It needs more than just free ROAM. It needs free PLAY. Do what you want and add some extra stuff in there that's just for fun.

Except Zelda isn't an RPG so your statement makes no sense.

No, it's not even remotely close to an RPG.

An RPG is a game in which statistics are used to determine combat and situations rather than the player's own skill. In other words, you're not going to win against the final boss in a Final Fantasy game at level one with no equipment, because your stats are too weak.

However people have beaten Zelda games with only 3 hearts and no equipment upgrades. In other words, their skill determined the outcome of combat, not statistics.

Therefore, Zelda is not an RPG in any way, shape, or form.

Well according to Nate's logic fish, God of War is not an RPG at all.

No, turn based games are turn based games. RPGs are those games where you are required to grind.

Only if statistics are involved. Chess is turn based, but it isn't an RPG, because there are no stats.
Robin wrote: RPGs are those games where you are required to grind.

Ah, not so! I said RPGs are games where statistics determine success in combat. That doesn't mean grinding. In Final Fantasy IX you can beat the entire game (even the optional boss) all at level 1. Why? Because of the equipment. Equipment alters your stats, and the right equipment can alter your stats enough for you to be able to beat even the big bad boss at level 1. However, if you were at level 1 and did NOT have the right equipment, you wouldn't have good enough stats and would be destroyed in the first round.

Again. Stats = RPG. Grinding has nothing to do with it, although obviously, if you grind your stats will go up, so many people do grind in RPGs.

Yes, ctually. Pokemon is a great example. In FACT, the only step of difference between the Pokemon games and early Final Fantasy games is that whereas in FF you have between 3 and 4 characters on your side engaged in combat, Pokemon develops some mild beginner's strategy in forcing you to choose which of your "party members" must face the enemy.
