Aw, has nobody else seen Kikaider? If you can find it (which I had a hard time doing), watch it!

Full Metal Panic (24).

I would have thought .hack//sign was short, but its like 40. so i guess not:lol: I only considered anime long if it was like a tv show that ran for several seasons (Inuyasha, Full Metal Alchemist, etc.)

The thing is, medium is now the new age long series. Back in the day, a long series would have been 49 or 52 eps, but its not anymore. Most series are now 24 or 26 eps long, with a few being longer.

I saw Kikaider. Forgot all about that classic! Loved it!

Oh, ty for clearing that up for me. That's sad, I'm a fan of longer ones. Grant you it can be overdone and continued long after all relevent scenarios/info have been used, but the longer an anime, the more you can understand the characters and the world. This saddens me.

"The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say."

Really? If 26 episodes is long and 13 is short, then there's no medium. 26 is two seasons, while 13 is one. At most, the number of episodes fluctuates by one or two episodes, due to scheduling. After all, the bulk of series are either one or two seasons in length, and a handful more capping at four seasons, with a few more going on indefinitely and a few OVAs that can be considered very short series. It wouldn't make sense to me to categorize such a large proportion of shows as long.

Kikaider was a really good series! I love the animation style--it's really unique, and the story was really indepth. Why they cut it so short is beyond me!

As practically everyone else seems to be saying, Haibane Renmei (13). Possibly the most beautiful anime I've seen.

And if OVAs count, then the Samurai X ones are some of my favorite too.
You can find out things about the past that you never knew. And from what you've learned, you may see some things differently in the present. You're the one that changes. Not the past.

I liked Haibane Renmei as well! Much better than I expected.

Since, this is about shorter series. I also like the Ah! Megami-sama (Ah! My Goddess!) OVA series. The soundtrack for this OVA series is very nice!

There's a lot of good short series. Here are just some others:

Gunsmith Cats
Risky Safety
Black Lagoon season 1 and 2 (this a violent series...so not for everyone)

And, being a Gundam fan. I also like the short series like:

MS Gundam 0083 Stardust Memory
MS Gundam 0080 War in the Pocket

But, the longer UC Gundam series are better imo.

Either Kino's Journey or Haibane Renmei. I would say Kino's Joruney just because you actually do a lot more along the series than in Haibane but they are equally great series and both only 13eps long too.

Technically speaking, since the typical show is 24-26 episodes long, and most people here are talking about 13-long shows, isn't this the "short- and medium-length" anime thread by now? ;)

Not a single mention of the Hellsing Ultimate OVA series? Bah. You may all take a fail cookie from the fail cookie jar.

Xenosaga, Strawberry Marshmallow, Someday's Dreamers, Diamond Daydreams (or otherwise known as: Kita e: Diamond Dust Drops), Paradise Kiss, Kamichu, Haibane Renmei (already mentioned), ROD the OVA (already mentioned), and Chance Pop Session...

Those are all my best picks or basically the only short-series I have viewed thus far. XD

Now and Then, Here and There
L/R: Licensed by Royalty (not the best, but it's so British.)
Hakkenden: The Dog Warriors
Boogiepop Phantom

I'm holding off on adding Mononoke until I've actually watched the whole thing, but so far it's incredible.

That was the one that was in uber-HQ and my display couldn't handle it at the time, if I remember right... I need to give it another try sometime soon.

Ah yes, Giant Robo. Of course.

Adding Le Portrait de Petite Cossette OVA and the Pet Shop of Horrors OVA for you horror buffs.

Master of Mosquiton and Nightwalker: Midnight Detective are hardly the "best," but I like them anyway.

Having just finished it, I need to add Spice and Wolf. Spice and Wolf is a 13 episode series in which the main character, a merchant, meets a wolf-deity, and embarks on an exciting adventure where we explore the subject of medieval economics. That and Moyashimon, which is an 11-episode show about microbiology and features chibi-microbes, have shown me that you can make an anime about absolutely anything.

I eagerly await an anime targeted at my demographic, which will be a compelling show about theoretical computer science or pure mathematics.
