Favorite "old school" anime

Postby rocklobster » Wed Jan 13, 2010 4:18 am

They say no one watches old school anime. Let's prove "them" wrong. List your favorite oldies but goodies. Here are some of mine (note, by old school, I mean pre-1990s):
Ranma 1/2
Speed Racer (watch it on Crunchy Roll!)
Astroboy
Galaxy Express 999 (watch it on Crunchy Roll!)
Captain Harlock

It's kinda sad, but the only thing I can think of is Dragonball Z. Really dug it back in the day. Pre-90s is before my anime time.

Wait!

Nausica and Totoro!

Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam

Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket

Captain Harlock

Fushigi na Koala Blinky (aka: Blinky the Wonderful Koala or Noozles in the USA).

Bubblegum Crisis

Kimagure Orange Road

Little Nemo - Adventures in Slumberland

You probably mean american release . The only series I can think of that has not been mentioned is "Legendary Armor Samurai Troopers"(Ronin Warriors). It was aring in Japan in 88. P.S. Every Gundam made before 1990.

If you are meaning Macross series, then no. I wasn't going by the US release date.

Macross came out Oct of 1982, Macross movie: Do you remember love came out July of 1984, The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Flash Back 2012 came out June of 1987, but I don't count that one. Its just collection of music videos from The Super Dimension Fortress Macross animated television series.

The next thing that came out for Macross in Japan was The Super Dimension Fortress Macross II: Lovers, Again and it was release May 1992 for the 10th Anniversary of Macross.

Ronin Warriors is all kinds of awesome. I can't believe I forgot that series. Now that series should definitely be picked up by Syfy.

Old school anime is mostly all I watch these days!

That being said, favorites include:

- Voltes V (1977-1978)
- Space Runaway Ideon (1980-1981)
- Hyakujuu Ou Go-Lion (1981-1982)
- Mobile Suit Gundam movie trilogy (1981-1982)
- Armored Trooper Votoms (1983-1984)
- Double Zeta Gundam (1986-1987)
- Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket (1989)

PS Sailor Moon doesn't count yet because it came out in 1992. XD

Future Boy Conan all other Miyazaki or Studio Ghibli productions are too recent to be considered 'old school'.

Voltron
Thundercats
Ronin Warriors
Robot Carnival
Vampire Hunter D
DBZ
Tekkaman Blade
Sailor Moon( have to admit)
Speed Racer
Gundam
Akira
The Guyver
8th Man After

The further back I go the harder it is for me to recall the classics. I'm not that old either so you really can't expect too much before the 90's. I have more though, just can't remember.

I actually watch more "old school" anime than new ones, generally. Part of it is 'cos I'm still catching up on all the cool stuff I saw on the shelves of blockbuster or the back pages of EGM but never actually watched. But also, I prefer Sci-Fi to Fantasy, so a lot of the older stuff just seems more appealing than a lot of the newer anime.

That rant aside:

Robot Carnival
Neo-Tokyo
Super Dimension Fortress Macross
Castle of Cagliostro
Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise
Mobile Police Patlabor

And there's a LONG list of other old school anime I still want to watch but either don't have yet or simply haven't seen enough to form an oppinion of.

I think the only anime old enough to be on this list that I've seen is Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.

Oh, and I've seen a couple clips of Victory Gundam! Though I don't know if that's old enough to count.

Oh wait, I know what would beat everything on this list: Momotaro's Divine Sea Warriors. It's Japan's first feature length animated film and predates the first airing of Astro Boy by nearly 20 years. Granted, it's also an INCREDIBLY creepy propaganda about a bunch of cute animals who join that army and fight off the evil, western ogres, so I probably shouldn't speak too highly of it...
