I need to name a kitten

Talk about anything in here.

I need to name a kitten

Postby Wikiwalker » Mon Feb 01, 2010 11:15 am

A few weeks ago I found a kitten randomly wandering around starving outside a JoAnn's Fabrics (yes, this happens to me a lot). Usually when I get a new pet a name for that pet comes pretty soon, usually within a week or so, but not this time, this kitten is impossible to name.

So anyway it's a female kitten with very thick, soft, apricot colored fur, and I need some name suggestions because I can't keep calling her "that kitten who sleeps" and similar aliases.

Thanks
Suggest away, please

Off the top of my head...
Furball
Catbreth
Morpheus (greek god of dreams) or Hypnos (greeek god of sleep)
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
May He cause His face to shine upon you.
May He lift up His countenance and grant you peace.

Maokun: Ninjas or Pirates? (Vikings are not a valid answer, sorry)

Fuzzybutt (this name is listed in the cat-dog-names website)

One that I thought of the best is Peaches.

Hmmm...well, if it was a boy, I'd say to name it Kyo - Fruits Basket ftw! - but since I'm pretty sure that's not a gender neutral name...

Our family has always had bizarre names for cats - Sylvia, Coconut, Pumpkin, Carmen, Dottie, Simba, Stubby, Pearl, Xedo, just to mention a few - so my idea of what's appropriate for a cat's name may be a little...off. :)

Hmmm...you say you call her the cat that sleeps, is she really lazy? Or are there periods where she's really adventurous and hyper? Knowing a little more about her personality may help. I like ErictheFred's sleepy greek god ideas, but since it's a she, maybe Nix would be more appropriate? She was the goddess of Night, and Hypnos' mom.

Thanatos' mom, too. T is the Greek god of death... nice Gothic vibe going there...

Kyoko would be the feminine counterpart of Kyo, FWIW.

By the way, I once had a dog named "Daugbreth". My wife renamed him "Lucky" but he stayed "Daugbreth" to me. Still, if we're trying to be all pretty and nice and girly, let's go with Niorun (Norse goddess of dreams) or maybe Brynhild (she was a sleeping beauty-like figure in Norse mythos, a Valkyrie whom Sigurd woke from a magic sleep and married. In Wagner, she's called 'Brunhilde'.) I like that idea; female cats are all secretly either Valkyries or Ninjas anyway.
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
May He cause His face to shine upon you.
May He lift up His countenance and grant you peace.

Well... if she's apricot-colored, I would name her Apricot, lol. That's cute!

Like Apricot, April, Peony, Amelia, Lily, Zuzu. I liked the idea of Mo-mo or Momo too, doesn't it mean "peach" in Japanese?

But my cats' names are Taco and Spud, so uh, feel free to disregard my suggestions... XD

Momo = peach
Anzu = apricot

Both are good choices, actually.
May the Lord bless you and keep you.

If you're stuck on a Japanese tangent, might I suggest Hissori Nemuri?

I've probably got the grammar wrong, but basically it translates as "Silent Sleep."

Fits well for a cat that naps all the time.

If I named a cat Momo then I would expect it to say "Ore...SANJOU!" every time it came in the room and then I'd be disappointed when it didn't.

I heard that it was good to name animals two syllable names and train them with one syllable commands. Supposedly it makes it easier for them to know the difference from a command and their name. Anyways...

A few girl names I grabbed off a quick site - maybe one will catch your eye.

Paka - (Swahili) - cat
Phumla - (Nguni) - now we can rest
Pia - (Latin)- faithful
Roxane - (Persian) - dawn
Rozi - (Swahili) - rose
Tacey - (Latin) - silent
Talia - blooming
Zahra - (Swahili) - beautiful flower
Zakiya - (Arabic) - pure

Yasmin- (Persian) - sweetly scented flower

That sounds bogus to me, given that there are one syllable commands ("sit," "stay") and two syllable commands ("shake hands," "roll over"). It's clear animals can tell the difference between their name and commands, otherwise they wouldn't be able to tell commands apart.

And I don't think you train cats anyway so...

Wow, I really wasn't expecting this big of a response with so many great suggestions, thanks guys.

As for her personality she does sleep most of the time, usually on people, or in front of the fireplace, or on people who happen to be sitting in front of the fire. she really likes people, and when she plays she plays like crazy, but she doesn't play very often, most of the time she is, like I said, sleeping in front of the fire.

Hypnos actually caught my eye, but I'm not sure it will do as is, it may need modification. I need to think of a way to make it sound more feminine. *starts thinking*

Oddly, all my dogs have two syllable names. Never made any decision to do this, but the lab is "Nina", the terrier mix is "Lily" and the chihuahua is "Chester".

However, all of them know the command "Go to your bed!" as well as "Go outside!" and one of them knows "Belly scratch time!" (she responds faster to this than to "Come". From any distance she will run to me and flop over on her back for a scratch. It's how I get her back whenever she manages to get outside the fence.)

Hmm, Peaches does fit pretty well.

Don't worry I don't mind weird names, I used to have dwarf hamsters all named Russian names, and my dog's names are Black Jack Pershing, and Hephzibah, (we call them Jack and Eppie, never their real names), not to mention my parrot named Ransome, and the other cats in my house Scratch, Ada, and Kuro.

Most of my animals end up with a long name that nobody uses, and a short name that might as well be their real one.

I'm definitely considering Peaches.

You could call her Hong Meiling and let her nickname be China, but you probably don't know about that joke.

On second thought there's Remencia [Your Last Name Here] or Rem or Remi for short. The name is an extension of R.E.M. sleep (Rapid Eye Movement) the state your in when you dream. That, and it's an odd name.

Well her name is most definitely Peaches, I heard one of my other siblings using it that means it's definitely going to stick. That's the trick to naming animals around my house, you give it a name and then call it that until everyone starts calling it that, I've had my pets names changed more than once just because someone decided they wanted to call it something else.

Thanks everyone :jump:
