Anime that you watch that you're pretty sure no one else here watches

The real heart of CAA; discuss specific series, issues, and things related to anime here.

Postby blkmage » Thu Jul 22, 2010 1:53 pm

We started off alright, but I think it's time for a reminder of what this thread is all about.

  1. Please try a little harder to mention shows that you think no one has seen. A few minutes around the anime forums is enough to realize that shows like Darker than BLACK and Haibane Renmei are brought up regularly. A simple search is enough to make sure that it's never been mentioned before!
  2. Please try a little harder to sell or warn the show you are talking about. It's great that you're the only one here that's watched Musashi Gundoh or Tayutama! Now tell us how good or bad it was. What's it about? Who are the people behind it?
  3. And remember that you can talk about shows you hated or didn't like! You don't have to like everything you've watched. I certainly don't. Talk about shows that you think people should avoid. You might save someone! Alternatively, you might get someone who disagrees with you and we can talk about it!

So I guess I mentioned a show in the opening post that I hadn't brought up again, and that is H2O ~Footprints in the Sand~ which is an awful, awful show. It's basically a harem show, except the main character is blind. Some crazy and dumb stuff happens to the heroines that the main character has to solve and at the end we get some hilarious Evangelion-imitation ending. The best part of the show was the Engrish trailer that aired before it.

And along with that is Myself;Yourself in which the premise is that the main character moves back to his hometown after several years of being away. Also, tragic things happened to him and his friends! Also, he has problems he has to solve! Worst part of the show is Chiyo's voice actress, who should never be allowed to do any other role again.

Basically, both of the above shows are dumb and I feel bad for watching them.

I've watched the first Switch OVA due to a friend telling me Switch is great and if I don't read the manga I should at least watch this.

Maybe it's just because it expects you to know what's going on in the middle of it, but I really didn't like it. Don't watch it anyone, unless you've read the manga, then I wouldn't know.

I've seen a few people mention it, but Nadia: Secret of the Blue Water is probably sort of obscure enough for me to throw out there. An early 90s adventure/steampunk ("inspired" by 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea) series by Hideaki Anno before he became best known for Evangelion. It's overall a solid title, and worth a look for anyone who likes the genre.

Also, a few years ago, I was devouring all of the unlicensed Gundam and Macross series. I watched through all of Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ, Mobile Suit Victory Gundam, After War Gundam X, Turn A Gundam, Macross 7, and Macross Zero. Gundam X and Turn A Gundam in particular are both good series, and are my favorites of that list.

Macross 7 is...er...well, I liked SDF Macross and Macross Frontier quite a bit better...I'll put it like that. M7 would probably have been greatly improved if it was half as long as it was.

I enjoy watching OVAs and ONAs, so here are a few that I’ve never seen mentioned here (thankfully, in the case of some :p).

Amuri in Star Ocean. I decided to give this series of three OVAs a chance, and regret that I ever wasted an hour and a half of my life on something so awful. The premise sounded interesting enough--in the future, humans with special abilities (called “Adaptersâ€

I've seen Only Yesterday, which is a Miyazaki anime that Disney will never, ever release in the states because of a little scene where girls learn about their periods. :shake: Really, Disney needs to stop this "we only make kid-friendly movies and tv" lie. They own Touchstone and Miramax, both of which have released R-rated movies. They aren't fooling anyone.

The Only Yesterday debacle is so fickle. Girls should be learning about that stuff at an early age. Australia seems to have no issues with it. They released the movie here several years back - with a PG for 'mild themes'. I don't think it warranted anything higher.

The only anime I can think of is Texhnolyze. I'm sure someone has seen it here but it's not that well-known. Very adult but interesting and very well-done.

^Agreed with W4J about that- "Womanhood" came to me super early, and it would have been nice to have a movie like that to help me understand it a bit better, bcs I got flack from my classmates about it, too.

El Cazador de la Bruja- the last in the trilogy of 'Girls with Guns' in the line of Noir and Gunslinger Girls. I thought it was pretty good- a sotry about two girls travelling across Mexico to find out why one had strange powers. It really is about the journey and not the destination, though, because while the expanation was interesting, the ending was a little.... odd. And then you had a seemingly shoujo-ai ending, which would also put some people off.

Texhnolyze is actually one I've been itching to watch because it's by the same team that made Haibane Renmei and Serial Experiments Lain.

Oh hey, here's another show that I mentioned in the opening post that I hadn't expanded upon yet.

Gakuen Utopia Manabi Straight is one of my favourite slice of life shows. It's unlike Aria or Hidamari Sketch in that there's a plot and there's an objective to be met by the end of the show, and not in the vague K-ON! sort of way either. Stuff happens, characters grow, and by the end of it all, there's a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction that I compared to the end of Gurren Lagann. It's also the last TV series that ufotable produced before going on to shock the world by producing a TYPE-MOON adaptation that isn't awful (Kara no Kyoukai).

Got'cha. I watched the eps when it first came out but I dropped because my internet decided to not work for a week or two. I thoroughly enjoyed it though, I think I stopped about.. 17-18 maybe? I do need to pick that up again.

Does anyone here watch Fairy Musketeers? It's pretty cute, but it's a rather run-of-the-mill magical girl story.

Manabi Straight is less "boring" than Aria, if you want a thing to compare its boringness to.

They could just cut out that scene but I suppose Miyazaki wouldn't like that at all.

It is really stupid when you consider all the other themes they put into Disney movies.

Okay, so somehow this thread has gone five pages without me posting in it. Or rather, I've posted in it, yes, but, you know, posted in it. Fixing.

Casshern Sins

Other people watch this, actually, but I'm pretty sure most of them do so primarily because I told them about it, so here it is. CAHSHARN. Quite possibly the most beautiful Anime about the end of the world ever made (not to be confused with Yokohama Kaidashi Kikō the most calming Anime about the end of the world ever made). The Ruin has come to the civilization of robots, slowly consuming everything and everyone in rust and decay, save for rumors of a single unaffected individual, the titular Casshern who only occasionally sins. It keeps things reasonably thoughtful without ever descending into action heroes standing around quoting from philosophy paperbacks, and has one of the most satisfying conclusions to an Anime I have ever seen.

Giant Robo

I will post this as many times as it takes. As many times. And I absolutely will not stop.

Kaiba

Blkmage mentioned Kaiba briefly in passing in his opening post, bringing the grand total of people here who watched it to three, which is simply unacceptable. Essentially, Kaiba is dystopian literature coated in a children's book sensibility, which is just about all I can say about it without spoiling or ruining its story, which is best experienced blind in my opinion. There is similarly no excuse for this not being licensed. Go watch Kaiba.

Mahjong Legend Akagi / Ultimate Survivor Kaiji

Nobody nobody nobody else here watches or cares about Fukumoto. I think maybe John Jinn did but he hasn't posted in two years so forget him. Like JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, this is my other trumpeted cause, so it's possible CAA actual thinks it's more exposed than it is, but nope - it's just me. Gambling with death! The yakuza! Those noses! High stakes rock-paper-scissors! Dudes getting cooked alive! Those noses again. Manly tears! Because the slave has nothing to lose, he alone can kill the emperor!

Seriously though, this more than anything else fits in this thread.

Oh! Edo Rocket

Fish recommends a light-hearted feel good comedy? Yes. Yes he does. A young fireworks maker in Feudal Japan labors under a government ban on luxuries and entertainment to help a stranded girl return to the moon. If that wasn't out of left field enough, it's apparently based on honest to God stage play. Funimation picked it up forever ago and has since proceeded to sit on the license and do nothing with it.

Birdy the Mighty: Decode

This one's picking up lately thanks to podcast coverage, but its audience is still in relative infancy. A space police officer tails a small criminal operation to Earth, where she accidentally kills a young man in her pursuit. Human bodies are fortunately easily repairable (if time consuming), so to compensate they have to share lives until he can be restored. Every character is lovable (except that one guy). Every episode ends on a cliffhanger. The animation is fluid and crisp and the music is fantastic. My only real complaint is that it's only two seasons when it feels like it should have been three.

Cowboy Bebop

Oh wait, just kidding, everyone has watched this. Except Blkmage.

Blkmage.

Master Keaton

An adaption of several (several several) short stories by Naoki Urasawa following a true "Renaissance Man" who goes on adventures and is generally awesome despite my having no idea how someone in his position finds the time to do all this. It's slow at times, but delivers when it's supposed to. Nice to watch in short bursts, though good luck tracking it all down.

Akazukin Chacha

I think I can safely say no one saw this coming.

Akazukin Chacha is a magical girl comedy fantasy children's show about a young witch in training struggling to learn magic despite her gross incompetency, aided by her childhood friends - a friendly werewolf and a loudmouthed kid magician. Never saw much coverage outside of Japan due to a good portion of the show being Japanese language puns, but it still managed to be charming and clever and don't judge me.

Has anyone seen the Tower of Druaga anime? For an anime based on of the most obscure (and insanely hard) Namco games ever, it's great. And the bonus--you don't have to have played the game to understand what's going on, because it totally parodies the quest formula. Both seasons are available on Crunchy Roll and are worth watching if you want a good laugh.

Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo

I know exactly one CAAer that has watched this show and two who are still watching it. That is far, far too few.

Maybe a lot of the crowd here got into anime in the later part of the 2000s. This is the only reason I can think of that more people don't know about/haven't watched Mahiro Maeda's sci-fi take on the classic Dumas novel.

OK, maybe not the only reason...some people are scared away by the GONZO name. I'm not saying there isn't a case to be made for such a policy, but Maeda, who spent his formative years honing his talents @ Studio Ghibli (working on titles such as Porco Russo, Laputa and Nausicaa), happens to be one of the only guys (the only guy?) who knew what he was doing in that studio. After Gankutsuou, he got the heck out.

But about the work itself. Again, this is a drastic, sci-fi flavored reinterpretation of the French novel. Travel is interplanetary rather than from city to city. There are space ships. The Count, in addition to being awesome, is blue. The point is that anyone expecting a straight-up retelling will be disappointed.

Plot summary? To quote the CAA review: "The original Count of Monte Cristo novel is the story of an innocent man thrown into an Alcatraz- like prison. After many angry years, he manages to get free, get money, and orchestrates major revenge and evil against the people who got him into jail in the first place."

The first thing that will grab the viewer is the totally distinct visual style of the show. Objects and characters have textual overlays that give the show a gorgeous look that has not been reproduced in anime. Once the novelty wears off, the viewer will find that there is substance-a-plenty practically bursting out from underneath the show's shiny exterior. The plot that unfolds is dramatic on a level that, for me, is unparalleled in the medium (perhaps only rivaled by Monster). Gankutsuou is anime pringles. With a variety of flavors that you'll will love or love to hate in the characters that populate Maeda's world.

So, basically: I dare you to watch it.

...Unless you are totally unable to handle the content. There is nudity in a couple of episodes and one sex scene early in the series.

Here's one I'm sure no one on here knows about, because the only other fan I know of this show is no longer a member of CAA: Dual Parallel Trouble Adventure. It's a spoof of Neon Genesis Evangelion and basically replaces Shinji with a character who vaguely resembles Tenchi Masaki from Tenchi Muyo. (It's actually made by the same creative team behind the Tenchi Muyo franchise.) It's a very funny take on Evangelion and doesn't even bring religion into the story like Evangelion did. Unfortunately, it was licensed by Geneon, so unless FUNimation picks it up like it has other Geneon titles, I'm afraid it will unfortunately be lost forever:sniffle:

I am really enjoying Bartender so far. I haven't heard of anyone mention it on here, so I figured this thread would be a good place to bring it up. Its a good slice-of-life/drama anime and the end sequence always cracks me up because while it is tying in the themes from the show, it also has a sense of randomness to it. XD

Windy Tales- a slice of life that has a schoolgirl gaining the power to control the wind. Unfotunately, the whole middle of the series has almost nothing to do with that, so it can be a bit frustrating. But the art is very unique, and the animation is very different. And the beginning and the end of the series are very involving and well-done.

Rose of Versaille- one of the earliest shoujo anime, this is an anime that chrinicles the life of Oscar, a woman raised as a man who becomes the guard to the Queen, and Queen Antionette and the beginnings of the French Revolution. I have to say, it's pretty decent. If you can stand the older art and animation, this makes for a very good historical drama. While certain things have been altered, for the most part this is incredibly historically accurate.

Scrapped Princess- Another older anime (90's), this is about a princess that is foretold to be the destruction of her entire kingdom on her 16th birthday. So she and her siblings travel around the country, trying to hide her idedntity and protect her from those that would kill her. It's pretty good- I hate the princess as a character (far too whiney and helpless for my tastes), but overall this has some awesome action and great characters overall.
