Hymns you love...

Postby Saint Kevin » Sun Nov 20, 2011 9:53 pm

Hey folks,

Wondering what you're favorite hymns are. I always liked hymns because they tend to be rich in theology.

If you can think of any particularly adaptable to a barbershop quartet, it'd be cool if you link me to an arrangement or performance on youtube or somewhere, as I may get a quartet going to sing in hospitals and nursing homes.

Some hymns worth listening to:

Written recently: "He is Jesus," "Consider Him," and "My Jesus Fair"
Old school: "Complete in Thee," "Come Ye Sinners," and "Jesus Paid it All"

I'm liking stuff performed by these two groups at the moment:

Our lives are but a vapor, let us not let waste our time and breath on vanities, but let us spend ourselves for the Kingdom, seeking a better resurrection.

I like old school.
How Great Thou Art,
Holy Holy Holy,
and a whole list of others I can't remember at the moment.
- God is always with us, especially when we feel most alone.

Because He lives
A Mighty Fortress is Our God
Come Ye Sinners
Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing
The Wondrous Cross
"Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

"As the Deer" is amazing in a round. I can't find any videos of it in a round though. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TP5IRVIIrj4 The ending is the closest thing to it being in a round I can find.

"The Old Rugged Cross" has always had a special place for me. Mainly due to my grandfather. Other than that, I'm not a big fan of hymns in general.

Jesus Paid it All is a hymn I return to on a regular basis. It holds a high value in my heart and moves me to tears every time.

I also like How Great Thou Art.
Here's some others I'm surprised no one's mentioned:
"Amazing Grace"
"Ode to Joy"
"Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing"
"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you. I appointed you to be a prophet of all nations."
--Jeremiah 1:5

I mentioned that one.

Be Thou My Vision is another favorite of mine as well as It is Well with My Soul.

Ohhhh, I love hymns. There are so many good ones, it's hard to pick! It's the words that really get me; such good theology, and they really get my heart and mind in tune for worship. Here are some of my absolute favorites:

"Great Is Thy Faithfulness"

Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father.
There is no shadow of turning with Thee.
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not.
As Thou hast been, Thou forever wilt be.

"A Mighty Fortress Is Our God"

That Word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth.
The Spirit and the gifts are ours through Him who with us sideth.
Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also!
The body they may kill; God's truth abideth still.
His kingdom is forever.

"How Firm a Foundation"

The soul that on Jesus has leaned for repose
I will not, I will not desert to his foes.
That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake
I'll never, no never, no never forsake.

"The God of Abraham Praise"

The whole triumphant host gives thanks to God on high:
"Hail Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!" they ever cry.
Hail Abra'm's God and mine! I join the heav'nly lays.
All might and majesty are Thine, and endless praise.

"O Worship the King"

Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail
In You do we trust, nor find You to fail.
Your mercies how tender, how firm to the end;
Our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend!

...and there are many more I could name, but you get the idea XD
You can find out things about the past that you never knew. And from what you've learned, you may see some things differently in the present. You're the one that changes. Not the past.
- Ellone, Final Fantasy VIII

"There's a difference between maliciously offending somebody - on purpose - and somebody being offended by...truth. If you're offended by the truth, that's your problem. I have no obligation to not offend you if I'm speaking the truth. The truth is supposed to offend you; that's how you know you don't got it."

This is most definitely my favorite hymn. I don't know why, but I really really like it.
