My question is, why'd the choose the Hittities when there are dozens of other interesting ancient civs to choose from?

It has something to do with the time period. When they placed the manga, the Hittite Empire was the strongest, rivaled only by Egypt. It's also a civilization that has a whole lot of focus placed on it- by anything. I was only vaguely aware of it before I read Red River.
