I've read the book series but have yet to see the movie. I may this coming weekend though. Does it follow the book series at all?

From what I've heard, it only covers the first book. They're probably testing the waters. Meaning if this movie sells well, they'll do all five books.

why oh why have I not watched or even heard of this till now ? WHY IS IT THAT I DIDN'T HEAR OF IT???? well the answer is so simple that it's hardly worth asking: these are the disadvantages of living iin a small town with no movie theatre. Plus, I don't think any of my friends have read the books, so they were unable to inform me. T.T
I probably won't be able to watch it till it comes out on DVD...

I think it's PG-13. Not sure though. But I am pretty sure its nothing above that.

Another reason I think they're being cautious is that not all fantasy movies have been successful. Both Eragon and The Golden Compass bombed, for instance. (Actually, I'm kind of glad that The Golden Compass bombed, but I won't get into that)

I agree with you. I won't watch the Golden Compass. Demons? Come on.

Wow, I went to see Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief yesterday and I have to say I did not like it at all. It had absolutely nothing of the book series in it which I was not expecting to begin with but held onto the hope that maybe it would carry on a shred of what the books had to offer. Everything was changed and not in a good way. The movie felt very choppy and watered down. Really, the only characters that were noteworthy were Pierce Brosnan's Chiron and Uma Thurman's Medusa.

I think those that have not read the series will like the movie but for those that have read Rick Riordan's series you're going to want to wait until DVD at least in my opinion then again I've never been a big fan of books made into movies. XD

I enjoy Greek myths and legends but I'm not interested in Percy Jackson (what kind of name is that?) and the Lightning Thief.

Acifford, The Golden Compass novel was very good but the movie was lame. Also, they're not 'demons' but 'daemons'. Daemons are more like an embodiment of a person's individuality or soul.

Percy Jackson was very fun! Now, I didn't read the books...and knew nothing about them before the movie, but really, really enjoyed the movie. But really, how often does one get to see a hydra CG? The CG was fun, even if it was swiss-cheese when it came to plot holes. :)

As for Eragon, it was horrible, yes, but in that horribleness it kind of added to the fun.

I went to see it with acg so I can say that it is violent but it has no gore. Basically if you can watch the live action LOTR movies then you can watch this movie.

It was really good

okay, so I feel I'm missing something here....*whistling* Why is this? Because the gaze still "works" despite being decapitated?

Hydras don't have a gaze. The gorgons (of which Medusa is one) have a stone gaze, and basilisks just have a plain death gaze.

W4J already gave the reason why. According to legend, the hydra had nine heads and if one was cut off, two would grow back in its place. Heracles in his labors found a way to counteract this, by cutting off a head and then burning the neck, it would prevent the heads from growing back. Except of course for the one immortal head, which he just trapped under a rock.

W4J, Percy's name is a nickname. His real first name is Perseus. Yes, like the guy who killed Medusa.

I was very, very disappointed in the movie. Nothing about the movie was the same in the book, and it was just way to different for me to enojoy it. I guess if you haven't read the books, it's an ok movie, but for me, I couldn't bear watching it.

I hear ya and feel your pain. I felt the same way. I was expecting more from this movie adaption. I mean I can't fathom why when you have the series to go from that they feel the need to change everything! Oh well, I guess it's just how Hollywood rolls. ^_^
