Today, my mom was talking about going to the Renaissance Festival and somehow that got my brother asking me (my mom wasn't around) about going to the local anime convention. Problem is, I'm not sure he should go. He has no idea what it's like (my mom only knows that's it's "more sexually lenient," I don't think she knows about yaoi) and I don't want to have to explain the bad things there. He just thinks it's a place to walk around in costume and talk to people.
He's 14 and much more immature than me, and I don't want him to do anything stupid or start saying things (he already thinks I have issues because I decided not to go to a Catholic school while he did).

EDIT: I talked to my mom. My brother won't be going. Neither will I. I asked her to pray about it, ask God if it really is a problem for me to be around it even though I will have nothing to do with it. I don't know if she will or won't...

I went to my first anime convention last year and I am about to go to one this weekend. Last year I saw Scott McNeil (who was very awesome and entertaining!) and this year I am meeting Johnny Yong Bosch. :thumb: As for the convention, there are a lot of people in costume. In fact, I felt uncomfortable being there without wearing one. There are the occassional weirdos around (like a grown man wearing a dolly dress with a giant lolly pop...I am not sure what anime that is from :() but nothing so different than what I have seen in comic book conventions. Luckly there are plently of video game rooms around. Ahh, the video game rooms. It reminds me of the early 90s arcades...oh how I miss them! :sniffle: I just stayed in the game room for most of the convention. OH HOW I MISSED REAL COMPETITION AGAINST A STRANGER!!! I WILL DEFEAT THEM AT STREET FIGHTER 4, BLAZBLUE AND TEKKEN!!! :mutter:

Opps..sorry.
I got a little off track there...but yeah, sorry to hear you cannot go. But I really do not think I would be able to handle a anime con at even your age. They are rather frantic. :eh:

I'll pray that she comes to a fair conclusion/decision ^__^

Just me saying, but just because all of those elements are there, doesn't mean you have to partake in them :) In a way, it just just simply walking around looking at stuff and meeting others ^__^ It's up to you if you want to get wrapped up in that sort of thing ^^ No one can force you to do anything :) If anyone tries to pull you into any of that stuff, just walk away ^^ If someone does, scream bloody murder to get the authority's attention D:<

Yeah...at least I didn't get my reservation yet. I've been to two conventions before, didn't get into anything bad. I'm okay with handling how crazy a con can be. Detour is well put together, but my mom said I "shouldn't be exposing myself to homosexual stuff, it's not what God wants."
Thing is, besides that, Ren Fest is the only other event I go to all year. Meh...

That's a bit silly, I think, for a couple of reasons. First, yaoi is really only a niche of a niche market, it's not like it's really that prominent in Japan. It's just rabid fanboys/girls in America that make it so big. You can't really take conventions as a good example of reality because if you went to a Star Trek convention, it would seem Star Trek is the most beloved TV show of all time. No, it isn't, it's just rabid fans that take it to an extreme.

Second, we have once again a clear example of a "heirarchy of sins," we'll say, in that no sin is more wrong than another sin, it's all sin in God's eyes. There's lots of content in the world, but we can't just sit in a little bubble and avoid everything in the world. Does she say not to watch the news because you shouldn't be exposing yourself to greed, corruption, and murder? Somehow I doubt that. To be fair, I realize the news doesn't portray those things as good, and yaoi fans do tend to have the tendency to portray yaoi as good, but if they're not saved should we expect anything less?

That said, you're young, and the Bible does say to honor your parents, so even if it's silly you still should obey her, but you seem intelligent enough to already know that. That said, I'll say a prayer for you, I hope you can get to Ren Fest.

Yeah. I'll be going this weekend.
My mom can be controlling at times and knows that guilt trips can get me to do/not do things. And yes, she does pull the "honor thy father and mother" card a lot.
