Let's Play: Sleuth

Let's Play: Sleuth

Postby goldenspines » Sun May 09, 2010 2:30 pm

So, I don't play games too much, but after seeing the Let's Play Oregon Trail threads, I was feeling somewhat nostalgic and decided to download my favorite old DOS game that I used to love as a child (it came on a Floppy disc, that's how old I am XD).

It is called "Sleuth".

Image

The game works basically like Clue (only a bit more dangerous and complicated, but we'll get to that later). You are a detective (the little yellow, square smiley face) and there has been a murder that you must solve before the murderer finds you first.

For the sake of explanation and because I need to review them myself, I will post the instructions for the game.

Image

Because the computer I used to play this on(as well as others back then) didn't use mice back then, the commands are all text commands (therefore, you must know how to spell in this game, guys. It's educational. :D)

Image

I would like to note now that finding the magnifying glass quickly relies on chance. So that makes thing a little bit more difficult. This page also gives very good advice and should be noted if I wish to stay alive.
I will be keeping track of everyone's alibi as well with a piece of paper (since the game only takes about 15 minutes) and will post my notes later when I post screenshots.

Image

It should be noted that near the end of the game, the murderer will start following you around and waiting for an opportunity to lock you in a room and kill you. And once you get the weapon, then your chances of survival are not too good. As a general note, I often hyperventilate near the end of the game. :3

Now, I hope you all have been reading this far, because this next part is the most IMPORTANT concerning all of you.

Image

I am going to be playing the personalized version of the game because it's more fun that way. :D Therefore, I need 7 volunteers to post in this thread so we can get this started.

*hopes some people will be up for this* XD;

If there isn't a rule against being in more than one 'Let's Play' thread, than sign me up as well.

I wish to volunteer as well. I love detective stories. I think I actually played Sleuth in school. I kept getting killed before I could even identify the murderer.

Oh wow, I didn't think I would get this many responses. XD Thank you all so much. <33

Well, I took the first seven people to respond to the thread for this game. BUT, if this game turns out to be interesting enough for you all to read about, I might play another one with different people as a suspects. :3

Okay, the guest list is as follows (please note the odd spelling to your names is NOT my fault. The game just wants both first name and last name and will freeze the game if I don't give both. So, I had to make a few adjustments. :\)

-MrHat Andclogs
-Ante Bellum (Your name worked out perfectly, yay XD)
-Tsuku Yomi
-Hohen Heim
-Capn Nick
-Fish Andchips
-Peanut John (I'm sorry, I couldn't think of a better last name. ;o; )

Okie dokie, the game's afoot!

Image

D: I'm sorry, Ante! Don't worry, I'll find your killer! (I hope >_>; )

Image

Just a bit of filler here to show you all the area a bit. The game keeps things a bit exciting by telling you how the house looks (since the game graphics are rather lacking).

Image
We shall start our search here, in the sewing room. (don't worry guys, I'm not going to do this for every room. I'm just setting the stage and trying to make this dramatic, or something. >_>; )

Image

What luck! The magnifying glass in the first room! *beams with happiness* 8D
The first order of business is to get it, then question the sleeping man (Nick) in the chair. (yes, I'm that rude; I'm going to wake him up)

Image

After having the magnifying glass safe in my grasp, I question Nick who (thankfully) answers me kindly. Although, what was he doing in the kitchen all evening? o.O

Anyway, moving on.

Image

Back out in the hall, you can stop to admire the walls and stuff. It's kind of nice to do this now since further in the game, you may be pressed for time (aka: the murderer will be stalking you).

Image

Next room is the parlor. But before I question Peanut who is lounging in the middle of the room (is everyone in this house tired or something?), since I have the magnifying glass, I will start examining objects in my search for the murder weapon. Let's start with the teapot.

Image

.....
I see we are getting nowhere pretty fast. But don't worry, hopefully things will pick up soon next post. XD;

Er, no, not really. *can't recall if she mentioned that anywhere* Out of the list of people I put into the game (the 7 of you guys), the game randomly chooses one to be the victim. After the murder (which is at the beginning of the game), only I have the chance to die if things go wrong. :\
But, one of the remaining people is the murderer. I just have to find out who. >_>; So basically all you guys do now is either help or hinder me in my investigation.

Sorry, I hope that clears things up. >.<;

Awww, you can talk, Ante. It's okay. 8( You can be a ghost or something. >_>

Since I did leave us off at a boring place last time, I'll give you something more to entertain yourselves with before the night is over.

After finding the teapot tealess, I questioned Peanut.

Image
Having a sewing party, were we? XD Poor Ante, she doesn't have very many friends yet, except me (who is trying to find her killer).

I continue my search through the rooms.

Image
Ooooh, this may be good. Someone's been in here. I will examine the drill that looks somewhat deadly.

Image

Okay then, fine! >_> Moving on.....

Image

Oh goody, another person doing something greatly suspicious. Let's find out what's up.

Image
......
But, but, but, I thought we were friends. D8

Fine, I'll leave you be since I don't want to agitate people this early in the game. Let's examine that mirror while I'm here. ^_^

Image

Oh snap! The plot thickens. O:

Well, awesome. Now that we know what the murder weapon is, a large part of our job is done. Though, I am not going to pick it up right now for two reasons. One, the murderer will be more prone to kill you quicker if you are carrying the weapon around with you, and two, it's just not that smart to carry a bloody mirror around with you. :\

But, I'll be back for it later once I am ready to form my accusation (if I last that long). Thankfully, this game wasn't advanced enough to have the murderer come back and hide the murder weapon. x.x

Moving onward, my next goal for now is to find the scene of the murder. From what I recall back when I used to play this game in my younger years, it was best to find the identity of the murderer last. Don't ask me why, it just was. (Plus, if you did find out the murderer's identity, they knew that you knew and they would lock you in a room and dispose of you asap)

Image
The ballroom is placed, oddly enough, where the ballroom in Clue is. As you can see, there is no one in this room. But this is to be expected. The game has a strategy in trying to freak you out by making all the guests a bit absent after you find out something important (like the murder weapon). But, I still have some time to spare, so I will examine the floor.

Image

8| I have my contacts in though. Plus, I have the magnifying glass! D:
Oh well, moving on.

Image
Out in the hall again, still admiring the decor.

AND, to save us all some time and screenshots space, I will point out now that I searched the next three rooms on the right of the house and found NOTHING on the floor. B[
(and no people in the rooms, either)

But, in the dining hall...

Image

Finally, a person! PLUS, he's staring at the floor (this is often a sign that there is blood on the floor!). But first, to question Hohenheim.

Image

Like I said, Ante had no friends. Why the heck were they all at her house then? XD But, this also means that both Hohenheim and Peanut's alibi's check out. They are not the murderers. (my job is never as easy as it should be)
Now, to examine the floor.

Image

......
Then why were you staring at it Hohenheim? D:

Blah, off to investigate more. I will start rechecking the rooms I've already been in since the guests tend to move around from room to room a lot.
But while I'm doing so-

Image

Uh-oh! D8
I'm running short on time; the murderer must have seen me running through the house searching for blood on the carpets. I'd better get a move on and find the scene of the crime soon.

I don't know why I was staring at the floor myself. 0_0

Anyway, I am glad I am not the murderer. I just don't have it in me.
