Summer Wars on blue Ray: You, Too, Can Watch

Sumemr Wars Blue Ray. Pay special attention to both the subtitle tracks and the Region Code for this disc...and then dance. It comes out on Sept. 10 but is available to pre-order now.

Sure, this is a Taiwanese edition, so you won't get an English dub; however, we haven't heard word one about a North American license, so this release might be the only way to legally buy the movie. Even if an R1 edition does get released...this way you don't have to wait.

I'd rather just buy a LE Japanese Blu-ray and download the fansubs. Are you really sure you want to subject yourself to English subtitles on a Taiwanese release? That sounds like a fantastically bad idea.

It's not like it's a fansub. This is an official release; surely there are multilingual folks who they pay to translate Japanese. Or are you referring to some other way subs can affect a Taiwanese BD?

If you honestly cannot wait, I'd recommend going for a Japanese Limited Edition Blu-ray and just download the fansub, as I have already suggested. It's better value anyway since you get cool stuff.

Of course, I say this as someone who has grown up watching hilarious Engrish subtitles to supplement my lacking Cantonese skills when watching movies from HK, so this has obviously left me highly suspicious of "English" subtitles originating from that part of the world.

I've seen my share of HK bootlegs before (Kenshin and FMA eps) but never an officially licensed release. I am willing to be told by someone who has seen an official disc that the English subs are awful, though. I just assumed that we could expect a higher degree of quality since this is something that the Japanese companies are putting out there.

Like I said, it's largely my own prejudice and lack of faith in my peoples' ability to translate things into English properly. You could be right and it could be fine, but based on past experience, I'm definitely not putting over $50 into finding out whether 2010 is the year when Chinese people started noticing that their English subs are grammatically incorrect and I would never suggest to people to do the same.

Well the Taiwan edition might have good English subtitles since Summer Wars is a Warner Brothers film.

I think I'll hold off on buying anything right now. An english version will be available in the U.K. in September so I imagine a North American release isn't too far off.

ALL TV'S support Bluray. The only things you have to worry about are Bluray menus being unreadable due to the text being too small (even though many HDTVs are small, making this a problem even on those) and they ignore safe frames (even though nearly every HDTV has overscan just like the SDTVs do, if not as much)

Oh, and maybe you need to worry about a bit of flicker, mostly when text is on screen, but occasionally at moments like when you're looking at a small pattern with a lot of contrast (a screen door or checkered surface in the distance) but that didn't stop me from enjoying bluray on my SDTV (only just got an HD For myself since coming to Korea... and I once again won't have one when I get back to the US.)

Bluray players are cheap now, and Bluray movies are approaching DVD costs (if you can't find a new Bluray for 20 or less, you're probably not looking hard enough) It would be rather wise to pick up new movies on bluray even without an HD-TV, because you'll eventually have one, and therefore have a catalogue to watch on it, and because the menus tend to be better. Of course, there are Bluray movies that are even worse than DVDs in quality... There's a list, if I can find it. Best to stick to demo to silver quality. Only get Bronze / Copper if the extras are really nice, and only get coal on DVD. Resolution means little if there's copious artifacting and too much film grain (which is another reason I'm not fond of digital distribution of HD movies)

You know, since there aren't any Japanese voice actors that I care about in this movie, if it screens in Canada (HA HA FAT CHANCE), I might go see it in theatres.
