Hello

Postby Tundrawolf » Fri Feb 22, 2008 4:18 pm

Hello,

My name is Dave, I am 28 and enjoy anime. My favorite is Wolf's Rain, there are many parallels to Christianity in it, but it adheres closely to Japanese mysticism. I have a wolf, his name is Mishomi.

Here we are: (The camera is a phone unit so the picture isn't colored right)

Here he is smiling!

Well.. I started visiting a wolf sanctuary here in CA 6 or so years ago. I bonded with a particular wolf, who was removed from his packmates because he wanted to fight. The problem is he loves people, so it was difficult for him to be isolated.

Wolves also have an innate fear of humans, if I suddenly stood up in front of any of the wolves, they would jump back and be like "Oh my, you just got a lot bigger!". Except for Mishomi. Mishomi will just knock you back down to the ground, not because he is upset, but because he has no fear of people.

It's a good thing and a bad thing-a good thing because it allows me to wrestle with him and generally interact with him more than I could with a normally socialized wolf who has a healthy fear of humans. A bad thing because if-and when- I fail to follow wolf rules-he can become upset. Fortunately, wolves never hurt each other in the wild, they need each other to hunt.

Anyway.. not too many people are allowed in with him, because it can be a terrifying experience to be knocked to the ground by a 200 lb animal that is as fast as a cat and strong as a bear. One guy used to visit Mishomi all of the time, but he moved and now no longer visits him so much.

The thing about wolves, is that they are very social animals, they need contact, or they become reclusive and withdraw into themselves (very bad). Tonya, the owner of the sanctuary, told me that if I ever leave Mishomi, he will simply stop eating and drinking-I have read about this thing before, with wolves.

They're not like a dog so much, that can have a new home. Once you bond to a wolf, you are that animals everything. As far as ownership goes, they need a good space to live, with tall inner fencing, and adequate outer fencing. To be fair to the animal, you are looking at a minimum of $15,000 worth of fencing, plus property, permits, etc. Their howls can be heard 3 miles away (And can sound 1,2,3,4,5,6,7, am and beyond)-your neighbors have a right to complain!

It's *really* hard to own a wolf legally, and if you are not intimately familiar with their body language, (You really can't *ever* be 100%! Trust me!) and in tune with your own instincts, ("You're about to be bit! Back out slowly and pray!") you might just have to throw the wolf over meat and appreciate it from outside the pen. I have been bitten, and it isn't fun. They have the power to completely sever the large portion of your leg, bone and all!

Picture a completely manner-less dog, that is huge, and moves like a housecat. Now, picture this dog loving you, but not unconditionally. Picture the dog that can have a bad day-and can be offended, and can carry a grudge-for months. Picture a dog that has 2" incisors that has no problem, if you provoke it-unintentionally-it makes no difference- plunging them into your flesh.

It is a lifetime-of-the-wolf relationship. You cannot take a 2 week vacation, or even a one week vacation. You cannot have the wolf in a dog pen-wolves can jump straight up, and can scale an 8 foot chainlink fence. They eat red meat and chicken-no dog food. No hamburger. The meat bill for 16 wolves is over $3,000 a month.

Also, the wolf will not respond to you like a dog will. It doesn't generally return affection. The most heartwarming thing Mishomi has ever done is to curl up inside my 'lap' as I was laying on my side.

Image

Image

Wolves are capable of smiling! Mishomi jumps straight up in the air when he sees me, and smiles when I am in the pen with him. I think owning a wolf for most people would be a costly and unrewarding endeavor.

I'm sorry, I like talking about wolves.

Oh wow nice. At first I was a bit taken aback that you 'owned' a wolf but now I see. Must be realy cool to be able to be in such close contact with such a beautiful and powerful animal.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. This forum is great.

As far as the Okami goes ( :) ) it has its ups and downs. For example, over the past few weeks Mishomi has been...upset. It's mating season, and we're both male-which makes us possible enemies-for now, at least. Mating season is always the season to keep an eye on the furry howlers-they become other animals. He has been snarling at me, growling at me, and generally being intimidating (Which a 200 lb animal that can look me eye to eye when he stands up-I am 6'1" can do).

I laid my hands on him, because his whole face changes when he gets upset-he looks UGLY. Demonic, even. Not at all my cuddly puppy (not that he's the least bit cuddly. soft-yes-but cuddly-no.) -I realize he is a wolf, but he is also my gift from God. I spoke over him, and had a believing in my spirit that he would be OK. I spent one of the neatest times with him today, than I have had in a long time.

Of course, he tore two holes in my dress shirt (Luckily it was cheap) and gave me some love-nips, which are great if you're a wolf and have a protective layer of fur. Not so good if you have skin and don't enjoy scars. And yes, I am truly blessed from above to have such a relationship with Mishomi. It would have been easy for me to give up on him, several times, but I will not give up on what God has given me.

Here are some more pics of the cruel and mean general.. I mean the wolf.

Here he is raiding my pockets, like he does. It's a strategic issue to get anything he takes back. If I get it back in one piece it is a miracle. Money is an issue.

Notice his paw on my shoulder... You can translate his face as: "Why for you bite me?" P.S. If I wasn't ABSOLUTELY SURE I would still have a FACE after I tried this I wouldn't have done it!

Paw to the face. Occasionally, I will be taking a picture and something unexpected happens.

He looks like a teddy bear in this picture. I am not sure why.

I wish I could put him on a leash and take him with me, everywhere I go. But alas the property damage lawsuits and pet-snacks he would encounter outweigh any benefits (Well, for everyone but me, anyway) I would have by having him as my constant companion. Also, the fact that he could literally pull my motorhome intimidates me, a little. I look at those pics and I just want to squeeze him-but he'd bite me terribly if I did that.

Mishomi means "Grandfather" in English, because when he was very young, Tonya observed that he was "very wise".

Tonya has a term for the wolves that not just like-or tolerate humans, but love people, she calls them "healers". Mishomi is a "healer" wolf, because he loves people.

It is sort of sad to see people walk by his pen, because he is a BIG wolf, and his size is intimidating. He will even sit down (A submissive stance) for a stranger, put his ears back and show whites of his eyes, meanwhile pushing his 200 lb frame against the chainlink fence so that the person will touch/pet him.

Very, very few people will actually ever give him a scratch, even though in wolf language he is submissive begging them, and their fingers are truly in no danger.

Even more unfortunate is the fact that he has no fear of people and is aggressive with other wolves-I'm sure you can see why he is isolated. It makes for a wonderfully interesting interaction with him-and I can wrap my arms around his massive neck and give him a hug-a big dominant technique-and he will rarely move out of it.

I do not try to dominate him actively so much, I am merely showing him human affection-and I believe that even though it is (To a wolf) entirely dominate behavior, he understands that I am showing him affection.

Most of the time he will actively ignore me, only coming by to lift his front leg up, to tell me, it is time to be petting him, now. I am blessed to go into his pen when he is laying down, I always snuggle up to him and he rolls over to his side, and I just lay there with him.

He will always thrust his paws out and push on my chest with them, Tonya says it is because wolves like to "feel" you. As he falls asleep, the pressure he is exerting on my chest will gradually decrease until his paw simply plops onto the ground. You can tell when he is in deep sleep because there will be a gap between his front incisor teeth, big enough for a fly to get into (And they do).

And yes, he dreams, like a dog. His massive paws moving when he is running, his teeth chomping lightly when he is eating, and a manner of small, faint sounds uttered from his mostly closed mouth. It is a fantastic experience to be within inches of him when he is asleep. I should also say, that when he wakes up-unless I am looking right into his eyes, I will not notice it. Wolves do not wake up like dogs with a start, usually.

Welcome to the board Dave, and WOW, is Mishomi big.

I have a German Shepherd that's semi-feral - raised on a farm or something and sleeping outside right now - refusing to come in despite the 30 degree temperature outside. He's really skittish, afraid, and definitely a one-owner dog. Seems to me that rescuing a dog like that is as close as I'll get to rescuing a wolf (and thankfully, the food bill isn't nearly as high).

See you round the boards.

Well, with dogs like that, it's sort of like taking a Toyota pickup truck 4x4ing on Mount Everest without a rollcage-with a wolf, it's like taking a Caterpillar D12 20 ton earthmover offroading without a rollcage. Either way, if you screw up, or a rock goes out form under you, you'll be in a bad spot.

Wolves generally are indifferent to you. When they are attached to you, unless you are intimately versed in wolf language, you may never even really know it. They have a wide tolerance for human error, so to speak, but they do have their limits-and you don't want to reach those limits.

With a dog, with a little education you can be well versed in their behavior-wolves are much more subtle.

Here's a pic (Taken out of context, Mishomi and I were playing-he was asserting a very submissive position-with sound, posture, and body language-or I would *NOT* have done this. I like my face and would like to keep it, thank you very much!) of us. Notice the distance between our noses. (I also posted this in goof off)
