Revenge and its Consequences

Postby Lochaber Axe » Wed Mar 17, 2004 7:27 pm

I am in need of some help finding scriptures on revenge. I already know that revenge is a corrupting influence and many times leads to the mortal or even mental death of the avenger. Any help on better understanding revenge through the Word would be appreciated.

Leviticus 19:18
"Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord"

Deuteronomy 32:35
"It is mine to avenge; I will repay. In due time their foot will slip; their day of disaster is near and their doom rushes upon them."

Romans 12:19
"Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: 'It is mine to avenge; I will repay,' says the Lord."
"The secret of a good sermon is to have a good beginning and a good ending, then having the two as close together as possible."

Mt. 5:38-39
You have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.
But I say to you not to resist evil: but if one strike thee on thy right cheek, turn to him also the other.

Revenge is also a failure to forgive

I'm not sure where this is, but SOMEWHERE in the Bible Jesus talks about forgiving people not just 7 times, but 70x7. As CDLviking said, revenge is a failure to forgive.

[i]Two vast and trunk-less legs of stone stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand, half sunk, a shattered visage lies. Round the decay of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare the lone and level sands stretch far away. On the pedestal these words are inscribed:

“My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!â€
