Automatic Mario

Postby Midori » Wed Nov 17, 2010 10:25 pm

I noticed there was a little bit of demand for my opinion on this last night in chat, so here's the thing.

So what is this? The title describes it pretty well. It is a modified Mario level that, once you start it, completes itself. Here's some good examples:

This one has a surprise ending!

And of course, the predictable timing of such levels means people have used them to create a percussion track to various J-pop tunes. Here's Luigi playing Dan-Jo-Dan-Dan-Jo-Dan-Jo

And of course to the inevitable question, what's my favorite?
It is actually a five-part series, the first of which can be found here:

The designer of these levels clearly put a lot of effort in making them clever.
If you have a NicoNicoDouga account, you can view the original here (in all its commenty glory):

There's a lot more videos like this on NicoNicoDouga than on YouTube.

What do you think?

I liked the nico nico douga medley version I saw. Since that one was about 11 minutes, I got bored with them after that. Looks like a LOT of work.

Oh I'm sorry, that was the wrong link!
Thank you for catching that Arneck! Yes, that has some language involved, which was why I intended to leave it out of my list...sorry. :|
Anyway, I've changed the link on my original post to what it was meant to be.

I think that one doesn't count, as you have to press the jump button to jump that high on the springboard, and have to hold another button to grab/hold the springboard and key, thus disqualifying them from being automatic. :p

I just watch the Nico Nico Douga medley ones, so the last one I watched was probably the Nanairo medley. I think I remember liking the one for the Ryuuseigun medley.

Some of the levels do require that you hold one or more buttons for the duration of the level, which, while not "purely" automatic, greatly increases the number of things you can do with the level. (You can always put an object on your controller or something.) And you can go that high on the springboard just from holding the jump button the whole time. You don't have to release and press it again.

Nice, I saw some really neat ones with really sweet songs years ago.
And this I pray, that your love would abound still, more and more with real knowledge and all discernment. Be prepared to preach the gospel at a moment's notice. Do you know the gospel well enough to do so yourself? Be ready.

It might be considered uncouth to dig this old thread from the grave, but I have a relevant thing to say. This automatic Mario video set to "Don't Stop Me Now" is one of the most amazing things in the universe, as it syncs the sound effects of not just one, but four automatic Mario levels to the music! The visuals are incredible, as well.
