My Bio

Postby Mithrandir » Thu Jun 26, 2003 11:35 pm

I was born (an event common to some people, or so I'm told) on a large rock hurtling through space at a very high rate of speed. Rought 93 million miles away was an ongoing, uncontrolled fusion reaction that thoroughly baked the skin of a half baked hyper-active spot of existance.

(Translation: I grew up in Bakersfield, CA. You know, about 15 miles west of Hell.)

Studies show that few people actually read the midle paragraph of a post like this, so I'll leave it out. In fact, that's probably the best bio I can come up with. Being ADHD and lazy, I never seem to finish what I st

Anyway, I'm through with

People who write below their abilities in order to crank out tons of books and make a buck. Especially Christian authors who do that. Outsiders judge us for it, and make fun of us for it, and it makes Jesus look bad. We of all artists on earth should be the most concerned with doing our best possible work at all times. We of all people should write with all our hearts, as if writing for the Lord and not for men.

I accuse people of committing persiflage. Satire is a compliment. Honestly, as Christians I don't think we should be too flippant. Perhaps it's an issue of defining terms...

Ah, but I would call that satire (that is, satirical in nature). Apparently he perfers the older and decidedly more impressive looking persiflage. No insult intended, just different terms.

Now I'm curious. Did you get anyone to come to meetings on a regular basis (if they weren't forced by their parents)?

Actually, my thesis was more a quick survey/questionnaire, and the students only had to come once to fill it out. It was really more a research study than a support group. My study was regarding the self-perceptions of students with ADHD in their social lives, and whether they're lonely or socially dissatisfied due to difficulties stemming from the disorder.

I have done groups with students with ADHD in them, but they are usually class-wide, so that the students with ADHD are there anyway, and it's not exclusively students with ADHD. I have also done a small group that included students with ADHD--we focused mostly on anger/impulse control. It was quite a task to keep all the students with me at any given time. Not surprisingly, I had more success when we were actually doing things like role plays or games than when we were just talking. I've never done a group specifically for students with ADHD, but it would certainly be interesting!

From the other side of that fence, it's quiet a task for them to stay focused in a group environment.

Yes. Yes it would. Catherding comes to mind.

Kidding...I wouldn't subject anyone to that...

Well, I got mixed results. The main factors I was studying were self-perceptions of 2 areas: loneliness and social dissatisfaction. I compared students with and without ADHD, and also looked at the correlation, that is, do students with more severe symptoms report higher levels of negative feelings?

Basically I found this:
1. Students with ADHD reported significantly higher levels of social dissatisfaction, but NOT loneliness, than students without the disorder.
2. Both loneliness and social dissatisfaction were correlated with ADHD symptoms. In other words, students with more severe symptoms felt lonelier or more dissatified with their social life, though I could not say from my study whether the symptoms actually caused those feelings or whether the two things just happened to occur together.

The basic premise behind the study was that since past studies have shown that students with ADHD suffer some social difficulties due to the symptoms of their behavior, do they suffer emotionally or in the way they view themselves because of those social difficulties? Again, the answer for the students I worked with was mixed, as I explained above.

Hope that makes sense!
