Anyone a fan of Makoto Shinkai?

Postby coffeehubby » Tue May 05, 2009 7:17 am

From the short clips I've seen I have enjoyed his work. I purchased a film through Amazon.com from his earlier work " The Place Promised in Our Early Days" and should recieve it by the end of the week. I love Miyazaki as well. I want to work the landscapes and backgrounds as an animator, and fortunately by coincidence this town just happens to have the only accredited animation program in this part of the USA.

Anyways...back to subject, here is a clip of his work and what I hope to do!

You'll find several fans of Makoto Shinkai, including myself. If you haven't seen it, get hold of "Voices from a Distant Star", which is way too short, but gorgeous, and on the copy I have, it is packaged with an even earlier work, "She and Her Cat".

I'm hoping he will do another full length movie eventually ("5cm per second" was three shorts glued together) . He's apparently getting started on something, but I don't think he's announced what it is yet.
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
May He cause His face to shine upon you.
May He lift up His countenance and grant you peace.

Yeah, he's a genius. Definitely watch 5cms/second, the graphics are stunning and the story, heartwarming. Really good inspiration for an aspiring animator. (He does almost all of the work -animation, production, direction and even voice acting- by himself.) I also reccomend you his first short film "She and her cat."

I love Makoto Shinkai's work. The Place Promised in Our Early Days is brilliant, and 5 Centimeters per Second is heart-rending and amazing and I love it. XD I have yet to see Voice of a Distant Star, but I do own the manga version, and it's wonderful too. XD And if She and Her Cat is what I think it is, then yes I have seen it and it's ADORABLE. 8[ But yeah, I hope Shinkai puts out more work soon; he's wonderful. XD

EDIT: Just kidding, I hadn't seen She and Her Cat before, but now I have and it's pretty good. XD There's another very short animation that Shinkai did that I have seen, though, and it IS adorable. XD I did find this preview, though, which struck me as pretty quirky:

Whatever it is, it looks kind of funny. XD Anybody have any idea?

EDIT II:

Aha! This is what I thought I'd seen. It's a music video directed by Shinkai. XD And it's a hamster, not a cat. And it's adorable. XD

I would be a Makoto Shikai fan as well! As far as I know, I have every movie that's been released in the States, and they are all magnificent, though my personal favorite is The Place Promised in our Early Days.

I certainly hope he makes more, there just aren't enough anime of that quality with so little (if any at all) objectionable content!

This might cause some controversy, but I very much think Makoto Shinkai is probably going to be heading the next generation of Anime greats. His artwork in The Place Promised to Us in Our Early Days & 5 Centimeters per Second is really astounding. Now all he needs is to brush up on his story and plot, & he might surpass Miyazaki in terms of the quality of his work.

For those interested, this sitefrequently posts English transcripts of Makoto Shinkai's blog posts & has a link to his blog.

I had always been wanting to watch Makoto Shinkai's work, but I never got around to it until last fall, when I watched Voices of a Distant Star and She and Her Cat. And fell in love with it. Later I also watched 5 Centimeters Per Second, which for now is my favorite by him, and I have yet to watch The Place Promised In Our Early Days, but I hope to soon.

I find his art to be wonderful, and though his character designs aren't the most unique and recognizable, I think that's what I like, at least for his work. Shinkai always seems to present us with strangers to relate to, everyday characters we see on the street, and let us see their pains, their thoughts, hopes, and dreams. I love that.

I have a bunch of the titles here now, but I haven't gotten around to watching most of them. I think I'll have to, now.

I want to get 5 Centimeters per second however it costs about 75 dollars used on Amazon.com. I will not download it illegally either. Not my thing.

I actually rented it from my local video store, but I also know that Netflix has copies for rent. Not the ideal solution, but at least you can watch it. They have a really good selection when it comes to anime. :)

That probably has to do with the fact that the R1 DVDs went out of print as of last year. Personally, I'm probably just going to get the Region A BRD and get a fansub script or something.

I recently watched Voices of a Distant Star, and I felt like it was a shorter, rougher, and more sci-fi version of 5 Centimeters per Second. The Place Promised in Our Early Days, in contrast, was really different other than Makoto Shinkai's favourite recurring theme of distance.
