Check out Resident Evil 4:thumb:. That is very first RE game I played and now I'm hooked on the video game series.
Some of my favorite scriptures.

Psalm91
A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.
Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.
Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;
There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

Hebrews 4-4
1Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.
2For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
3For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.
4For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.

James 4
Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

Revelation 22:14
Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

I'd say go for the collection of 0, 1, and 4. Unless that costs the same as buying them separately, in which case I suggest either 1 or 4.

The thing is, RE4 is entirely different from the other RE games that were previously released. Whereas the older ones ((and I can't really say about 2 and 3, since I haven't played them yet, so I'm only assuming there)) were slower-paced and more puzzle based, RE4 took a jump into action and dropped the heavy emphasis on various puzzles.

IMO, both styles of games were awesome, just depends on your tastes I suppose. So, if you're looking for some action, jump straight to 4, if you want something to think about a little more, go for the first 1 and work your way through the series and story.

RE2 was my first, but unless you have a gamecube or N64, you probably can't go with that... Hmmm, the one you're talking about is Code Veronica X, if I'm not mistaken, and that was the second RE game I played... very, very creepy. :) Four is on the PS2, as well as Outbreak, files 1 & 2...

If you can get your hands on a GameCube there's an AWESOME Resident Evil 1 remake. In my opinion though RE4 is without a doubt the best in the series... and (since I'm a sick freak) I've played ALL the Resident Evil/Biohazard games... *_*

Here's my 2 cents. If you'd like to follow along with the storyline of Resident Evil from the beginning, I'd get a hold of the first 3 games in the series for the original playstation. They're all great games and should serve to give you some practice for what's ahead. You can find them all over eBay for pretty cheap. The excellent "RE: Code Veronica" should be next, followed by Resident Evil Zero and the Resident Evil 1 remake for the Gamecube if you can get a hold of one. Finally to end it all, without a doubt the best game in the series....RE4!

Or....

Like Yuen Fei Lung suggested, you could just play through the first Resident Evil (the GC remake is KILLER, so I'd suggest that over the PS1 version), squeeze in Code Veronica if at all possible, then jump right to Resident Evil 4 after you've wikipedia'd everything that happened in between. I can't really recommend this personally as you'll miss out on so much, but if you're in a real big hurry to catch up, that should do it. :)

This is my personally recommended playing order:

Resident Evil (PS1)
Resident Evil 2 (PS1, Gamecube)
Resident Evil 3 (PS1, Gamecube)

A side note on 2 and 3: I recommend tracking down the PS1 versions over buying the Gamecube versions for the simple fact that the latter are rediculously overpriced for decade old games.

Resident Evil: Code Veronica X (Dreamcast, PS2, Gamecube)
Resident Evil 0 (Gamecube)
Resident Evil REMAKE (Gamecube)
Resident Evil 4 (Gamecube, PS2, Wii) *Wii version recommended for obviously better controls*

I liked Resident Evil Remake very much. Quite scary. But, it depends on whether you like more pure survival horror or more action. RE4 is very fun. But, it's definitely more action. I think RE5 from the trailers looks to be a lot of action as well.

And, I agree with others that you probably should play them in order. I know it seems more people liked RE2 best. Or a lot of newer gamers like RE4 best. But, somehow I like RE Remake and RE3 best.

The RE remake was goooooodddddddd. Very scary. Very unexpectedly creepy, beyond the scary stuff. All around awesome.

Oh geez, if I hear the snarling sound those Regenerators make one more time, I may wet my pants.

(Translation: RE4 is one of the best games I've ever played)
