Characters you hated to see die (spoilers aplenty!)

Death is pretty common in anime. Sometimes it seems they can really make us hate to see characters die. So, which characters did you hate to see die?

Maybe it will be good if you separated the spoilers by series. I just was horribly spoiled in one of the series I'm watching. I'd be more upset if I didn't see it coming, but still a small part of me was holding up hopes for him.

I have to admit, I'm with Roy on this one. While there are some deaths that were sad, and rockolobster's Shippuden one(I'm unaware of how to spoiler) made me cry, I can't say I've seen any that weren't well done or neccessary. Not saying that I wouldn't mind the character surviving sometimes.

Fllay Allster- I HATED HER BUT I CAN'T HELP BUT CRY TO THE FACT THAT SHE WAS NEVER BEEN ABLE TO APOLOGIZE TO EVERYONE TO WHAT SHE HAD DONE. She was immature, lost and bad but she realized her mistakes and wanted to make up with everyone. WAR IS SO
Stellar Loussier- I know she killed a lot of people, but she was being controlled. Reminds me of sin taking control of us.
Rey Za Burrel/ Dullindal/ Talia- A sad "family" death

I think true enjoyment of fiction comes from being able to suspend disbelief and treat the characters and situations as real. Of course, good stories nearly always have death in them, but at the same time I still hate to see some characters die. Heck, I even hate to see some characters die in my own stories. Does their death help the story? In some cases, yes. Doesn't make it suck any less.

As for Grave of the Fireflies, it was mostly a true story [spoiler] The biggest exception being that "Seita" (not his real name) didn't die in real life... Because he was the author of the book. His death was metaphorical.[/spoiler]

That's why my parents would rather want me to watch animes than cartoons when I was young. They don't like the idea of loony toons each other for fun or bullying. My father says that in animes we see characters bleed, cry and fight for a reason. I'm not saying that cartoons are bad, sometimes they are just as violent.

After having just finished Air...

I'm gonna guess Kano finally (and peacfully) settled in the girl on the beach when Misuzu and Yukuito meet for the first time, so at least she got her peace at the end, finally knowing the love of a mother, but that doesn't make either death any less sad. Also, Yukito's only purpose being to free Kano from her nightmares seemed kind of wasteful to me... His death seemed a bit pointless in that regard. So, I suppose I really don't like that death, but Misuzu's death was just really sad.[/spoiler]

I was actually a bit sad that he died, especially since that meant the series was over and he was the only real character that interested me besides Matt whose small roll was kinda pathetic. I was actually rooting for Light most of the time too. L was just too boring to me, I was all "SHEYAH, GO LIGHT" when he dropped ded. Oh, I bet I just angered some fangirls.[/spoiler]

Wolf's Rain:

[spoiler]Cher and Darcia. Cher's death just came out of NOWHERE. It was liek, "OMGWTFBBQ." And she and Hubb had just resolved their relationship! Not even a minute afterward! That killed me inside. Darcia's downfall was just plain sad and pitiful to watch.[/spoiler]

Personally, I don't mind anime deaths. I do agree that they add a great deal of drama. But it SUCKS greatly if it's your fave that dies; and when everyone just dies left and right as to paint a "no-hope", nihilistic message; that's when I totally give up on a show.

BTW, The only anime death that I hated the most and I can't get over even if it's been over 10 years since I've watched it is:

People may rant over and over that he just deserved to die because of the crimes he had done, but I see him as an unlucky victim of circumstance; with nothing else to live for but his pride; and realized too late that he actually has a family to hold on to aside from that. I could say a lot more, but I don't want to launch into another morality diatribe. He would've done a lot of good things to make up for what he did (he saved his younger half-bro Kenichi in the end and died as a result); maybe he has to die to redeem himself but still....[/spoiler]

I don't think that's the point of the thread. If I'm reading it correctly, the point is to list whose deaths had particular emotional effect on you. Perhaps it would then be better said that you could list some of the character deaths which you found most effective in their narrative purpose.

Ah you brought this back from the obscurity of my selective memory. [spoiler]I'd dare say the whole series stands better than any single ep as a slow, unavoidable story of the death of humanity both literal and metaphorically represented in the deaths of the main characters. Great series but "Bleak" doesn't even start to define it.[/spoiler]

Surprisingly, I rarely seem to get attached to the characters who end up dieing, so I had to think pretty hard to come up with an answer here. Eventually, I found myself settling on an answer several people have already mentioned:

Code Geass:
[spoiler]Euphemia: Even though I found her kind of annoying most of the time, the sheer "cosmic accident" aspect of her death, not to mention the chaos it unleashed, packed quite a wallop. It also represents one of the last points that I actually cared about Code Geass, so that's kind of sad as well. [/spoiler]

I didn't cry over this, but it was very sad. I found it worse than the other "big" FMA death, since that one was spoiled for me before I watched the series.

It seems that my favorite character is usually the one to kick the can first. And somehow, I'm always surprised and sad when it happens. As awful as it is to watch a beloved character die, I don't think I would ever change any of these. They add depth to their stories, some of them have ramifications that are necessary to the story, and they're so much better than them sort-of-dying-but-then-they're-okay

This one comes first, since I just watched it the other day and it's in the forefront of my mind:

Death Note
[spoiler]L! I was totally not expecting it, and all through that prolonged scene where he breathes his last, I was sure that somehow he'd get out of it somehow. He had to! He was too cool to die! I didn't actually cry, but I just sat frozen in my chair for a long time after that. It was a beautifully-done death scene, and very fitting for him, but still, to see him defeated like that....[/spoiler]

FMA (first anime)
[spoiler]Hughes, of course. He was the happiest, silliest of all the characters, so of course he was the one who had to die first. What I love about it is that he died trying to help Ed and Al, and his last words were, "I have a wife and kid at home."
Nina Tucker. That was really the first death of the series (not counting their mother, I suppose), and when she was turned into a chimera and then killed, that was the first time I was utterly convinced that this wasn't just a casual, enjoyable story. It's a story of life and death and sacrifice, and so much deeper than anything I'd seen before that.
Scar. After all that time of trying to hunt Ed down and kill him, he actually ended up giving his life to help him. I always tear up in his final scene where he says, "I wanted to tell my brother that I loved him."
Lust. Like Scar, she's a villain who actually ended up helping Ed and Al. I like how she was given more depth by wondering whether she's human or whether she has a soul, and where she came from and where she's going. It's very sad that the main reason she wanted to become human was so she could die.
Edward Elric. Yeah, I know he comes back to life and everything, but his death devastated me the first time I saw Episode 50. After all he'd gone through, all the sacrifices he'd made, he ended up with nothing....[/spoiler]

Haibane Renmei
[spoiler]Kuu's death was really sad. She was always so cheerful, and then when she had her Day of Flight, she left Rakka so sad....[/spoiler]

Last Exile
[spoiler]Dio Eraclea. Just when I stopped thinking of him as a weird villain and started liking his strange personality, all of that was taken away from him. It made Maestro Delphine even more evil than before.[/spoiler]

Wolf's Rain
[spoiler]Well, basically everybody, but Toboe got me the most. He was the most "innocent" of all of them, and all he wanted was just to comfort Quent and help people out, but he was the first to die. I get so choked up when I watch the scene where Tsume tells Toboe goodbye [/spoiler]

Vision of Escaflowne
[spoiler]Folken. It's been a long time since I've seen it, but I remember I was really sad when he died. Older brothers who sacrifice themselves for their younger brothers' sake always get me.[/spoiler]
