L Change the World!

Waaagh - they're screening it in the States! So... I found one post on another forum saying the movie was unrated but being treated as R. o.O Seemed weird to me considering the content of the Death Note manga. Has anyone seen it? Content reviews please? I'll bake you a cupcake in the shape of Stalin.

I think there may be a review on Anime News Network, Temmy. YOu might want to check there.

I tried ANN, but couldn't find anything in the way of content. I'm probably seeing it either way, but I wanna know if this is something people might object to if I saw it with a group. I know Ryuk randomly drops the F bomb in the anime sub, but beyond that I don't think there was much there.

I saw the version they ran on TV here (in Japan) a couple months ago, so I don't know if that was cut or edited, but I didn't think it would merit an R rating. Basically, the story has nothing to do with Death Note except in the shallowest sense. The most offputting content was the violence, as the main badguys were bioterrorists with a virus that manifests by excessive bleeding and boils all over the victim. That gets kind of gross. There's also a stabbing and an electrocution. This just off the top of my head. There was no sex whatsoever, and I can't say what the language in the subtitles will be like (having watched it in the raw.)

That said, it was an absolutely terrible movie in pretty much every aspect (story, characterization, pacing, visuals, everything.) Kind of painfully so. I don't exactly recommend it.

I got a copy from my local video game shop (He sells a little anime too), and I have to say that I actually liked it. The plot was a bit confusing for me at first, but after I watched it a second and third time, I caught on to what was happening. Granted, the violence is a little extreme, and the blood level is completely unexpected as compared to the previous two (near-bloodless) films, but, if you're looking for a good watch, I think you'll find it in "L: Change the World".

Sweet - thanks for the reviews guys. I'm so hyper fangirling in anticipation right now. Probably going go down and get my tickets either today or tomorrow (whaaat? Temulin is actually *buying* tickets like a normal person? o.O)

I have nothing against omake, but they pretty much threw all Death Note canon out of the window, so I thought that was worth a mention. This is not a movie for Death Note fans; it's a movie for L fans.

And if you're looking for a movie for fans, go for it. But don't go expecting the intelligence, mind games, and general quality of the original manga or you'll be sorely disappointed.

I want to go see this too! But the closest theater is a half hour away and I can't drive....

I'm hoping I can see it on Wednesday before or after youth group.

Saw it. Loved it.

In my arrogant opinion it comes down to two factors: 1.) You're a Death Note/L fan and you like it. 2.) You aren't a fan... you won't really care for it.

The plot was decent - not as deep as Death Note but as a good of a wrap up to L's story as could be expected. I don't really see where it "throws DN canon out the window" - it was pretty faithful to the material except for L surviving and hence no Near (at the very end...) and Mello (which I actually thought was better written than the manga - the series took a dive after N and M started to take over. Felt cheaper).

Well, what else would you expect our sweets loving detective to ride around in...other than an Ice Cream truck.

Odd question, do they really have Crepe trucks in Japan like those seen in the movie???

Saw it on Wednesday. Loved every bit of it, even though the audience was mostly L fangirls. I actually think L is pretty cool and Kenichi Matsuyama played him well...for the third (and final) time. The plot was good, if a little flat, and the SFX were amazing (especially the disease). But if you're not an L or Death Note fan, then this film isn't for you.

I'm definitely buying the DVD.

My stupid theater didn't have it, which didn't surprise me. What did surprise me is that they didn't have Dragonball. [/mini-rant]

That might be a good thing seeing as how they butchered that series...
