Best Anime of 2010 2: 2011

What is the best anime of 2010?

Turns out, it was [s]FMA[/s] this:

How do we know? Because we voted!

What is the best anime of 2011?

That is a question we'll be asking ourselves in a few weeks time as the year draws to an end. There are many metrics and measures of quality we can look at, but in the end, nothing can beat a good old popularity contest. And how do we do that? By setting up a single-elimination tournament, of course! And hopefully, I've learned enough from last year that the results won't be as suspect!

I will be asking for nominations for anime. There is no restriction in how many you can nominate. In fact, I encourage you to nominate as many as you can. But what qualifies an anime of 2011? Very simple. In order to qualify, the anime must have aired (if it's a TV series) or had a first DVD/BD release (if it's an OVA or theatrical feature) in Japan between 1 January 2011 and 31 December 2011 inclusive.

Here are some examples from last year:
Kimi ni Todoke qualifies even though it aired in Fall 2009 because it finished airing in March 2010.
Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn qualifies even though it's not finished because it had at least one DVD release in 2010.
Star Driver: Kagayaki no Takuto qualifies even though it finishes airing in 2011 because it began airing in 2010.
Bakemonogatari hilariously qualifies because SHAFT is bad at planning and it aired some episodes in 2010.
Eden of the East does not qualify even though it got a North American release in 2010 because it aired in Japan in 2009.
Eden of the East Movie I: The King of Eden qualifies even though it was in theatres in Japan in September 2009 because it got a DVD release in March 2010.
K-ON! does not qualify because it aired in Spring 2009.
K-ON!! qualifies because it aired in Spring 2010.
Welcome to the Space Show does not qualify even though it was in Japanese theatres in 2010 because it does not have a DVD release in 2010.
Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind does not qualify even though it got a Japanese Blu-ray release in 2010 because it did not first get released in 2010.
Doraemon qualifies because it's always airing.
The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya qualifies even though the DVD hasn't been released yet because it will get a release in December 2010.

The final format and brackets haven't been decided yet; it definitely won't be exactly the same as last year and it'll be dependent on the number of nominations. However, the plan is to open voting for the match at 0000 EST until 2300 EST in this thread. Same deal with voting codes and fighting verbally amongst yourselves to defend your favourite show.

In order to nominate an anime, simply mention it. Again, don't be too selective; this is just the nomination stage. Nominate as many shows as possible, otherwise I will fill in the gaps with terrible, terrible anime that will make you regret not nominating more. Nominate shows that have already been nominated, because in the case of too many shows (ahahaha), the ones with more nominations will have priority; the rest will be subject to the random number generator, although I'm not sure we'll need this for this year yet. And if there aren't enough nominations, then obviously, no one is interested and the deadline will pass and no one will notice.

Nominations are open until Friday November 25 at 2300 EST

You do realize that if there are ties (yes, even with only one nomination), they could move forward and take the place of a show that someone actually likes. It has happened before.

[s]Also, let it be known that I will rig the contest to ensure iM@S wins if it gets a spot.[/s]

Okay, maybe it was my mistake to even facetiously include that suggestion in there, but since it basically amounts to trolling the tournament, I guess I have to make it clear that you should try to only nominate titles if you actually like them.

Obviously, I have no way of knowing whether or not you like a show, so it'll be up to my discretion whether a title gets removed or whether you'll have to live with the shame of nominating a title that you don't like and seeing it displace something you do.

You said to nominate as much as possible or else you would fill this event with Terrible anime. {And all the terrible anime are already here so there is nothing more you can put here.}
Also, I am not surprised with the huge amounts of Magica Votes but I wish that there were more Usagi Drop votes due to the fact that this was the most Mature anime Series this year.

Forgot Tegami Bachi, although it will never win. (cgmonsterswhy)

Lemme go finished Usagi Drop and I'll nominate it.

Also, someone mentioned Penguindrum. Are we allowed to nominate still running series?

Okay, fine, that was from last year when I wasn't sure that we'd have enough nominations. But, I will give you an example of what happened.
1 Tamayura
1 Otome Youkai Zakuro
1 Break Blade
1 Yumeiro Patissiere
1 Angel Beats!
1 Working!!
1 Katanagatari
1 Cross Game
1 Kimi ni Todoke
--- EVERYTHING BELOW HERE DIDN'T MAKE IT ---
1 SRW OG: The Inspector
1 Hidamari Sketch Hoshimittsu
1 The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya
1 Macross Frontier: The False Diva
1 Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai
1 Sengoku Basara Ni
1 Toaru Kagaku no Railgun
1 Fate/stay Night: UBW
1 Togainu no Chi
1 Giant Killing
1 Fortune Arterial
1 Uragiri wa Boku no Namae wo Shitteiru
1 Occult Academy

There ended up not being enough slots, so some anime didn't make it because there were too many nominations. Because they were tied, the ties were broken by a random number generator.

The moral of the story is make sure that every anime you nominate is one that you actually want in the tournament. Otherwise, someone will be **** if Seikon no Qwaser makes it in at the expense of something that they actually wanted.

That said, if you still REALLY want them in, go ahead, I guess. Just understand the weight of your actions, that's all.

Also, someone mentioned Penguindrum. Are we allowed to nominate still running series?

Yes, you can. There were a bunch that were last year.

Nominations Version 2:

I am going to nominate a lot of things because it's fun. I'm not interested in if they would win outright as much as I want to see if CAA thinks anime X is better than anime Y. Hot-blooded tournament fighting action!!!

Guilty Crown
[s]Un-GO[/s]

Tier lol
Fractale (the darkhorse!)

Not worried they'll win, but perhaps get into the competition at the expense of, say, Toriko or DD Hokuto no Ken. A real tragedy as you can plainly see.

Can't believe I forgot Kimi ni Todoke 2 +1 for that.

That's what I mean. Either stand behind the shows you nominate or don't.

As an example, you think Gosick is not a very good show, and that's your choice, but someone else likes it and also nominated it, so it's not going to fall to a tie and is probably getting in. I can see that happening with a few other shows.

So yeah, no nominations where I might have to guess about your intentions, because if it comes down to that, it'll get in even if you don't want it to.
