Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann

Postby theanimeguy » Tue Jul 15, 2008 4:20 pm

Hey guys I have some concerns regarding the content of the anime show Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann. I hear from many sources that this show is one of anime's greatest shows ever and I really want to but the dvds coming out soon but I am worried if it has a lot of nudity, or sexual jokes, references, situations ect. This is partly because Gainax has done this series and their other shows (particularly FLCL) have some pretty mature content in them. Any help will be much appreciated. I don't hear too many bad things regarding this but I want to know for sure. I hear that episode 6 is the real only bad part of the show. Can anyone enlighten me on this, thanks.

though i've never seen the anime, myself, i've read several reviews about the series and most of them have at least some mention of the anime's fanservice which is supposedly moderately frequent...

Simply put. One major character wears a bikini top and shorts that would make Daisy Duke blush.

All. The. Time.

But it gets tamer as the show progresses. Or rather I am just too blown away by the mind numbing AWESOME of the series to notice the fanservice.

Yeah, it does seem a little heavy on that sort of stuff at the beginning, but once it gets on to the important (that is, awesome) stuff, all of that fades away.

Yeah, but at least this time she's older.

Not just Yoko, several of the girls wear skimpy clothes. There is also a good amount of innuendo.

My point, it is indeed really good, sensible through all the nonsense, but it's not for kids.

Nnnn, I tried to refrain from calling your claim out, but I can't.

I think the only other girl besides Yoko that regularly wears skimpy clothes is Kiyoh, which is like, a tubetop and short spandex pants. Even then, 10 years later, her clothes become very modest. Not several.

Even besides the fan-service, there's quite a bit of innuendo throughout the whole series. It's not always necessarily gratuitous, but if that's the sort of thing you're sensitive to, then I would suggest staying away.

I agree. The innuendo's a bit frequent, but it's not as bad as Dead Leaves or FLCL, which are both by the director of Tenga Toppa Gurren Lagann. However, kids under about 12 should stay away.

Ehh... I watched a couple of episodes on Sci Fi and I couldn't stand the fanservice, but if what others say about it getting less over time is the case, why not pick up later or something? And maybe get a synopsis of the earlier stuff.
I myself found it to be quite weird, loopy, and really a hard watch. But that's with only a few episodes...although I'm not going to continue anyway.

Hmm I've yet to watch this, but I have a friend who's been attempting to get me to see it due to it's 'awesomeness'. Good to have a headsup about this before I do break down and check out the first episode.

Well, the fanservice goes away, then it comes back. Personally, I just looked over it and enjoyed the over-the-top craziness.....especially the last few episodes that are ust so wild, it's a blast.

I've been wanting to check this out, but it's not exactly the kind of thing my family would buy... :P How particularly is it awesome?

I just finished watching this show, and it is awesome. It is so over-the-top, corny, and just plain ridiculous. The fan service was annoying in the beginning, but luckily, it began to tailor off as the series went on...

Let's say you reach a part that you believe is awesome. You think it cannot possibly get more awesome than what you just saw.

After that, it becomes more awesome.

It's hard to explain, really, why it's awesome. At its heart Gurren Lagann is a coming-of-age story for a group of ragtag adventurers and rebels, set in a scifi world.

Very good characterization for major characters and many of the minor characters helps plenty. The plot gets wackier, but the execution of that wacky and absurd plot is so incredibly consistent, and the characters are really likeable, that you can't help but be swept away by it all, and declare it awesome.
