Studio Spotlight: J.C. Staff

This week, a studio that has a fair number of important works and a large number of works that are fairly divisive.

Image

J.C. Staff was founded back in the late 80s, but they didn't start producing TV series until the mid-nineties, where it wasn't long until their first super-hit, Revolutionary Girl Utena. A few years later, they adapted the four-panel comic by Kiyohiko Azuma, Azumanga Daioh.

As they grew larger, they diversified their works into quite a few genres. Today, they are known for two groups of shows in particular. You can think of the two groups as being ends of a continuum, where a lot of the shows can fit into either group, but a lot of them are also sprinkled somewhere in between the two groups.

But first, let's go more in depth into Utena, which is a fairly important work. It came out in 1997 not long after Gainax's groundbreaking Neon Genesis Evangelion. And in many ways, Utena can be thought of the genre equivalent of Evangelion, subverting the shoujo genre in the same way Evangelion subverted mecha standards at the time as well as being incredibly cryptic and full of symbolism. But, Utena definitely beats Evangelion in the use of abstract symbols department.

Azumanga Daioh is a title that's recommended fairly often and is likely to be one of the first comedy series that someone new to anime is introduced to. It's pretty well-loved. Azumanga Daioh is generally assumed to be the genesis of the girls in high school doing stuff genre of manga and anime and a lot of people still measure newer works in that genre against Azumanga.

2005 was an important year for JC Staff, because it produced two shows that would sort of determine the types of shows it'd make for the next few years. The first of those is the first noitaminA show, Honey and Clover, which follows a group of students at an art college and their internal struggles. But this show sort of lead to a bunch of shows that attempted to portray serious relationships rather than your generic harem stuff. These are shows that include Nodame Cantabile, Kimikiss, or Aoi Hana.

Image

Their other 2005 show that got a lot of notice was Shakugan no Shana, whose titular character was kind of the prototype of for what would become the J.C. Staff textbook tsundere. The shows here include Zero no Tsukaima, Hayate the Combat Butler!!, and Toradora, which all feature a short tsundere girl voiced by Kugimiya Rie and contains your standard tsundere/shounen romance tropes.

It's worth stressing that these aren't the only two types of shows they make, but that when people think of JC Staff, they go to one of the Honey and Clover or Shakugan no Shana type shows. Stuff like Ookami-san and Index/Railgun would fall closer to the Shana type shows, while there are other shows like Kaichou wa Maid-sama, Taishou Yakyuu Musume, or Shigofumi who don't really fall neatly into one of those two piles.

They're definitely no Madhouse either. While they may go stuff outside their usual genres occasionally, their art remains largely the same and incredibly safe (as opposed to Madhouse who goes all out). Their most interesting art is usually with Kasai Kenichi's shows that often feature a beautiful watercolour style as opposed to the standard anime-looking stuff that JC Staff does the rest of the time.

Welp, I've seen eight episodes of the first Honey and Clover, and the first episode of Azumanga Daioh. Neither are amazing from what I've seen, but both are good.

I liked Azumanga Daioh. Just a word of warning, Revolutionary girl Utena will get you banned if you talk about it.

AzuDi was okay. I liked the beginning (got lots of LOLs from me!), and the end made me cry- the middle dragged on for me a bit, though! XD

I personally disliked Shakuga no Shana- too many plot holes/tsundereness from me, but the art/animation was well done.

And Honey-and-Clover is on my PTW list- it looks fantastic!

Guys, Honey and Clover is so good. It took me a while to get through because I found the beginning pretty slow, but it got really good as it went on. It's kind of the opposite of Nodame Cantabile for me, which started off really good but kind of middled out as it went along.

Shakugan no Shana actually had an interesting premise, even if it was filled to the brim with nonsense made up terminology, but I'm basically in it to finish it at this point. A lot of my problems with it stem from J.C. Staff's poor original content that took up most of the second season because there are some interesting developments that take place in the light novel. I mean, it's no Zero no Tsukaima, which also had a pretty interesting premise, but almost immediately became terrible. I actually read a lot of Zero no Tsukaima but never ended up watching it because it was so dumb.

I really like a lot of the stuff that J.C. Staff puts out, but they are far from my favorite studio. Azumanga Daioh and Best Student Council are pretty good, and I enjoy stuff like UFO Baby and A Little Snow Fairy Sugar. Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto (Someday’s Dreamers) was enjoyable enough--it had pretty animation and great music. But the rest of it kind of annoyed me. I guess that description sums up how I feel about most J.C. Staff productions. Nice enough production values...but not really my cup of tea (Shakugan no Shana, Nabari no Ou, Ghost Hunt...I’m looking at you!).

A few J.C. Staff works I have really enjoyed though, are Asatte no Houkou (Living for the Day After Tomorrow) and Taishou Baseball Girls (which was just licensed in North America--yay!!). Also, Honey and Clover is amazing. I'm not even close to finishing it yet, but it is already pretty much my new favorite. If you haven’t watched it already, you should go do so now!

Oh it will not. It's a "Do Not Discuss" title not a "Say this and you get banned" title.

Anyway Utena was the first show that made me realize the kinds of tricks companies will play to make people buy a series. I still remember years ago, seeing the Utena DVD in a store with the words "From the director of 'Sailor Moon!'" on the cover. Me, being young and impressionable, thought "Hey I love Sailor Moon, this will be awesome!"

Sadly, after two episodes I gave up on the show. I just found it horribly boring. The characters and plot weren't interesting to me, and it was that day that I realized "director" is not the same as "creator." Not that that would make a difference either...I love Ranma 1/2, but Rumiko Takahashi also did Inuyasha, which I hate.

Either way, it made me wary of such hype phrases.

The animation was nice though.

And these guys also did Snow Fairy Sugar? I loved that series. Not groundbreaking or "TOTALLY AWESOME" but it was a lot of fun. I'll also keep my opinions on Azumanga Daioh to myself I suppose since I seem to be the only person in the entire world who hates it.

Oh, yeah! UFO Baby and Someday's Dreamers! I totally forgot about those! I love those.... Well, I love UFO Baby. I've only read Someday's Dreamers, and I adore that one as a manga. But I'd totally watch the anime any day. But UFO Baby is fun and adorable and needs more love.

Not much for me to say here, Azumanga is the only thing I've watched from start to finish of theirs that I'm aware of.

I really want to see Utena. Kinda want to see Honey and Clover too, but their other works don't particularly interest me.

They also did R.O.D the TV (The TV series only, the OVA was done by Studio Deen).

A lot of my problems with it stem from J.C. Staff's poor original content that took up most of the second season because there are some interesting developments that take place in the light novel.

It's interesting to note that the light novel adaptations they have started since Shana and ZnT have generally been really faithful to my knowledge(ex:Index, Toradora!), so it appears they learned their lesson. I've always liked Shana the best when it focused on the battles between the Flame Hazes, Crimson Lords, and Crimson Denizens. The love triangle the series sometimes gives undue focus towards is actually kind of generic and not all that interesting by itself.

And since I mentioned it, everyone should give Toradora! a shot. I mean I've seen people who never like romantic comedies and they actually like Toradora! Heck, I don't really go for straight romantic comedies very often myself.

Oh right, Toradora! And R.O.D the TV? Interesting.

Ah, the Revolutionary Girl Utena anime bring back memories. The animation was great, but everything else was rather blah (except character and outfit designs were good).

While I prefer the manga to the anime for Azumanga Daioh, I will admit, JC Staff did a great job at adapting it to animation.

Didn't JC Staff also do Spiral? Or am I thinking of something else...? I loved the animation is Spiral. Despite the let down ending, the animation would make me watch the series again. XD;

And, I've been meaning to check out the anime of Honey and Clover. I enjoy the manga a lot.

Oh, I've thought about watching Toradora!. Monies are the main issue I have though, though I'd like to support NIS since they're new and I want to watch it anyways.

Also, I don't know if you take requests or not, but after the Gainax thread, could you do Brains Base if you do take requests?

I am saddened by the fact that no one mentioned that J.C. Staff also animated Excel Saga in 1999.

Excel Saga is one of those anime that when you watch it you aren't sure whether to laugh or check yourself into an insane asylum.

When I watched it I wasn't sure whether to turn it off and try and get a refund or go back in time and stop myself from wasting money and time on the first DVD.

Puchu.

I actually liked it quite a lot. Especially the episode that parodied dating sims.

I thought it was one of the worst shows I'd ever seen because I didn't find any part of it even remotely funny. It's extremely annoying when a show is trying its hardest to be funny and failing miserably at it. OH LOOK THIS GIRL IS ALWAYS SICK AND COUGHING AND SHE DIES A LOT and that's funny because...? OH LOOK THIS GUY NAMED PEDRO ALWAYS HAS HORRIBLE STUFF HAPPEN TO HIM AND HE ALWAYS FEELS TERRIBLE AND REALLY MISSES HIS WIFE AND CHILD and this is funny because...?

I mean I really don't get it. How is that funny? I don't laugh at other people's misfortune, not usually anyway, and the "This girl are sick" thing was so overdone and forced that I really wonder who could laugh at it. It's about as funny as a sign that says "This sign is funny, laugh at it."

But again opinions etc.

Yeah Nate. I am with you. I hate it but for different reasons I think. Their is a fine line between good and bad slapstick comedy. Excel Saga fell on the bad side for me.

It machine gunned jokes one after another without regard to if they were even funny. Also, I am really not a fan of super deformed wild takes in anime, and this was chock full of it.
