Anime Musical?

Postby Scarecrow » Sun Mar 09, 2008 11:34 pm

I was just curious... is there such a thing? It would be fun to see if there was.

Actually... that just reminded me. What initially introduced me into anime was the Daft Punk video for their song "One More Time". That used to play all the time on MTV:2 and while the song was quite addicting, I really loved the video. I know it was part of a whole anime movie of sorts called Interstella 5555 or something like that was animated to the music of Daft Punk (I believe I saw most of it on Youtube now that I think of it... this was ages ago but anyway).

Is there anything else like this out there? (and GOOD)

(I need to go find that Daft Punk movie again)

Very seldom have I seen singing in anime. Maybe a couple of old childrens movies, or anime about idols. But I don't think I've seen actual anime musicals.

broadway style musicals done after anime do exist, and they are most amusing.

Though you seem to be talking "anime music videos" as opposed to "anime musicals".

Well actually I meant a real musical. The Daft Punk thing was more of a AMV as it turns out. I still think its cool and stuck it in my bag for next time I go through and buy some stuff but, na I was looking for a real musical. Like in the vein of Moulin Rouge or something as opposed to something like a Disney film.

I'm not holding my breathe. But it would be cool if they did. Even though I'm not a fan of the actual songs by themselves, I do like a lot of anime openings that are visually great and generally fast paced (RahXephon, Fate/Stay Night second opening, Record of Lodoss War etc). I think some trippy action/fantasy/romance musicals would be pretty sweet with all they could do artistically they cant do in live action.

There are live stage musicals put on in big halls in Japan, pretty big stuff. I've seen about 3/4 of all of the Prince of Tennis stage musicals (I think there's about 10-12); they have real actors (all male...) singing and dancing and waving their tennis rackets in the air like escapees from an insane asylum.

It's great fun. =D Actually it is, some of the music is pretty good, the choreography is entertaining, the fanservice is CRAZY. The actors are AMAZING dorks though, it's insane. (Most are either stage actors or TV idol actors, a few singers here and there. Miyano Mamoru, who played Light in the Death Note anime, acted as Ishida Tetsu in Tenimyu before he became a seiyuu. Ladies, if you think he's some suave and sexy prince, YOU THOUGHT WRONG. 100% DORK (but a good-looking one who can sing))

There are also myus for Bleach, Air Gear, Utena, Sailor Moon (AVOID THIS ONE!), Hunter X Hunter... Lots more I can't remember.

I had something to say in this thread. Yesterday. But now Debitt's posted and I feel like the third man.

And yes, there are Anime musicals. Bleach and Air Gear have both been adapted into stage shows in Japan, and notoriously Pokemon into the Broadway scene in America. No, I am not kidding.

For actual Anime Musicals (not adaptations to stage) the main show that comes to mind is Nerima Daikon Brothers, which has everything including the spontaneous songs about stuff thats happening. It's been compared to Blues Brothers (on wikipedia).

I dunno about y'all, but I REFUSE to consider Pokemon Live in the same category as Tenimyu, Burimyu, Airmyu >< When I say "anime musicals are insane" I do not mean THAT brand of insanity.

I've heard of the live-action "myu" stuff, but I've never actually seen any of them. I'd check some of them out, but I'm not a fan of any of those anime, so...XD;

I think it'd be cool to see animated musicals come out of Japan. Sadly, I don't see that happening anytime soon.

I guess a Japanese anime studio would have to work with Disney to create a anime musical.
Just look at the number of musicals they have done over the many years.
Then acourse other American animation studios have done a musical animation almost similar to a Disney animation.
Then what would anyone want to see done as a anime musical? Edo period love story? Modern day teen love story.
Maybe "How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying" type musical.

Anything... well, you can make just about anything you want a musical if you get creative enough. It wouldn't bother me really. As long as its not like... My Fair Lady or something.

Moulin Rouge easily my favorite musical. Anything over stylized and contemporary as opposed to "the phhaaaaaaantom of the ooopeeerraa is there"

I've always thought something like VHD:Bloodlust would make a great stylized Gothic horror musical :D

Actually, there are anime musical. Di Gi Charat is one, where cute little catgirls sing every episode. There is a sailormoon musical as well, but it is live, and thus not an anime.

Tezuka Osamu, famous for initially imitating Disney, said that some of Disney's moves just wouldn't be popular in Japan. One was talking animals, rather than cute humans, as the stars; I imagine talking and singing animals were no different. *shrug*
