Ponyo English Theme...

Postby Cloud500 » Thu Aug 06, 2009 8:16 pm

I found this today... I guess because Disney has Jonas/Cyrus siblings as the voices of the main characters in the film they felt the need to do this.

Here it is...ugh...

Yeah, I'm really excited for the movie. It looks great. But that was just awful. I guess it's because they have different people adapting the movie. The kids' voices in the actual movie fit the characters, but I still have no idea why they thought it necessary to change the theme into a cheesy pop mess. It would have been fine if they just had someone sing the original lyrics in english with the original background music. That's what Funimation did with One Piece and that seemed to work well.

And I thought the Japanese version was annoying.

So Disney is actually trying to market Ponyo for mass teenybopper audiences? I hate how people are saying this is "their" movie. It's by one of the most esteemed animated film directors goshdarnit!

I mean, I guess I'm glad it'll be more popular... but it's much cooler when they hire talented Hollywood actors who will do a great job, not random siblings of Disney Channel stars...... This is going to be as painful as the Fannings on Totoro... (I guess my ideal would be esteemed actors, but they aren't used to playing children in America, I guess)

Well considering the original was kind of like this (With the Ponyo, Ponyo, Ponyo part). I would say for the target audience (which ARE teeny boppers, considering this movie feels more like a Totoro type, rather than something like Princess Mononoke.

So its not too surprising... ^^;

Disney thinks just because they can put the names "Cyrus" or "Jonas" in the credits means that they have to. The fact that it's just the younger siblings of Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers proves it. I'm pretty sure Walt would't stand for this.

I plan on seeing the movies in theaters just becaouse it's a rare chance to see anime on the big screen in America. Once its realesed on DVD I'll stick with the Japanese dub.

Edit: Ponyo may have a round tummy, but after actually hearing that sickening song, mine is empty.

The movie looks like it will be adorable and I ADORE Myazaki. ....But you cannot force me to love that song. It sounded like something you'd hear on Nick Jr.

I can't wait to see the movie, with subtitles, that is. While Disney's dubs are better than most, it's still blah. And the song. Oh god, the song. What can I say. It's Disney. Oh god, the song. >.<

Whoa, whoa whoa. Hold the phone.
Is Disney going to have Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers do voices? or are they going to have family members? Either way, that would really suck and would possibly cause bleeding to my brain.

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in paths of righteousness For His name's sake. Even though I walk though the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me. Thou dost prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; Thou hast anointed my head with oil; My cup overflows. I haven't heard the original Japanese song and if you say it’s just as annoying I’ll believe you, but I could not finish that song and I think some of my brain cells have just self destructed.

To tell you the truth, I've heard things more annoying than this. XP

Echoing a bit of what CK said, I'm sure Disney does not care about anime fans concerning this movie. Their target audience is preteens and younger kids, hence why they got who they got to sing the theme.
After listening to the original theme song of Ponyo and this new one, then comparing the two, they are very much alike in translation, but the newer one is "rocked up" a bit (to make it more appealing to the Cyrus/Jonas fans, no doubt).

Nevertheless, I don't think this will affect my decision to see the movie. :)

Gross.

I'd rather hear the little Japanese kid and the slightly off key older singer try to sing to something melodic than this electronic affront to God and Man.

I went to go see Ponyo last Friday, which was excellent, and yes, they did use that awful English remix towards the end of the credits. But at the beginning they played the regular English theme song, which sounded fine to me. I just hate the the remix is the only one out on the web right now.

O.o ITS HIDEOUS! IT"S NOT EVEN MUSIC ITS CHEERLEADING! ITS ITS... Its INHUMANE!

>< Oh that's aweeeful! And Hayao thought the first dubbing of Totoro was bad...

I wonder if they'll have the credits in japanese on the dvd... some opt just to keep the music the same and let you hear japanese voices. (thinks back to some of her sailor moon dvds)

Actually I saw the movie on the 10th as part of a sneak preview down here in miami, and the kids did great, their voice acting seemed to fit well with the characters. I thought all the others did ok too, but my bro thought liam neilson's voice acting seemed a bit off for the character.

But in other news I do agree this song is horrible.

I guess these kids can't actually sing since they modified their voices all to heck.

Wow, that's awful. XD I wonder why they're bothering to re-write the songs, anyways? I mean, aside from the fact that the Jonas and Cyrus families are being milked like cattle for Disney's money, Disney has always left the ending themes of Miyazaki's films alone. I always preferred the quiet, folksy-sounding Japanese songs at the end of his movies, but this just sounds like a train wreck, in the worst way. XD

That's vile. I don't care if Disney wants to make Ponyo appeal to a larger audience...THEY SHOULD NEVER USE AUTOTUNE AGAIN! Just leave the ending theme the way it is! I agree with firestorm, though. The voice acting itself was decent, but I don't think Noah Cyrus suited Ponyo that well, and Tina Fey was a mediocre Lisa. However, the ending theme is alright up until the Autotune part...oh goodness...

The song actually doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would. Yes it's more poppy, but so what? I have a feeling the original song wouldn't appeal to American kids as much BECAUSE of that. American tweens would immediately compare it to HSM, Hannah Montana, Jonas Brothers, etc. and think it was stupid. Giving it a more upbeat and poppy tempo makes more sense from a marketing standpoint, plus I think Japan will love it just as much. Their kids loved HSM and all that stuff just as much as America did, so they'll probably think this is great if they hear it. :p

Also I can't really complain too much since, doesn't Miyazaki have to approve this stuff first? Last I knew, Disney didn't get to screw with his films unless he gave the ok on it.
