This is what happens when you don't test your new packaging properly. Honestly, I love the biodegradable packaging, but they really need to work it out so that it is deafening.

I actually kind of liked how loud they were. I'm not sure why. I think it was mostly the novelty, and the fact that I love SunChips so much that I don't care if the whole world knows I'm eating them.

I've never heard of those chips, but the packets must be extremely loud to have to resort to such measures. It's rather hilarious, old bean.

I love the bags, because it annoyed any one that was around me, when I open them.

That didn't last long...

So, true fact: Those bags were NOT safe for digestion (probably). Very uncomfortable to eat. Yes.

Thing is, quiet chip / candy bags/wrappers have been the subject of research for a long time... Seems the quieter you make it, the harder it is to open or protect the contents within properly.

Those bags are great for when you want everyone in the immediate vicinity to know that you are eating chips. It's great for a chip-alarm at parties when you want to know who is eating more than their allotted portion. Mostly really freaking annoying. Good riddance.

There's already Facebook groups clamoring for Frito-Lay to keep the green bags.

If I cared about Facebook or thought internet petitions/groups did any sort of good, I'd join it.

I mean like I said, it's sad, but I understand. Their profits have dropped since they introduced the new bag, and as a business they have to do what they can to turn a profit. Doesn't mean I have to like it.

Times like these I wish CEOs could say "Y'know, even if our profits dropped 11%, we're still doing pretty good, I don't really need that ivory backscratcher, we'll do what we think is right and keep our integrity."

I liked the bags. They were fun! :D

And I love Sunchips a whole lot. They taste way better than those Baked Lays. <3

I can understand what you're saying, but I think I'd have a different opinion if I were a Frito-Lay employee who got laid off because the company's profits dropped 11% and they couldn't keep both me and their integrity.

Hearing a decrease in profits is what caused them to recall the bags makes sense, though. I'm still personally surprised people complained so much about them; I thought their being environmentally friendly would've trumped the extra noise they produced (though I'll admit, they were pretty loud).

A CEO who would lay off employees because of an 11% profit drop does not have integrity.

The CEO who said "Y'know, I'm okay with only making ten million dollars this year instead of 11 million dollars" is the one with integrity.

EDIT: It's not like Frito-Lay isn't a multi-million dollar company that makes products other than Sun Chips after all. And their profits OVERALL didn't drop 11%. Just sales of Sun Chips dropped 11%. When you're the company also making Doritos, Fritos, and Lay's potato chips, an 11% drop in sales of ONE product, to me, isn't worth getting rid of the bag. That's why I said I wish the CEO would have integrity instead of going "Oh no, I won't be able to buy that ivory backscratcher now!"

Oh thank heavens. Those things were ridiculous. No sneaky late night chip snacks while Mom and Dad are sleeping.

Don't worry Nate, they said they're still trying other eco-friendly packaging.

"We are on a journey with compostable packaging," says Gonzalez. Frito-Lay is showing its commitment by sticking with the noisy but compostable packaging for the sixth flavor, its top-selling Original, she says.

"We are applying what we have learned from this first generation to get to the next generation of environmentally friendly packaging," says Gonzalez.

Why don't they just use paper bags like Mission does? Last I checked, paper breaks down, burns down, recycles, and trees easily grow.

Couldn't they just keep using the current eco-bags until they come up with a better one? Also I'm sure there are other companies out there that use eco-bags; maybe they should try consulting some of them to see how it's done.

Frito-Lay is a bigger company than Mission...at least, I haven't heard of Mission. There may be reasons why a larger international company can't use paper bags that wouldn't apply to a smaller company...like, paper would be easy for bugs to eat/bite into, so you might not be able to ship paper-bagged chips as far or something.

Also the article now that I reread it says it's only getting rid of the packaging for five of the six kinds. What's the one kind that's going to keep the noisy packaging I wonder?

The paper Mission bags are actually lined with some kind of plastic so it's kind of a moot point.

Ah okay yeah, I figured it was probably wax paper or plastic/foil-lined or something, which would make it non-compostable or biodegradable. So it's basically as I was saying, pure paper just wouldn't work for chip bags.

I dunno. I'm sure they'll figure out something. With the Mission bags, the amount of plastic is minimal. Recycle what little plastic there is I guess? Mission is nationwide I think... Sugar and flour ship in paper- of course, they're as messy as all get out. I think a few other things do. I can't think of any off the top of my head now though. I think even the overly expensive gluten free organic natural crackers packed in brown bag cardboard have a plastic window in them.

I posted this morning but apparently it didn't go through. I have one of the new less noisy bags beside me now, the Peppercorn Ranch favor particularly. It says that there will be specially marked bags of the Original flavor if you want the compostable bags.

Anywho, I honestly dislike this a lot. I hope they bring them back. They really weren't that bad if you're considering things other than yourself. Now I can't go shaking the bag while in the grocery store and yelling "mom, guess what I haaave~!".

I kinda wish they would use the same packaging they put sugar and such in. Heck, if ginger snaps can do it, why not SunChips?

To your first point, I think that would depend on the size of the profit. I mean, if a company is making $300 million, an 11% drop in profits would be a loss of $33.3 million. I don't think they would take all of that out of the CEO's salary. I'm not saying that they should cut costs by laying off employees, but sometimes that's what companies do. I think if I were working for a company and they told me they had to let me go because profits were down and they weren't going to try and increase them, I'd be upset. (Granted, there could be other factors, like in this case. Also I could just be a bad employee. XD) Obviously, as you said, that doesn't really apply to this situation since it's just one brand of chips in a wide array of Frito-Lay brands, but you can't expect a company to be like, "Oh, our profits are down this year, better pull it from the CEO's salary."

To your second, I don't think that's always the case. I mean, if a CEO was always thinking, "Well, it's okay that we're not giving the consumer what they want and we're making less money, I can live with $10 million rather than $11 million," then consumers suffer because the company isn't trying to make better products to sell to them. Consumers don't buy the products the company is putting out, and then the company has less money, which leads to its employees getting reduced salaries/laid off. So I don't think a CEO who accepts decreased profits all the time is a good idea. Now, a CEO who accepts decreased profits for a good cause, like this one, sure. But if you want a company to grow and be successful economically, you can't have it run by people who are okay with making less money just because they're doing pretty well.

In the end, what Frito-Lay is doing is reacting to consumers. If consumers don't want a product, they stop buying it, and when consumers stop buying a product, companies stop making it. Obviously, not all consumers didn't want the bags, but enough stopped buying to make Frito-Lay recall the bags (though as has been said in this thread, one of the flavors still has the eco-friendly bags). I do hope that they continue to develop more eco-friendly bags, but I can't fault them for recalling them like they did.

Well, you know how loud a chip bag can be to open. Amplify that by about 1,000,000 times. All you have to do is walk round with a bag and it's like... white noise in a stadium at rock concert volume.

You've got it pretty good if a chip bag is all you have to complain about.
