read a few volumes of the manga. I think it's like Ninja Scroll with Romeo and Juliet.

Read manga, skimmed anime. I've said it before, but this series is notable for sticking to it's premise. It promises you ninjas killing each other and that's the entire thing.

There is a lot of near nudity. A couple Kouga are seductresses, and one of the Iga women fights topless with an all-purpose sash wrapped around her chest. Also, they have a man who can hide inside walls, but only his body (no clothes or weapons). This plus a number of villains being borderline rapists, that should give you an idea. Almost nothing is explicitly shown, however. Convenient fog and camera angles and scene interruptions.

But is it any good plot wise and well animated/designed? I saw the set the other day and the box set was absolutely beautiful but I never heard of it before. As long as their isn't much Ninja Scroll type sexual content or an over abundant amount of nudity or extreme graphic violence (Elfin Lied), content doesn't bother me much. So it sounds ok in that department. But is it well developed and does the story actually end well (not as in a happy ending perse but actually ties everything up... nothing is more annoying than starting a series and getting a crappy ending like Berserk or Trinity Blood... Even Wolf's Rain had a pretty stupid ending like everything was rushed at the end)

Technically spoilers, but this is meant as an answer to your question:
The plot is utterly straightforward, as I mentioned earlier. Various political factors lead two ninja clans to fight one another. Though there is some movement among locations and a few complications, that is essentially what happens in the rest of the series. The ending ties everything up... because practically every character in the entire series is dead.

As far as animation/design, that depends on your standards. My general bar for decent animation is the first episode of Samurai Champloo. Basilisk is far from ugly, but it fails by that standard.
I just finished this and since there really isn't a review for this I thought I should point out there is a lot more sexual content than I was expecting based just off what people said in the thread earlier. Incase anyone is back searching information on this anime, I would definitely rate this in the 18-21 area.

Like was said before there is hardly any flat out nudity, but there is a lot of strategically covered nudity. That stuff didn't bother me though. What did get me a little uneasy was the many attempted rapes and groping. And then a woman is tied up and tortured while half naked by the guy who just raped her earlier. There are at least 4-5 intended/attempted rapes (lots groping, ripping open shirts, screaming, moaning and crude talk going on during these as well), a short scene of two people having sex in a flashback and then a much longer rape/sex scene near the end (again nothing shown but still it's quite disturbing...). Also, while this wasn't a big deal to me, one woman does take off her top to fight and they don't bother covering anything during this part but its completely non-sexual. I guess she lost her all purpose sash the first time she fought :P

Overall I enjoyed the series well enough but I was really put off by the amount of times that stuff happened.

...my friend recommmended it to me...I watched it... and... I really don't know wht to think of it XD. I know i used the Fast Foward function PLENTY of times...

the ending, although good, wasn't what I wanted..XD what's wrong with a happy ending?!

and the entire time I was watching this i was thinking:
why in the HECK don't Oboro and Gennosuke just call the stupid thing off?! I mean they were fighting over a 400 year grudge and it all just seemed so pointless that everyone had to die!

Also...
Tenzen is a horrible person! >_< (yaay captain obvious)
This anime made my day really depressing lol...

I don't really recommend it to people who dislike loads of violence, repetition and the Shakespearean tragedy ending... XD.

Shinobi: Heart Under Blade? That was a good movie. It was a Romeo and Juliet style story but interesting and had a lot of sweet action scenes in it. I would definitely recommend it.
