Studio Ghibli merchandise is a good example of stuff that's actually very normal. You can get Studio Ghibli (usually Totoro) clocks, mirrors, hand towels, handkerchiefs, chopsticks, bento boxes, pillows, planners, etc. Oh, and let's not forget the dishes and cutlery, which unlike the Evangelion one above are actually shaped like ordinary, nice, plates and cups and mugs and silverware and whatnot.
If you're going to buy a towel or a planner anyways, I don't think it's particularly silly to get one that has a Studio Ghibli design on it. What is ridiculous, however, is how anything with the Studio Ghibli name on it is extremely overpriced.
Along similar lines, for the very low price of only 12,000 yen (over $120), you can have your very own materia pendant. I don't have a good picture for that, however, so you'll just have to take my word on it.
Then there are the cans of soda that Square-Enix always uses to promote any new Final Fantasy game or movie that is about to come out. They cost twice as much as a typical can of soda (200 yen) but for that price you get . . . a really spiffy can.
