Anime or manga that have made you CRY?

Postby minakichan » Sun May 04, 2008 10:03 pm

I can't be the only one who's done this-- anime and manga are art forms too, and they can certainly elicit extreme (and sometimes irrational) cathartic reactions. List series that have made you cry-- even just a little tearing up-- and what made you cry specifically, funny stories or circumstances, etc. Stoics and manly men, too, I demand you admit it! (Over)Emotion is nothing to be ashamed of!

My list is really, really long (like... 15 series? o_O), so I'll start out with some highlights:

-The first anime I cried in was Pokemon when I was 9 or something-- the Butterfree farewell episode. I thought it was very sad =( At that point I kind of didn't know much about Pokemon, but I DID know that I really liked butterflies >_>; Haha, I was a weird kid.

-I cried at the end of the first "arc" of Hikaru no Go
when Sai leaves
in middle school because I really, really loved that series and I was depressed because I thought it was over and I would NEVER BE ABLE TO READ HIKAGO AGAIN. Turns out there was another arc after that, the Hokuto Cup, but I really disliked it, so when the series ended for good, I was just angry.

-Deep Love ~ Ayu no Monogatari, during high school. A series I actually had reason to cry through. I could not SLEEP the night after I finished marathoning the series. It was super-cathartic; probably the most simultaneously depressing and uplifting series I've ever read. The story's about a teen prostitute, and the original mobile novel was powerful enough to get a lot of enjo kosai girls to even quit their services after reading it. (Also proof that shoujo manga is certainly NOT all fluffy wish-fulfillment.) What really sucked was that in the sequel series, Host,
after Aya painfully pays for Yoshiyuki's lifesaving operation with her own body, he turns around and goes right into the sex industry.
It really felt like a slap in the face. Host and Reina (the joint sequel series) also made me cry, although not as much.

I teared up a couple times during Hajime no Ippo. It's so emotional at times.

Also, I cried a couple of times during Sailor Moon.

Oh, and don't forget Gundam 0080. If you don't cry at the end of that series, you have no heart.

hmmm its kinda hard for me to get teared up over an anime, i think... but i remember the first time i ever saw Full Metal Alchemist, it was the episode with Hugh and his daughter...
And Hugh dies.. and his daughter is all "why are they burying daddy? How is Daddy going to go to work tomorrow if he's in there? Can you tell daddy to wake up??? wake up daddy! wake upp!"
and i was freaking tearing up and biting my lip like OMGGG ;3; WHYYYYY.

EDIT: also, when i was younger, the farewell pikachu episode made me cry. :[

I rarely cry in movies/books/anime/manga, but I have gotten choked up a few times. XD Most notably:

Full Moon wo Sagashite:
Episode 42. Absolutely soul-crushing. XD When Mitsuki walked up to Eichi's grave and said something like "so this is where you were," I think I died a little. XD I was depressed for a whole day over that episode. XD

I also got choked up in the last few episodes when Takuto lost his memories. ASDF. Killed me. XD
AirTV:
I remember episode 11 nearly had me in tears during the "mama!" scene. I also got a little choked up in the final episode.
Rurouni Kenshin:
I definitely got choked up when Kenshin left for Kyoto in both the manga AND the anime. XD The anime had the more emotional setting with the music and colors, but the manga was just as much of a tear jerker. Or, well, in my case, an almost tear jerker. XD
20th Century Boys:
In my second read-through, I find myself getting choked up more often. XD When Sadakiyo makes his first appearance and he cries when he sees the little boy who got beat up, that choked me up. XD The same happened when Sadakiyo's old teacher remembered him after all those years...so sad/happy! XD
There's rarely an anime where I don't sob. Heck, even di gi charat brought tears to my eyes (cuteness overload).

on the other hand, anything live action I laugh at. ie: passion of the christ

I'm a big baby when it comes to shows and movies and stuff. Even if things aren't really that sad, I cry. haha

Trigun - only one scene....or two, lol
Eureka Seven - these were tears of joy, okay! maybe...
Fullmetal Alchemist - I cried a lot
Karas - on the second DVD when Otoha almost dies
Bleach - when Byakuya stabs Ichigo and Rukia leaves with him
.Hack//roots - when Haseo is all sad about that girl being in a coma
Blood+ - the last episode isn't something to be happy about

I'm positive that I've cried on more series, but I can't remember them all right now.

I'm such a dork, lol.

Sailor Moon
Mahou Sensei Negima (the anime ending is just--yeah)
Probably Fushigi Yuugi
Mmm, can't think of any other ones--Oh! Bleach, when I thought my favorite character was going to die.
The end of Azumanga Daioh made me sad, too.

Grave of the Fireflies

I mean, dang...I saw it for the first time the night before we left on a mission trip --we were telling my friend afterwards, "Why did you show this to us? Now we're depressed."
"Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

Yay for crying =D

Everyone I know who's seen Grave of the Fireflies has felt ridiculous hopeless and despaired afterwards. I love depressing anime, but I don't want to feel suicidal, so I'll skip that one, even if it is excellent.

Other series I can remember crying to off the top of my head:
-Full Moon o Sagashite (last chapter of manga)
-08th MS Team (Saw it in middle school, apparently the ending was really sad. I can't remember a thing.)
-Monster (the ep with the former soldier and the little Burmese girl, that was beautiful. Also, the end left me pretty hopeless, so I teared up a little)
-Death Note (not for anything emotional, but because it was over)
-Battle Royale (read about 10 pages and felt overwhelmingly nauseous. Cried myself to sleep.)
-Darker than Black (sad that it ended, but the ending was pretty amazing too)
-Romeo X Juliet (this one I cried insanely in episode 8, because the whole tormented forbidden love when you KNOW the characters are going to die was so intense. Stronger than Shakespeare...)
-The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (I don't know why I cried for this one...)
-Ouran Host Club (YES, I cried during OURAN. At the end, **** that it was over.)
-Welcome to the NHK! (The ending was just so bleak and depressing, even if it wasn't meant to be. It just depressed me terribly.)

I cry a lot when it comes to stories, no matter what medium they're in. Anime is, of course, no exception. Here are the times I remember.

Full Metal Alchemist:
I cried in the episode where Nina died - really hard not to cry when Ed is sobbing his heart out in the rain over the splatter of blood on a wall that is the only remnant of such a cheerful girl. Also, the episode where Hughes died - he was my favorite character, so naturally he had to be the first to die, didn't he? I also cried in the last two episodes or so, with Ed dying and the brothers being separated and just the series being over. This probably seems over-the-top, but I was depressed for at least a week after the end of FMA.

In the manga, I cried multiple times in the chapters where first it seems that Mustang killed Ross, then it seems that Mustang is dying, and then when he comes and kills Lust. Those chapters were intensely emotional for me.
Wolf's Rain:
I cried or teared up all through the ending, what with all those deaths and everything. The part that made me cry the most was when Toboe died, and then Tsume says goodbye to him.
Haibane Renmei:
I teared up when Kuu 'died.'
Jin-Roh: Wolf Brigade:
The ending, obviously, left me in a wreck of tears and depression. Still, that remains my favorite tragedy to date.
Rurouni Kenshin:
I can't really remember, but the scene where Kenshin says goodbye to Kaoru before going to Kyoto made me cry, or at least tear up. At the very least, it made me cry on the inside.
Trigun:
I teared up at the episode where Wolfwood dies and Milly is left bereft.
What a cheerful topic this :waah!:
You can find out things about the past that you never knew. And from what you've learned, you may see some things differently in the present. You're the one that changes. Not the past.

I cried at the ending of that too. *eyes CAAers* No making fun of me either. . .

Sailor Moon, I cried, at some parts. Grave of the Fireflies and I was bawling the last half.

I know there is more, but I can't remember at the moment. *is braindead currently XD*

Finally! Someone else who understands!

"That episode" of Trigun made me tear up, but not cry too hard.

I'm sure there's been more anime that's made me cry, but eh, I can't remember it too well. Still, Full Moon wo Sagashite stands as the number one media item that has made me cry the hardest. A record previously held by Star Ocean: The Second Story.

I admit that I've cried harder at movies than anime. I dunno, for some reason they tend to hit me harder.

Anyway, the Sailor Moon S movie makes me cry every single time. >_>

The ending of Beast Master. So sweet, but sad!

Grave of the Fireflies made me choke up and get a little teary eyed. That was mostly due to I was watching it with friends and so didn't want to be a total L0S3R in front of them. XD I mean come on, the marble.... in her mouth....yeah, that's all I'll say.

Haibane Renmei the part the_wolfs_howl mentioned got to me as well but still no actual tears! They like to become stuck in my throat! ^__^

The only movie that truly brought me to tears was the Korean animated film: Oseam

The part where:
Gil-son (he is the five year-old protagonist) contracts leprosy and freezes to death after being left alone in a Buddhist temple for weeks by the monks.
Though in Mobile Suit Gundam Seed I was glad when:
Flay dropped like a fly. I was shocked at first because I didn't see it coming though.
I mean did anyone else find her annoying or is it just me? I couldn't find one redeeming quality about her.

Haibane Renmei, two points:
Episode 13, the whole scene with Reki in her studio
and
Episode 7, in Rakka's room, when Rakka grabs the scissors and Reki stops her
...but that last one only after the second viewing -- once I realized what that really meant...

There has been only one time where I've cried over an anime. Wolf's Rain, but...
NOT when the wolves died. Yeah, Toboe's death was a little depressing but no. Cher. I was so **** off and fussy over Cher's death, I didn't even caaaaare. I LIKED CHER. Yeah, her and Hubb were having some marital problems, but my God, they're the only anime couple I even care to acknowledge. BUT WHEN THEY FINALLY SOLVE THEIR PROBLEMS... SHE SUDDENLY DIES. It was horrible. But it was prolly the best anime character death I've ever seen.
But yeah, only once.
