Drum Solo! Who are the best drummers in rock?

Postby rocklobster » Wed Sep 08, 2010 3:38 pm

See topic. To me, the drummer is the backbone of the band. Without them, the guitarists, keyboardists, or any other musicians have no rhythm. So who are the best drummers?
Here are my picks
John Bonham--Led Zeppelin
Niel Peart--Rush (if you don't believe that the dude rocks, look up the song "Tom Sawyer" on youtube. Trust me, it is epic drumming!)
Rick Allen--Def Leppard (the dude has only one arm!)
Dave Grohl--Nirvana, Foofighters, Them Crooked Vultures
Keith Moon--The Who
Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz--Weird Al
Chad Smith--Red Hot Chili Peppers

I have no idea who the best drummers are in all of rock music, honestly. These are just some of my personal favorites out of the bands that I happen to listen to:

David Husvik – Extol. I think the main reason I take any interest in bands’ drummers is that my favorite bands has such an outstanding drummer that I could tell how good he is, despite not being particularly knowledgeable about drumming. His drum beats are creative and have great variety. For an example, listen to the way that the drum beat subtly changes throughout “Paralysisâ€

I don't really know that much about names of drum artists, but this video pretty much blew my mind:

Straylight, the first couple of minutes of that video I was like |: but then I was like O:

Are we only talking about rock and roll or can we talk about drummers from other genres too? Because we can't talk about the drums and not mention Buddy Rich. The guy was an absolute speed demon. Check it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_BmeBfV-O4&feature=related

I also like Gene Krupa. Much more relaxed style than Buddy Rich, but he's really fun to watch. I love watching people play who are obviously enjoying themselves: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHr4XQ9SEcg&feature=related

That's quite a kit... and uh... amazing... I don't know if anyone can top that.

Dan Jones of ex-punk band Seraphs Coal is a pretty great drummer, lead singer, and lyricist.

:o Okay, never mind. I have never seen/heard a more impressive drum solo.
You can find out things about the past that you never knew. And from what you've learned, you may see some things differently in the present. You're the one that changes. Not the past.

Best two Drummers in the world.
1) Neil Peart
2) Mike Portnoy.

Sadly, Portnoy can no longer claim DT... He's left the band within the last couple weeks. The man is amazing, and I wish him all the best. My favorite band in the world will be much less for the loss.

Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan (R.I.P FoREVer)- Former Avenged Sevenfold

Aaron Gillespie- Former Underoath

Matt Greiner-August Burns Red

Zac Farro-Paramore

I'm a guitar player so I don't know much about the drums, though I have wanted to play them. I go by what I like in "tone."
