PG-13 .. should 13 year olds really be watching some of this stuff?

Talk about anything in here.

As for the topic, I'm skeptical of the standard rating system in general. It's best to get a review secondhand and that way you have a better idea of what the actual content is. ... Hm. I sound like I'm shooting in the dark here with opinion.

Yeah, but pretty much 99% of movies that have raunchy sex scenes are movies that people shouldn't watch in the first place...

I dislike sex, but I will never understand why our species has a greater aversion to seeing our own procreation over images like the one in the avatar above me, brutally and very graphically dripping with blood. It honestly took grave-digging this thread for me to really notice, but now that I see it, I am forced to ask. I'm a bit old fashioned, but is that avatar really rated PG-13 Dude? That's a tad bit graphic, even if I understand what it's supposed to represent. The passion of the Christ was rated R for a reason.

I never really cared about it being PG13 or not in the first place. Thinking about it now, I wouldn't think it's an R rated image, but to each their own.

Yeah, but pretty much 99% of movies that have raunchy sex scenes are movies that people shouldn't watch in the first place if they don't like that kind of content, so it's useless. All it can do is cut out content that has a purpose for being there (hence my mention of Schindler's List and American History X) or is largely pointless because people wouldn't be watching those kinds of movies in the first place.

Yeah, I think I mostly agree with you on this. There have really only been a few movies that were good that had a totally unnecessary scene in it (like Dirty Harry or Band of Brothers). Most movies with crap in them are just... crap. Like... 40 Days and 40 Nights shouldn't exist.

America generally is okay with violence in media but isn't too keen on sex. Tis a bit strange, and it speaks volumes about American culture.

Actually PG-13 was created because in the past, movies either got a G, PG, or R. There was no in between. Thus, if you watch older PG movies, you'll notice a lot more violence and such than in PG movies of today. Nowadays, PG is the new G.

BANG! And the thread is resurrected! It's heart was re-started by the defibrillators!
Okay, back on track. I think of ratings a bit more as guidelines, since it differs from person to person anyways. I remember once watching a PG movie when I was eight that scared me quite a bit. I guess what someone else was saying about there only being three ratings explains that. But I remember The Dark Knight totally creeped me out when I watched it, even though it was PG-13 and I was thirteen at the time.

I do agree that the movie ratings are rather off balance now at days. Alien vs. Predator was rated PG-13, and that is an EXTREMLEY gory, and bloody movie. Like others have said, America has more of a problem with sexy stuff than violence these days. But that just comes back to the overall point of this thread in general.

Guys, I'm talking about silencing the language in Avatar so you never knew they swore and removing violence so skillfully you wouldn't have known it was there in the first place. Plus, you can choose how much of the stuff you want screened out, like mild, moderate, or all sexual content. We rarely filter out all the violence. This way my sisters get to watch the classics like Back to the future and we can enjoy Avatar together. We don't watch sexy movies in the first place, we all think it's kind of gross in films.

So, should they be considered on the same standards on how they can negativley affect people? My dad is way more irked by sex scenes in movies than scenes of intense violence with blood and possibly gore, but that's just an opinion of ours.

@Sierra: Ditto. Except for, I do NOT like Avatar at all.

It varies from person to person. Personally, I have less problem with violence than sex in movies. Not that I want to see either, but alot of violence I've seen has been relatively mild compared to what you might see in reality (think ketchup, think ketchup, think ketchup).

... and I have heard of clear play, though I've never watched a movie with it used.

In my family we go by personal experience when looking at what to watch. Some kids just like more violent movies than others, so they watch them more and can handle them better. That's how it works in my family.

Not like they don't cut out some stuff for the DVD versions (and in the case of American films, tack on "extended scenes"). Stuff is often cut out in anime for the American releases.

In response to the "violence vs. sex in movies" comment, I believe there's a pretty large difference between the two. Seeing people kill other people isn't going to make me want to go get a gun and start shooting people, but sexual scenes can easily cause someone to lust... and lust can be quite a big problem to most people.
This is all my personal opinion of course, so feel free to disregard it.

I understand if someone is personally upset or uncomfortable with the sex and violence, but ignoring it is not gonna make it go away.

When I began watching PG-13 films I was actually surprised by how mild they were. I had expected a lot worse.

I watched my first PG-13 movie (that I knew was that rating) at the age of 13, convincing my dad that I was now old enough to handle it. Looking back, I probably chose the wrong movie, but it didn't stop me.

Granted, I saw all of Raiders of the Lost Ark at the age of 12 and it didn't bother me.

Congratulations on completely missing the point.
What I'm getting at is how insane it is to say that a little sensuality in a movie or some swearing is worse than the merciless bloodbaths you get in a lot of action movies.

No, but it can desensitize you to violence, and can increase your level of aggression. While you may not shoot people, seeing violent content can make you a more aggressive person and prone to argument or anger...which, while not as bad as murder, can be very detrimental. It's foolish and ignorant to think that seeing large amounts of violence is harmless to the human brain...and if it is, then seeing large amounts of sex is equally harmless. You can't have it both ways.

I won't doubt there are probably lots of connections between sex and violence in the media and increased desensitization and/or aggression in today's youth, but it's foolish to claim that the media caused those behaviors or habits. As I've said in a different thread, there is probably a strong connection between the two. But connection doesn't always equal causation.

Agreed. Media isn't the cause for everything, although it can be an influence. The media commonly becomes a scapegoat for many people.

Addressing the debate about sex vs. Violence
Usually violenc e is in a movie for a reason. It could be a war movie, or have well placed battles that serve plot devices, like the battle scene in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. However, a lot of sex scenes are just there for fan service, and ould have been dealt with another way. Same goes for swear words. If the film can do without it, it should, and that extends to violence too. Don't have gore just for the sake of having gore!
