What Should I Do?

Postby Riggidig » Mon Aug 03, 2009 8:42 pm

Ok, so I currently own a PS2 with about 15 games on it. There's this underpriviledged kid I know who's mom is divorced and cleans houses for a living. The little dude really likes to play on my PS2 now and then. Unfortunately all his mom could afford to get him 3 years ago was a PS1. He has a birthday coming up in November and I was thinking of selling my PS2, 2 controllers, memory card and 5 of my games at a quarter the price a new PS2 console goes for over here in South Africa (I bought the console less than a year ago, second hand, when it was about 6 months old, for a bit more than half the price an original console goes for, along with an extra controller, memory card, and 2 games, all included in the price).

Now, is this being fair of me? I don't want to rip the lady off or anything. Should I be asking her something in the first place? It's just that it feels a bit much to let such a thing go for free (hope I'm not coming across as being selfish or insensitive here).

Secondly, after my console has gone, what should I get after that? I'll still have a couple of games left. Should I get a PS2 again? Should I save up for an XBOX? (PS3 is just WAY too expensive for me right now) I've been thinking of getting an LCD TV with a VGA connection sometime within the next 6 months or so, so should I rather focus more on upgrading my PC so I can play my PC games through that?

Advice appreciated. God bless

Ok, well, I do think it is a good offer considering you are giving him the other stuff thrown in; however let me say this. Are you sure the system will run at optimum efficiency? Why Im asking is that a while back I too got a PS2(2003) and played it to death, literally(It died about 2006 or 07). So I had to get a new system. You want to make sure it runs well and has no problems before selling it. If you were just giving it away, I wouldn't ask this, but I must since you are.

I don't know about XBOXs because I don't own one, but I would say you should get another PS2 if you love the games you have and that you know of more that you want to get.

I don't know about PC stuff, so maybe someone else can help you there.

Well so far I haven't had any issues with it. In total I'd say the system is about a year old. It's a 72004 model by the way.

There ARE a couple of titles I'd still like to get, so getting a PS2 again DOES seem like a viable option. Although there are some pretty cool games available on the XBOX as well...

Thanks :-)

I would save your money for a newer PS2 or to upgrade your PC ^^

XBox's are good, but I heard they over heat way too easily >_>; Even with the extra fan ^^;

Yeah. I've heard that as well. Apparently they've solved the problem with the new Jasper chipset that they've put in the newer models but one is still sceptic...

Just give it away to him for free, or is that not an option?

I'm kinda with MSP on this one. If I was in your position, I'd probably give my PS2 to the family.

As for what to replace it with, take a look at the game libraries available for the various systems and choose the ones you are most interested in. Then compare the lists and decide what to do. For me, PC gaming barely exists anymore, so my PC has fallen by the wayside (it was a mid-end system 7 years ago and has only been upgraded once, about 4 years ago, with a mid-end video card at the time).

Some people play more PC games than I, though. As for consoles, most of my favorite games are on the PS2 already, so I have one of those; at the same time, if my PS2 died, I don't think I'd replace it. There's nothing new on it, and I've already beat my entire PS2 library.

As for replacement systems, if you're on the go a lot, a DS or a PSP might be a reasonable alternative. The PSP has a fair library of older remakes that actually are really good, and the DS continually puts out creative and interesting titles.

For consoles, the 360 and the PS3 are both decent. Honestly, if you are capable of saving up for a 360, a PS3 is in your price range. For online gaming, the 360's costs rise, as you'll need an XBL Gold membership, which raises the entry bar a bit. Personally, I think the 360 has a better library due to having a larger number of titles that I enjoy, but most of my PS3 games I prefer over any of my 360 games.

In short: The PS3 really won't break the bank that much if you're interested in online play due to the additional costs involved in online play for the 360. For offline-only gaming, the 360 is going to be the cheaper route. In any case, you shouldn't completely overlook the PSP or the DS if you don't already have one, but the bottom line is this:

Buy the system that best fits your needs and your gaming preferences.

And that means looking at the available game libraries for each and taking the time to consider the options. None of us can make the decision for you on what games you will enjoy.
Embraced by a gentle breeze, my heart breaks as I think of you.
All alone at the top of the hill, I watch as the seasons go by.
--
Wishing for courage softly, I pray.
There's no going back now, to those tender days when you held me in your arms.

They live in a bachelor flat, alongside a house. His mom cleans houses and receives food packages from the church (I'm feeling worse and worse as I type this by the way).

Do what God leads you to do. What we get for blessing others is far better than anything on this earth. It's about pleasing God first. Our treasure is in Heaven. =)

What games do you prefer and enjoy playing the most?

THIS!

Yes, ultimately it is what God leads you to do. I agree that you will receive more joy blessing others than pleasuring ourselves. Nothing in this world(Other than God's word, God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and heaven) are eternal. Believe me, everything on earth is soon going to pass away so that's why you should do as Ryan said(You don't have to do it, it's really your decision.), put stock into the treasure that awaits you in heaven by blessing others with your wealth. Just as you bless others, God will bless you. If it doesn't happen here, it will happen in heaven.

I'm really sorry to turned this into a spiritual thing, but I think that's sort of what it is and how it should be addressed.

Mostly fighting, platform, 3D action/adventure. The other day, I got me, for the first time EVER (apart from Super Mario Kart for the SNES and GBA) a racing game (Burnout 3).

If I were you, I'd give it to the little guy. What's a couple bucks worth compared to the joy on someone's face when you give them an awesome gift?

I would say that either way you're doing them a charity, either by giving them discount or giving it away so I agree. Do what God's led you to do. As for your future gaming goodness, if you mostly play fighting games then I'd go with the 360. Depending on the monitor you can plug one in anyway, and if it was a TV you're getting and not a monitor, then you'll get a LOT of love from your 360. Plus it and the PS3 are pretty much on par for fighting games these days.

I know what you mean Crimson. It would be an awesome feeling.

My mother feels though, that giving it away is overkill. It's not that she's selfish or anything. Me and my mom are also going through a bit of a financial nip at the moment (my dad hasn't sent her any financial support for more than a year and a half and her resources are being depleted, so you have to understand from her side), so for me to "give away" something that's rather expensive is not sitting that well with her. You also have to keep in mind that we live in South Africa, so what you guys in the States might consider as "not a lot" would actually be "quite a bit" to us over here.

It's a difficult situation I'm in at the moment, since I'm caught in the middle.

One thing I'm also worried about though, is, if I DO decide to give it away for free, that his mom might consider it an insult. If you understand what I'm saying, like I think that they're THAT poor that they need charity. I mean, she's already receiving food packets from the church.

The more I type about this the more conflicted I'm feeling inside...

Well even selling it for a discounted price can be a very selfless act indeed.

Just do what you feel compelled to do. =)
