For those of you have read any of the Black Jack manga, how graphic are the surgical depictions?

I've never actually read it myself (though I've been interested in it; the story seems neat), but I can't imagine a graphic surgery in Osamu Tezuka's art style. XD Keep looking into it, but I don't suppose graphic images of surgery would really be a problem, considering Tezuka's very cartoony style.

I'm just wondering because there's a small image of a ribcage(?) opened up on the cover of the first volume. I've only thumbed through the books and read a preview chapter( the about the whale). I know that the characters are drawn in Tezuka's signature style, I'm just not sure about their insides. I've read some reviews that mentioned that Tezuka, being a doctor in real life(well at least having a degree), made the drawings very realistic.

I've only seen the anime and it can get pretty graphic (nothing way out there.. I don't think), but that doesn't necessary mean the manga is :-? People tend to say manga is more detailed, so... I'm not really sure to tell you the truth xDDD;;

It depends on what you mean by "graphic". Tezuka himself was a surgeon, so he does go into visual detail when comes to depicting surgical instruments and a couple of retraction shots. While the majority of the Black Jack manga is that cartoony style, it's the surgery parts that are in vivid detail. Basically what you'd find in an anatomy text book.

Nothing overly gory though?

You do see some severed limbs, but not very graphic, just in Tezuka's loose style. If you've ever watched E.R. or House, it's about that graphic in the surgery segments.
