Conventions 2009

Talk about anything in here.

Postby Ante Bellum » Sun May 17, 2009 4:26 pm

I enjoyed the Artist's Alley at Detour. My friends bought pins and such there, and I talked to a couple maillers who happened to be there.
Agreeing with ADXC, it's always nice to appreciate the art there (and keep the artists in business!).

Yeah, it's been a LONG time since I bought anything in the Dealer's Room, but I end up getting more Artist Alley stuff every con I go to.

For me, it's an urgency matter. Official stuff is pretty much always floating around the webernet, so there's not much of a rush to buy it RIGHT THEN. You never know when someone's fan art or self-printed webcomic collection will sell out and never be seen again, though.

I only go to the Artist's Alley to meet a good friend of mine and ex CAA member and that is about it.

Most of the time, I live in the Dealer's Room. At AWA, that is where they guest signings and then I'm at Asylum anime table to look and buy the anime cels that they have.

That's all I buy at anime cons or maybe pick up something that is very rare and can't get it online.

@ Roy-Well actually I will admit that the Dealer's Room does have cool stuff too. I usually look in the replica or imported sections.

@ Blitz-Yeah, I feel the same way. It is an urgency matter. Last year I bought a woodburnt keychain of Ichigo! Really, can you find that just anywhere?

Wow, Roy, the dealer's rooms you hang out at are way nicer than the ones I know (they just sell the same DVDs, manga, and T-shirts as everyplace else)

For anyone who's might be making a stopover in Singapore on 13-16 August, there's the Singapore, Toy, Games & Comic Convention (STGCC). A good place for collectors to stock up their Gundam & Anime models - I heard they sell at pretty low prices.

Official site here.

Well, I just got back from AZ, and it was great... and I feel like I'm about to pass out.

Next con MAY be Otakon, but that's really up in the air right now (very few of my pals will be going, and they're the only way I can afford to go myself)

Yeah, Animazment was great. However, I miss the ones the did in the Sheraton in Durham more for some reason. (Maybe it's because I didn't have to go up and down stairs to get to each panel, the artist's alley, and the Deal'er's Room.) But I enjoyed myself.

@ Blitz- Did you see NOIZ perform? They were great! I bought one of their CDs from the depths of the Dealer's Room. I also got to get Spike Spencer to sign my book, he's very funny, but don't go to his late panels. Anyway, did you encounter anything fun too?

I didn't make it to either of the concerts (lines are not my friends) but I definitely had a great time. In fact, this may have been one of the best Animazements ever for me.

I've actually got some cartoons on the subject, as a matter of fact :D

Are all these comics your's? Good work!

Yeah, I thought the convention was very different from previous years based on where it was. I still miss the ones in Durham because they made it seem like there was more CON then Convention center. But that's just me.

Looking at one of your comics, I think I remember seeing you! The Lupin III cosplay. But I doubt you remember me. We never really spoke.

Yeah, conventions are such sensory overload, it kind of takes a lot for my brain to register "Oh hey! That guy!"

And thanks!

You know what I wish there was in my city? An anime club. Too bad I know of none.

I feel a haiku coming on.

Only thing would be to start looking around for people who share your interest in anime and work together to draw more people into your group.
Acourse you could put up flyers at bookstores or video places about starting a club. Thats how I became aware of a club starting and joined.
Only reason I am not in one now is because the group after awhile had differences and the community college where we met said we couldn't meet there anymore because none of their students were attending our meetings.
It was started by a student who allowed outside people to join and most of the students graduated but stayed with the club but other students wouldn't join after that. Some say a member of the club may have scared away new members because of his actions at meetings or events.
I have not found another group like ours to join and have fun with.

The only anime clubs I've been in have been through school, and they were just ok. So don't feel bad.

@ BlitzKrieg-You're lucky man. I wish I could attend more than one convention a year. But unfortunately money and the travel are issues.

Anime Expo would only be a possibility for me if I DIDN'T live on the wrong side of the country (or maybe it's AX that's on the wrong side?)

Oh, believe you me, those are major issues for me too. I'm just irresponsible enough to go anyway.

I'll be going to Otakon with IchiTone and our friend Kenny. We've got a room reserved at the Radisson, but money is extremely tight. We would gladly accept a fourth roommate to help us spread out the cost if anyone needs a place to stay.

I get back from 12 days in Japan the Thursday of Otakon, will probably drag my jet-lagged body to Baltimore that evening just to pick up the pre-reg packet (I have no desire to stand in line for three hours Friday morning).

I've taken to staying in hotels halfway between Baltimore and DC: easier than driving home, and much cheaper than downtown.

@Doubleshadow: Sorry you can't make the 'con! :(
