dead lady... not titillating in the least, more horrific than anything else. It's also very, very bried. There's only one more scene with the same level of gore as the woman - most of the other violence is simply implied. The boy puking... well, yeah, that's gross, can't help that one, but he's the only one that gets sick or anything like that.
I think the show put the most graphic parts in the beginning, but after that it's rather tame.

EDIT: Forgot how some of this really is dark humor - the story about the boy got a number of horrified giggles out of me once again!

Prometheus... I have to say I'm in the camp that was disappointed by this. If I had no idea this had anything to do with Alien, maybe I would have liked it better. It just seems the more I think about this movie, the more I dislike it. First, the alien beings... the giant tall man creatures... totally underwhelming. Second, there was no actual anything chasing them or really causing much dread. You had the robot guy... whom you never even know his motives. Since he was the driving threat for most of the movie, it would have been nice to have a coherent reason or plan for all this and let us in on it. The movie totally felt empty. It's like Ridley Scott
started with the Space Jockey and Xenomorph and said, hmm... "How did this get here?"... And worked backwards from there so the whole movie really didn't have much of a point other than to say, this is why there was the crashed space jockey in the first film and this is how the first Xenomorph came to be.
And then didn't think much about anything else so long as it ended with that point. There were a some pretty cool parts and the movie did build a nice atmosphere... too bad the pay off felt so flat.
