Disney Buys Marvel

Postby ashfire » Mon Aug 31, 2009 8:13 am

I just read that Disney has bought Marvel for 4 Billion dollars. I guess includes the movie corp too. So next time Spiderman, X Men or Fantastic 4 comes out it will a Disney/Marvel corp.
Also all the comic books and other things. I can see it now. Spiderman crawling down the Disney Castle or the Marvel charactors at the Disney Parks.

I just read about this as well. It's pretty crazy that Disney bought Marvel for 4 billion.

The real news here is in a small little sidenote:

UPDATE #2: John Lasseter met with Marvel last week about a possible team-up between Marvel and Pixar and got "pretty excited, pretty fast." They say there's definitely an opportunity there.

If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things."

This could go either way. Marvel's movies were never really all that great anyway (except Iron Man) so there's not much to lose there.

Well, Iron Man represented a shift in that Marvel had taken control of their own properties and started making movies the way that they saw fit with them. As long as Disney continues to give them autonomous directoral control over the films, there is no reason to believe the trend should do anything but continue.

You know, if this had happened a few years ago, the Kingdom Hearts franchise could have turned out quite differently.

Oddly enough, Universal studios has all that sort of thing, particularly Islands of Adventure in Orlando. Examples include a Hulk themed Roller coaster and a Spiderman ride. Interesting to see what happens there particlularly with that park competing with the Disneyworld complex.

additionally, Spiderman and Xmen are still properties contracted out to Universal, so Disney's gonna have to pull in the power to get them away.

I dunno. "I wanna take ya for a magic carpet ride" just doesn't sound quite right.
On the other hand, I'd be interested to see what kind of Super Combos Mowgli or the March Hare might have.

If you do the secret Mowgli combos, you can summon bears and tigers.

And I really hope Disney doesn't meddle with Marvel's stuff.

The anthropomorphic funny animal parody of Marvel Comics' Spider-Man that was created by Tom DeFalco and Mark Armstrong.

Considering that Lassiter was a driving force behind Disney returning to what they're good at (2D hand animation) and leaving what they aren't as good at (3D cartoon movies, direct to DVD sequels) either to the people that are good at them (Pixar) or dropping them outright, I would suspect and hope that he keeps that mindset towards Marvel, letting them do what they're good at while preventing them from doing anything dumb.

Also, the deal still has to be approved, probably by the FTC.

Or perhaps I just believe Marvel is headed down a route that is somewhat akin to that of One Piece being picked up by 4kids.

Which is somewhat akin to Marvel owning Marvel.

Marvel is at its best when they give books to writers and let them do whatever they want with the characters. Example:

Brubaker on Captain America, Daredevil and Iron Fist

J. Michael Straczynski on Thor.

and Pak and Van Lente on Hercules.

EDIT: TO be fair, This also causes some of their titles to suffer Example: Bendis on The Avengers.

How do you know that so early on?

One Piece clearly suffered from bad translation, from 4Kids' gross misunderstanding of the demographic they were trying to reach with the show, and from heavy-handed attempts to make the series 100% "kid friendly".

Disney is a corporate giant. It owns far more than just the Disney that puts out Bambi and the Happiest Place on Earth. It hasn't run its other owned enterprises into the ground with attempts to paste a happy-fun-time family smile on everything. We don't know how much autonomy they're going to be offering Marvel -- it could be complete creative autonomy for all we know, and if they know their market then I think that would be the wisest and most lucrative move for them. The decision to buy, I would imagine, was more of a business venture and less of an attempt to stifle the comic book world's creativity.

Bottom line: We really don't know enough about what will come of this deal yet. Definitely not enough to make statements like that.

And I still want to see Darkwing Duck/Marvel crossover.

Yep.

Hey, Bambi is more like Hell on Earth than the Happiest Place. That's a terrifying movie.

And if the merger gets more people into comics (and buying from my store), I'm all for it! One thing that's angered me a bit is the lack of effort Disney has put into their comics lately. However, seeing as Pixar's doing well with Boom! Studios, maybe Disney will bring back its comic titles (like Gargoyles! A GARGOYLES/AVENGERS CROSSOVER I WOULD BUY THAT)

Apparently everyone here has forgotten that Disney is the company that makes LOST and every other ABC show (Greys Anatomy and Desperate Housewives), and will claim those characters as Disney characters (half jokingly).

They also own and control the entire ESPN brand, Miramax (There Will be Blood, Clerks 2, Doubt), Touchstone (Shanghai Noon, Pearl Harbor, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Gone in 60 Seconds) the Muppets (though they haven't done much with it yet), part of History channel (combined with Hearst and NBC), all of Fox Family/SABAN's assets and SOAPnet among other things.

They definitely aren't just all about cutesy princesses and cartoons.

Bendis on Ultimate Spiderman was amazing.

Let us also praise Mark Millar in Ultimates 2. Whoo!

No, but seriously. The Comic industry has been in the toilet for the last couple years anyway. Every other month they're coming out with "THE BIGGEST MOST AWFUL THING TO HAPPEN TO THE EARTH EVARRR!!!!1!!one!!!" Disney can't hurt it that much.
