Old video games that are great

Postby Sammy Boy » Wed Jun 02, 2010 2:27 am

Hi everyone,

What's are old video games that still give you good memories and make you want to play them after all these years?

For myself:
- X-COM: Enemy Unknown (aka UFO Defense)
- Flashback

There were others, but these two immediately come to mind. :)

Sonic 3 & Knuckles. I grew up on this way into the Gamecube age, so it's something that I really find myself wanting to play a lot.

Scorched Earth. My sister and I had hours of fun playing that game, coming up with all sorts of rules and variations. Sometimes we'd make the field completely level and then aim our cannons straight forward and blow the crap out of each other's tanks. Sometimes we'd each put our tank on the tip of a tall, narrow mountain and blow the ground out from under each other. This would cause our tanks to slide down the mountains and make contact in the center, where we'd commence to use the most destructive weapons we had at our disposal. Both tanks would blow up, but it was satisfying.

The Carnivores trilogy for the pc comes to mind although I guess they're not that old. They came out between 1998 ad 2001 and were pretty amazing for their time and genre. I still find time to play them. The only problem is keeping the game running because it doesn't work too well on newer computers, especially in D3D mode. Ice Age is my fave.

Wikipedia doesn't over much info on them at all, so here's a fansite that explains the games.

Recently, I've discovered Gunstar Heroes for the Genesis/Mega Drive. It's one of the most fun games I've played in a long time. Also, it has Seven Force, which can only be described as the best boss ever.

Heheh, you know what the first game that popped into my head was? Kid's Typing. It's an old game that I've never heard anyone talk about, but it's what taught me how to type, and since now I can type at least 60 words per minute, I have a lot to thank it for. Basically, it's a game where a ghost named Spooky teaches you how to type and monitors your fastest key, slowest key, record time, accuracy, etc. You go about this house haunting it, and in each room there's something that makes sound or moves according to how fast you're typing, so it's fun to try to go as fast as you can. There's also a secret library where you can type out fairy tales and such.
You can find out things about the past that you never knew. And from what you've learned, you may see some things differently in the present. You're the one that changes. Not the past.

All of my favorite games of all time are on the SNES, but aside from those only one pops into my mind:

Road Rash (for the 64)

I used to have so much fun multiplaying that with friends. Something about spoking them, Indiana Jones style, at 120 mph was extremely satisfying....

That and jumping oncoming vehicles.

Outlaws.
Dark Forces (the original).
System Shock.
Descent (original and II).
Star Trek 25th Anniversary (with the full voice cast).
Strife.
Wing Commander III, which was the best WC, and Privateer 2: The Darkening, which was the best WC spinoff.

You may want to check out Action Fist. I've read it plays like Gunstar Heroes (I've never played that, so can't verify) and best of all, Action Fist is a free PC game (search for "Action Fist").

Yes. This. TGL is one of the most unique games ever. This other game called Sigma Star Saga (GBA) tried to do the same concept (combining Zelda-type exploration with shmups), but...it wasn't pretty.

Also, Grubb, if you liked Gunstar Heroes, try out Alien Soldier; it's a Genesis/Mega Drive game by the same company, and it is just as awesome. It's made up of short stages broken up by completely insane bosses that get even less explicable as the game goes on. Think of it as the gaming equivalent of sucking the creamy filling out of a Twinkie with a straw: it cuts right to the chase, because everybody loves a good boss fight. It only got released in the US on the Sega Channel (an Internet service for the Sega), but Europe got it, and it's on the Wii's Virtual Console.

Also, Lemmings was probably the first game I played, with Mom on the ol' Windows 3.1 machine. It's still awesome.

Actually, I'm inclined to agree. And Commander Keen in: Goodbye, Galaxy was great.

Also, the original Duke Nukem side-scrollers. I played those to death.

There are some titles that are very obvious—FFIV-VI (also VII if you want to count that as “old”), Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana (Seiken Densetsu II), Legend of Zelda: ALTTP, etc. Rather than dwelling on those, I’m going to put in a requisite plug for my favorite series that not many people like: SaGa. I played the first three SaGa games on Game Boy growing up, back when I only knew them as the Final Fantasy Legend I-III, and I loved them, especially FFLII (SaGa 2). More recently, I have acquired the entire Romancing SaGa series (1-3) for Super Famicom; I haven’t played the first two yet, but Romancing SaGa 3 is now one of my all-time favorite RPGs, right up there with Chrono Trigger and FFVI. Very fun, but only available in English as a fan-translated ROM.

Square-Enix recently did a 3d remake of SaGa 2 for the Nintendo DS. Of course, whether it will ever be localized is a separate issue, given the series generally poor reception in the west.
