Career change- Teacher to Officer

Postby agasfas » Mon Feb 07, 2011 9:28 pm

Hey guys, it has been a while but I would appreciate any prayers. I am having feelings of confusion and feel lost in terms of knowing what I want to do with my life - career wise.

Currently I am a Special Ed teacher at a middle school. I really enjoy teaching these kids but in my heart I do not feel that this is the profession for me. In addition, many districts are having budget cuts; 450+ teaching jobs will be cut in our district alone. Anyways, with that in mind I decided to apply to be a Texas State Trooper. Perhaps a bit random, but I enjoy the idea of doing something new everyday and helping people. I turned in my application and received a call back for testing. My physical and written test will be tomorrow on Tues. Feb 8.

I would like to ask for prayers that the Lord will help guide me to the profession that is right for me, whether it's being a Trooper or something else.

Thank you guys.

Hey, man - good luck! I hope you are successful in your efforts, and I pray that it'll turn out well.
When I saw "officer," I at first thought you were thinking of joining the military as an officer XD

I'll pray for you!

I know a lot of what you're going through. Well, first of all, I ALSO live in Austin. I work for the state, and my agency's workforce may be cut 60%...or if the governor has his way, it won't exist AT ALL.

I also used to be a teacher. It's difficult to remain in that position if you don't feel called to teach. Teaching is one of the hardest (and most rewarding) jobs there is. And with these huge cuts (though I hope special ed doesn't get hit so badly) in the area (I have friends in RRISD and Eanes who may also lose their theacing jobs, and a sister-in-law who can't FIND one a year out of college), it makes sense to move now.

Keep us up to date!

I know how it feels, it's a lot of pressure, with not much "reward." My mom's been a teacher for the past decade or so, and a lot of things have changed in the system. It all sounds like a pain the butt.

Yeah, teaching doesn't really seem like the place to be right now, sadly. I hope everything works out for you.

I'll be praying for you, good luck!

Thank you everyone for your prayers, I really appreciate it. Yesterday went very well. I passed both the physical and paper tests so the recruiters told me they would be calling in about 10 days to set up a date to have a polygraph test administered. If all goes well I then would be reviewed by a psychiatrist then attend a board interview. It seems like a lengthy process, but I am definitely excited.

Once again, thank you everyone for all your prayers and support. I will continue to keep all of you updated on the process.
