Truly the future is a magnificent thing. I can only hope that this technology performs as they say it does, as it could potentially lead to less accident related deaths.

I heard it on our news - my favourite part is "Google have yet to decide how they will profit from this research". XD
I'd love to have one of the cars to test.
Although, I do love driving.... Fascinating technology nonetheless.

Probably. On the other hand, something like this is likely to be tied up for years in regulatory red tape, which wouldn't have existed (to that extent) in Henry Ford's day.

As in disable the automatic stuff? I doubt the software would go any more disabled than that. But then if you did that, you'd just have wasted a whole lot of money on a feature you don't use.

Well.. the leap from no car for the masses to an affordable car for the masses is a great advantage to the masses. A massive leap.
A leap from a person-driven car to an auto-driven car is... not a massive advantage to the masses. Great for lazy people, sending off your children to school by themselves, and um.. anything else? It seems the huge extra cost would not be worth it to most people, at least initially....

Well, I suppose I'm not well-read on Australia, but America has quite a few drunk drivers, something the many programs we see in school about how bad it is never seem to stop, but that, for instance, wouldn't be a problem with self-driving cars. Also, people who are bad drivers but aren't necessarily drunk also don't have to have driving problems. I don't see it solving the drunk driving problem as someone who's drunk enough to get into a car wreck probably also wouldn't have the presence of mind to engage the autopilot.

Maybe I'm being optimistic, as I've never been drunk, but if it was default on autopilot I wouldn't think they'd shut it off because they're drunk?
