New, and here's my intro!

Postby Mouse2010 » Fri Jan 14, 2011 5:57 pm

I expect I'll just be a lurker here much of the time, but I wanted to introduce myself anway. I'm pretty new to anime. I started watching last summer and for now, at least, am hooked. I don't think there's a specific genre that I like; instead, I tend to have a better sense of what elements in a series really matter to me, such as character development, plotting/storyline, and humor.

I also have to say that I feel really old here, compared to most of the members! I didn't discover anime much later in life than most people.

So far, my favorite is Gun X Sword. It's one of the first ones I watched, and it's the series that made me really want to watch more. That's kind of funny, because it's not that popular of an anime, and the only reason I started watching it was that it was available for instant streaming on Netflix for awhile last summer. If not for that, I probably never would have heard of it.

Welcome to the site, dear. I hope you find your time here pleasurable and well spent. if you're trying to get into some more anime, Hulu is a great place to start. They host several short but well-written anime.

Mostly I'm a reader: fantasy, mystery, and sometimes historical fiction. (I have a not-so-secret love of Georgette Heyer's work). Some of my favorite books are those that combine the above genres, such as historical fantasy or historical mystery.

In high school and college I did a lot of creative writing because I wanted to be a novelist. I still dabble in that today, but for the last few years, most of my projects have gotten abandoned about 1/4 of the way through. I'm okay with that, as I figure it's better for me to keep writing even if I never complete anything than to give it up entirely.

Other than that, I work, care for my pets, spend time with my husband, try out new slow cooker recipes, and waste unconsionable amounts of time on the internet.

Cool. Lately I've been into fantasy, myself. What are some of your favorites? (It doesn't matter which genre they're in. ^^)

Out of curiousity, what kinds of things keep you from completing a work? (And I agree that writing stuff that you don't finish is better than not writing at all. XD)

Well, just randomly listing some books I like, I'd say that Georgette Heyer's Frederica (regency) and The Reluctant Widow (regency mystsery) and Cotillion (regency satire) are some of my favorite historicals. (For the record, these are not the bodice-ripping sex-laden historical romances you sometimes see on supermarket shelves]Mairelon The Magician [/I]and the series Wrede co-authored with Stevermer, especially Sorcery and Cecilia. I really like Patricia Brigg's Mercedes Thompson urban fantasy series (the protagonist, Mercy, is a Christian, although she doesn't always live like it). For mysteries, my favorite author is Laurie R. King, although I much prefer her Mary Russell books (which include an older Sherlock Holmes as a major character) to the series set in modern-day San Francisco.

A common thread between these books is that all of them focus on strong female protagonists.

I used to write mostly during the summer. I'd be terminally bored in the summer, so I'd just sit down and write a "novel" to keep my brain from rusting. I do have work to do over the summer now that I'm not a student, so I don't have the same amount of free time on hand, and I have other things that drain my free time. I think what happens is that I get really excited about a new idea, but once I get past the initial interest, it is too easy to walk away and do something else instead of spending the time writing past the rough spots in the story. So the moral of the story is that you should be self-disciplined about setting aside time to write, and then you can avoid my fate!

yeah, agreed (I start saying it's approaching old if they're double my age (so somewhere around 32 to me is approaching old [I don't know what to do when I'm older, that won't work...])

TriGun I've seen, but I hadn't really heard anything about Samurai X. I might have to take a look at it, since it's on Hulu.

I used to make outlines in the past, but what I always preferred was just sitting down in front of a computer screen and making up most of the plot as I went along, with just a vague sense of where the story was going to go in the end. It's definitely not the best way to write when one's time is limited, I know . . . .
