Some things are more important

Well this is how last night went...I was at my friends 18th birthday party..,..there was alot of alcohol, but I managed to drink responsibly, until, I played spin the bottle with a few friends....when I was dared I was given the choice to either eat a tablespoon of salt or finish an almost full bottle of shooters....I ended up getrting drunk and today I had the worst hangover

So what I'm trying to say is that if you get put in a situation like that, Its better to say No and let people think less of you than having to either risk a health issue(thats if I ate the salt) or compromise your Christian values for the sake of a game

Oh, I would totally have eaten the salt

No, seriously, a tablespoon of salt is really not that unhealthy unless you have heart or salt issues in the first place. Otherwise, it's just gross. Drinking the almost full bottle of shooters is worse for your health all-around.

In any case, yes- if you feel that you're putting your values at risk, then say no.

Salt is in everything these days. It's more then likley you eat more then a teaspoon of salt everyday just in the food you eat. In least...that's how it is where I live in the US. Trying to find food with low soduim is a nightmare, especially concerning soup.
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

um... and you know, I'd rather have a gross feeling of salt in my mouth than risk my carreer. Getting caught drinking underage usually means either severe punishment or other-than-honorable discharge from the Navy.
I'm not gonna touch the stuff; too risky.

(as a little kid, though, I used to eat butter by the spoonful.... can't imagine salt being much worse XD

Doing more than a teaspoon (such as a tablespoon) of salt is not unhealthy unless you do it constantly. Once in a while isn't gong to hurt you- unless you have heart or blood pressure issues in the first place.

At least you accept that it was wrong. I've learned that when I "mess up" in my ways, I need to take some time to confess and repent and think about what I've done, why I did it, why it was wrong, and what I can do in the face of the temptation in the "next time." They say the hardest part is forgiving yourself - in a sense that is very true. But I think we're given a second chance so we can learn from our mistakes. If alcohol is a serious stumbling block for you, then maybe you should back out from any situations that would present the ability to drink (like parties) for the time being. I know for myself, it often means taking breaks from certain things while I am in a "weakened" state, until I understand that I am back on track with God, daily living and working with Him. That time often comes at his discretion, though. It's called learning to have a lot of patience. :)

I dont think I should stay away from aprties, but I should rather not let people put me in a situation where I drink more than I have planned, which I can still be sober from

I went out for dinner/drinks with some co-workers once, and my friend ended up having a few more drinks than was good for her. When we left, she and a couple others went straight to a dingy, seedy little bar down the street and drank some more. She called me from there a little later. She sounded pretty darn trashed. Kept urging me to come back out. When I staunchly refused, she called me a "fuddy-duddy". I told her about that a couple days later and she went bright red. She also said she'd had a nasty hangover the next morning and couldn't concentrate on her work, and that the dingy little bar is a complet rat-hole.
It's nearly an hour from there to her house, thank God she didn't get in an accident or get pulled over.
She's a lot more responsible now.

Yep, overconsumption of alcohol pretty much carries its own punishment.
And considering what she was drinking, it all starts with crappy, major-corporation beer.

The lesson? Support your local microbreweries, but support them responsibly.

at least you learned from the experience ^_^ there is something to be said for avoiding the source of the temptation. it takes a lot of strength to say no. and i have to say, good for you for being able to admit that it was a mistake. that's a really hard thing to do.

Um, to everyone saying the salt would have been better.

No. No it wouldn't. The reason alcohol gives you a hangover is that despite the fact that it's a liquid, alcohol dehydrates you. The hangover is the result of dehydration. This is why if you wish to avoid hangovers, the best thing you can do is to drink lots of water before and after drinking alcohol, and don't drink on an empty stomach.

Salt also dehydrates you. While I'm sure the level of dehydration wouldn't be exactly the same between the bottle of alcohol and the tablespoon of salt, in the end both of them would have dehydrated him so neither was really a better choice.

I'm not going to judge you, Fermy, but I would've taken the salt. I'm not the most confident person but I managed to not give into peer pressure at parties. You can too. I could legally drink and I do drink in moderation but I just took a large Coke or something to substitute. I still had a good time and some people even questioned me as to why I didn't drink and respected me for the decision. If I can do it, you surely can. Next time, try to be more careful and talk to God about the situation. It's good you've learned from such an experience.

I lol'd.

Also, being of the legal age, between the time I finished Bible college (where I pledged not to drink) and the time I became a missionary (wherein I also pledged not to drink), I tried several different types of alcoholic beverages, and found the majority of them to be not to my liking. I just don't like the flavor of alcohol unless it's masked under gallons of fruit flavoring and sugar. At that point, you might as well just drink soda.

See, this is what I mean when I say "arguing for the sake of arguing". Of course salt dehydrates. Duh. But a tablespoon of salt would not have had nearly as bad an effect as a nearly full bottle of an alcoholic beverage meant to be served in shots, on top of however much alcohol was already consumed.

(Adding this in separate post because my PS3's web browser likes to severely limit the character count in forum posts)

Whatever you have to say in response will, for the sake of my own sanity as well as in the interest of not derailing this thread, be ignored.

Dehydration + Other Impurities or additives, i.e. sugar. This is why drinking wine will give you a terrible hangover whereas you probably won't get one by drinking Vodka that was distilled seven times.

But more importantly fermy6: What was it you drank? =p

I'd just like to add that I'd never heard of shooters before, as referenced to alcohol. Only as an old-skool term for pistols. What exactly is it? Like a spirit?

I'm guessing it's their version of a shot glass. Shooters being drinks that you can take via shots. Vodka, cocktails, etc.

They're drinks with a very high alcohol content, such that they can only be safely/sensibly consumed in small glasses called "shot glasses", which are taken in one quick swallow . Never understood the point of doing shots myself, defeats the purpose of drinking, I think. Well, unless one's purpose is to get real shnockered real fast.

Some drinks taste better as shots. Sipping a Dr. Pepper shot is not the same as well, shooting one.

And Irish Car Bombs. Mmmm. :)
