The New War on Christmas

Talk about anything in here.

Atria took my post. Yeah, Thanksgiving pretty much didn't exist until Lincoln declared it a holiday, and even after that there was a lot of politics around which day it would be celebrated.

On the Store front, I think Shao Feng-Li's got her finger on the point of it all.

Musically speaking, it personally drives me crazy that the day after Halloween, Christmas songs are instantly played on the air waves. (Not that I'm much of a Halloween or Christmas fan.) But, it just seems a little "Orwellian" to me.

Like we're the characters in a movie that suddenly get hypnotized by listening to elevator music and start playing invisible instruments. If there really is a movie like that, do pm me the link to it! ;)

My store has put on the Christmas music. I'm about ready to go postal. A high voiced Michael Jackson singing "I saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" is physically painful to hear.

Kinda of topic:
But, it just seems a little "Orwellian" to me.

After reading his books, everything seems Orwellian to me XD

The Jackson 5's version of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" ("*beat* SANTA CLAUS IS COMIN' TO TOWN") fills me with a murderous hatred, doubly so because I don't celebrate Christmas and strenuously avoid anything to do with it. A friend of mine had to work in a store where he would hear it over and over and over again - that's gotta break some OSHA regulation, right? But "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" - I've never heard the actual song, but the title alone is more than enough to convince me that it's musical radioactive waste: a song that should be buried somewhere far away and then forgotten for the next hundred million years.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra, meanwhile... Their rock opera/whatevers they do with the lyrics in them make me die a little inside, but their instrumentals are nothing but awesome.

And as for Christmas moving further from December, it's a two-edged thing: on one hand, it's a mutant, all-consuming blob of commercialism that's slowly devouring the year, but hey, it's moving closer to what the actual date of Jesus' birth might have been. Every celebration of unbridled materialism has its silver lining, I guess?

I think people are missing the point that in "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" the point of the song is that the kid's father was dressed up as Santa, and was kissing his mom, and the kid was sneaking downstairs in the middle of the night (to see Santa).

I don't like the song, but I don't hate it either. Christmas Shoes will always and forever be the one song I cannot stand to hear though. I hate that song so much. I wish I could hate it to death.

I am also extremely irritated by "Simply Having a Wonderful Christmastime." It's just a really annoying song.

aklsdjgklag I agree SO MUCH about "Simply Having a Wonderful Christmastime." It's like it was written to annoy people. I first heard it a year or two ago while I was at work, and I just wanted to explode because it played like, SEVERAL times during the day. XD The fact that Paul McCartney has anything to do with that song just kills me inside. XD

That said, the movies Holiday Inn and White Christmas are the best things about the commercial side of the holiday. I am sometimes tempted to watch those movies even if it isn't Christmas. XD

My biggest issue with I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus (and Santa Baby as well) is that there seem to be about 10 or 15 versions of it, all really poorly done, and our store tends to play ALL of them in their music rotation. I seriously hear each of those songs somewhere between 5 and 7 times a day at work during christmas.

And Simply Having a Wonderful Christmastime needs to be taken out behind a dumpster and shot.

Oh I'm not saying it's not an irritating song. I was mostly talking to Davidizer I think who said the song needed to be destroyed simply because of its title, having never heard it. XD

And come on. I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus is infinitely more tolerable than "Santa Baby."

I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus, oh how cute, Santa is actually your dad, blah blah, whatever. I have a high-ish tolerance for schmaltz but that song makes me want to puke. Santa Baby is annoying but I can deal with hearing it once or twice a year.

I don't think I've ever heard 'Simply Having a Wonderful Christmastime'. Come to think of it, I don't remember 'I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus' either. XD

And... I like 'Santa baby'. I find it amusing.:red:
