Hello all. I'm a twenty-two year-old Englishman. I like anime (I guess that should be obvious from the fact that I'm here!), and I also enjoy reading and gaming. I used to enjoy reading so much that I did a degree in it, which unfortunately dampened my enthusiasm for books. Currently I have a job helping to develop teaching materials for medical students.

I'm a Christian, sort-of: my faith is firmly rooted in the traditions of my class and nationality, or in other words it's bumbling, doubtful and extremely reserved.

Generally I like robots and spaceships in my anime -- naming favourites is difficult, but if I had to make a list then Turn-A Gundam, Patlabor, Legend of Galactic Heroes and Fang of the Sun Dougram would feature prominently. But I've been known to enjoy other things too (Princess Tutu would probably be another favourite).

Yes, several times, though the last time was a few years ago. I've also read the Silmarillion and, more recently, Finn & Hengest (because knowledge of decades-old debates over one-word ambiguities in Anglo-Saxon fragments is, um, good for impressing people at parties!).

Welcome to CAA, hope you like it here. Should you have any questions feel free to ask.
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Oohhh, you like robots, eh? Okay, you can stay.

I'm a huge Gundam fan, myself, but I haven't seen Turn A yet.

When I need a username for a website I open something with a lot of characters and pick a likely-sounding name -- yesterday the Morte d'Arthur was close to my desk, and Agloval/Aglovale is one of Arthur's knights.

armeckthefirst (post: 1450858) wrote:what kind of music do you like?

That's a tough question! I like to say that I have no taste in music, by which I mean that I enjoy listening to most things, but don't have anything which I'm a really dedicated fan of. If I take the music I listened to at work today as a fairly random sample of things I like I get the following list: The Jam, Alpha and Omega, JAM Project, Dvorak, MIO, Bob Dylan, Roxy Music, Blondie and Muse.

I suspect I'm simply attracted to catchy tunes and don't really have the ear and musical sense needed to really form an attachment to one genre.

It's always nice to meet another Gundam fan!

Turn-A has some of Tomino's usual problems, and Syd Mead's mechanical designs take some getting used to (though they're not the only mecha in the show). But I feel it does a pretty decent job of addressing some of the franchise's weaknesses (weaknesses like 'If war is so bad, why are you making these robots so cool?'). And it can act as a kind of capstone -- however much more Gundam they make, Turn-A will still function as a satisfying conclusion to the whole thing for me. Plus it has a neat premise and a pretty endearing cast.

But I suspect I, like most Gundam fans, tend to give my favourite parts of the franchise an easy ride, so don't mistake me for an impartial critic!

Yo! And welcome to the boards!

I went to England for fall semester last year- it was one of the best things I've ever done! I love England so much!

And I have to ask- how on earth did you get a cool job like developing teaching materials for med students?!

Heh, while I love my country I always imagine it makes a wet and unfriendly impression on anyone who visits, so it's lovely to hear you enjoyed your time here!

My job rather constructed itself: I started just testing and proofreading medical e-learning courses for short-term work after I graduated, and the team making the courses began to find other tasks which I could do. Consequently lots of my time is taken up with simple grunt-work freeing up the properly qualified artists and devs to do more of the skilled parts of their jobs. But I get to try to make text written by doctors clearer and meet students to try to find out what they think of our stuff, which can be quite fun.

It was a blessing that I found some work with people who are prepared to give minor employees a chance, basically. I suppose I'd say the lesson of my experience is not to underestimate the potential of small, short-term employment to lead to something firmer. Though I'm a bit young to be dispensing comments on job-hunting like I actually know much about it.

Occasionally, as a treat -- there's a chippy near my house where they do big portions, and I like to get a saveloy and chips. I can manage about half as a meal, and then use the rest in saveloy-chip-mayo sandwiches over the next couple of days . . . thinking about it, it's probably good for my health that this isn't a regular thing!
