"Christian Game" - I made one

Have a video game or or VG review? This is the place to to discuss it! We also accept discussions of board games and the like, but SHHH! Don't tell anyone, OK?

"Christian Game" - I made one

Postby uc pseudonym » Mon Aug 25, 2008 11:23 am

Immediate disclaimer: not really - I created something with a prebuilt engine, which isn't actually the same as making a game. But it does play, and if you like the genre it should be fun for the 4-8 hours it will take you to play through the storyline.

To download, go here: antagonist.theproject.us

More specifically, this is an RPG. The gameplay is nothing groundbreaking, but I feel the storyline is something I haven't seen done in exactly this way. What I wanted to do was find a way to show how I feel a game could communicate a profoundly Christian message.

This is all I plan to do with game creation, really, but I hope people will enjoy it and give me their thoughts.

This is a really great game. I can't believe that you made this, you've really got some talent man. I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to save, but then I was able to find where the menu was and did save. So thanks UC! I intend to play some more tomorrow.

Im up to the point where you can talk to Apostle Joel for healing. I thought that that would be a great place to stop. And I have Abel in my party.

Can't wait to play somemore tomorrow! It's a good thing that I saved that link so It'll be easier to get back to the game.

I've downloaded it and have started to play through it. So far I'm impressed however I don't like that when your in battle, the only place you can see your MP is where your techniques/skills/magic/awesome powers of awesomeness are located. Also it would be nice to be able to see your MP when you decide to use an item that restores it such as an S Serum.

What did you use to build the game?

Thank you for the positive responses. A few assorted things here:

animedude90 wrote:I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to save, but then I was able to find where the menu was and did save.

Make sure to check the Readme file that came along with the game. A few of the keys aren't intuitive (like Alt for the menu or Esc for fleeing).

I would have liked that as well, but unfortunately this aspect of the battle system would be fairly difficult to change.

More information is also in the Readme, which is essentially a compilation of a lot of potentially useful notes.

Ahaa! Interesting. I've been looking at RPG Makers XP and VX for a project I've got in mind, but I'm still shopping around. Thanks!

I haven't been able to get into it much, as I currently hold a very busy life, but I am thoroughly impressed with what I've seen so far. I've played way way way too many bad home made RPGs and thankfully this is one of the better ones.

One quick observation: Atheist Assassin does not equal someone who assassinates atheists.

That threw me for a while. I kept on expecting some poor atheist to stumble in and die.

I downloaded this last Wednesday, but only got around to playing it today. So far I enjoyed it, although I was annoyed by the fighting system and had to get used to it at first. Now I'd like to play it more when I get the chance. :)

Heh, that'd be a very different kind of character. I assumed people would take the adjective in the same sense as "Christian" but I suppose there are always different ways to interpret anything. I'll have to keep that in mind if I ever rework the titles aspect of the story, but I'm not sure how to avoid that.

That is good to hear. I didn't expect you to have time to play it this soon.

Looks interesting, I'll check it out when I have more time and give you feedback. Me and my bro plan to honor and promote God in the media industry.

Perhaps we could team up one day, UC.
Some of my favorite scriptures.

Psalm91
A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.
Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.
Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;
There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

Hebrews 4-4
1Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.
2For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
3For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.
4For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.

James 4
Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

Revelation 22:14
Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

I just finished the game and was very impressed. In the interest of my busy schedule, can you tell me if there are multiple endings?

I am glad to hear that you enjoyed it. To answer your question: no, there is only one ending. I actually intended to allude to this in the Readme by using a singular article concerning the end, but that's admittedly obscure.

Part of what I wanted to do with this game was utterly remove choice from the player's hands, forcing them to watch as the characters commit actions that they hopefully feel are wrong and march toward the inevitable conclusion. That's why a number of the Yes/No choices have no actual impact on gameplay, though I really could have done more with this aspect.

I realize this is gravedigging, but I think it's warranted in this case. I tried to go look at the game via the link you gave in your first post, but Google Chrome is giving me this warning:

That's because there is no actual game, just a ploy to get people to download viruses.

Thanks for mentioning this. A while ago the database had a vulnerability exploited and it added a quick <iframe> to all the pages, apparently even mine. Easy enough to delete. The html looks clean to me now, so Chrome shouldn't give you that error message anymore.

Lol, I saw the other "Christian Game" thread and then this one.. I was like,"Whoa, did UC finish the game already :o?" xDD;

Yeah, that's been happening with some sites lately :-? It seems any site associated with a site that contains malware will get a bad rep :-?

The only problem for me is that I have a ppc mac. grrrrrr. I would like to try it but I am currently separated from my PC. A mac version, if possible, would be a big help to me.

I am impressed with the idea and it looks good from what I can tell. Keep up the good work!
