Looking for good PS2 titles

Postby Sammy Boy » Tue Jan 22, 2008 4:09 am

I know the PS2 is now an old console, but because of its large selection of games, I decided to buy a PS2 today.

I have never owned a PlayStation before, so I reckon most of you who have had one or still own one know that I've been missing out all these years. :)

I am looking for good PS2 titles that you'd like to recommend. Specifically, I would like to know if there are any good co-op play games.

I am also interested in good RPGs for this platform. I have only bought three games, Final Fantasy X, God of War, and Tekken 5.

So feel free to recommend away. Thanks. :)

Devil May Cry 3, Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3, Soul Calibur 3, Splinter Cell: Double Agent, Dragon Quest VIII, Dark Cloud 2, Tomb Raider Legend and Anniversary, Kingdom Hearts I and II, Rogue Galaxy... All I can think of off the top of my head.

You'll enjoy God of War.. I know I did.
Also, when you beat it, pick up God of War II.

Anyway, I highly recommend Jak II. Great game by Sony.
Also, if it is for PS2, get GUN.. A great Western game. Oh yeah., it's gruesome, but an amazing game, Mortal Kombat: Armageddon.
And don't be afraid to pick up some Hitman.

God Of war is amazing as is II but i won't recommend 2 till your comfortable with the first ones content. I agree with Liar he game Gun is pretty fun decent story as well, a bit of sexual content to be warned of. MK: armageddon ahhh not a big fan of jusdt because i can never get into the newer MK games, they are fun to play but pretty average unless you devote a lot of time. Hitman games are fun as well just content warning. So i agree with all of Lairs recommendations except maybe MK. Also Ico and Shadow of the colossus great epic. Devil may cry 1 and 3 2 sucked but if you want to follow the full story, Resident evil 4 is amazing one of the best action/horror games ever. Metal gear 1,2 and 3. 1 is for original ps but still amazing. final fantasy 12 for sure along with kingdom hearts and Rogue galaxy oooh and if you can Disgea long hull game but sense of humour to beat all, hard to find though. Phantom brave is good as well, also sorta a task to find.

You could maybe try some of the Metal Gear Solid games.

As for co-op games...hrm. Not sure about that one.

Also, I love Guitar Hero I and II. You have to buy the guitar, but it's gotten a lot cheaper now.

If you like RPGs, you could also try the Suikoden series. I haven't played them yet, but my fiance raves about them. Though the fourth game is apparently not so hot.

I don't know if you'll like it or not, but I seriously adore Final Fantasy XII. Also, Zone of the Enders 2 is excellent and you can play it without having played ZOE. The Metal Gear games are fantastic. If you like fighting games, also try to track down the Guilty Gear games like X2 in particular. Let's see...I concur about the Devil May Cry games with the exception of 2. I wasn't a fan of it but 1 and 3 are brilliant action titles. Okami is very good, also. Katamari Damacy is fun. I can't think of much in the way of RPGs that I really dug on the PS2 other than the FF games...Xenosaga 1, perhaps. I haven't played the others. Can't really think of much else.

Some of my favorite scriptures.

Psalm91
A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.
Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.
Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;
There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

Hebrews 4-4
1Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.
2For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
3For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.
4For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.

James 4
Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

As for co-op games: X-Men Legends/X-Men Legends Rise of the Apocalypse are good games. Though in my opinion between the two the first is the best. Also, Ultimate Alliance but I prefer Legends a little more.

Also, Phantasy Star Universe 1 and 2 can go co op. I know for sure the second is co-op. It's a neat futuristic RPG.

And I think Harvest Moon titles are fun, it's a game you play when you have nothing else to do.

Other great titles for the PS2: Sly Cooper, if you like a good puzzle/collecting a ton of stuff games Sly is awesome. Plus, the story is cute and funny! I mean come on what other game let's you play a Raccoon Thief with a talking turtle and pig as cohorts?

If you're into RPG's: I love the underrated games: Odin Sphere and Grim Grimorie are two wonderful RPGS but they're not for everyone. Grim is a bit slow paced at first whereas Odin Sphere's story picks up rather quickly. Both games are set in 2D graphic form so at times levels look and feel repetitive but the battle system though simplistic is a lot of fun! It's different from the Square Enix battling formats!

Star Ocean: Till The End of Time: That game is EPIC! It'll give you 90+ hours worth of play. The story is amazing and most of the characters you'll love. I know this title is dubbed as "The game everyone starts and never finishes" but don't let that scare you off! I, for one, finished the game and never once thought "Oh my goodness when will it end!" ^__^

Also, GrubbTheFragger, is right on with the games ICO and Shadow of the Colossus. Those games are epic! If you own any games whatsoever for the PS2 those are definitely titles you should consider to have in your collection.

You can't go wrong with a Final Fantasy, especially if you love RPGs ( like moi ) :thumb:

But I highly suggest you try something like Ocean Star. Plus, you can't go wrong with Kingdom Hearts I & II. If you like them enough you may be tempted to get the Kingdom Hearts: Final Mix. ^.^

I'd recommend KH too. I'd also recommend Soul Calibur 2 and 3, especially the 3rd one. It lets you create your own fighter. Can't go wrong with that kind of feature! Plus, the same people who made these games also made Tekken, so if you're doing well there, you'll probably do well here too.

Thanks for the advice everyone. It seems hard to get PS2 titles in some of the shops here (I live in Australia).

So whenever I see a title that I have heard people say good things about or that I believe to be go, I just buy it (as there is a 7 day no questions asked return policy if you're not happy with the game). So far I have bought:

- Kingdom Hearts I and II (Australia doesn't get the Final Mix version I believe)
- God of War I and II
- Soulcalibur III
- Tekken 5
- Final Fantasy X
- Lord of the Rings: The Third Age

Since I already have Resident Evil 4 on my GameCube I decided not to get it again. I also have X-Men Legends I on GameCube, and II on PC.

I would love to either get Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance I and/or II, as well as Champions of Norrath, but there seems to be no stock here.

Anyway, I've some games to keep me occupied so I think I will be ok. :)

Just to inform you Ultra Magnus, RE 4 on the PS2 has some exclusive features to its version not found on th GC. But its up to you.

Ooo, I might get just as much use out of this as you, Ultra Magnus!

Drakengard 2 is a cool game. It's alot like Dynasty Worriors. Don't get the first one though. It's the worst game I have ever played. The story for the second one is understandable even if you haven't played the first.

Like GrubbTheFragger and Yuhoxholic said, Shadow of the Colossus is awesome! Some of the best boss battles and game music that I've ever seen and heard!

As for co-op games... the Dynasty Worriors games are pretty cool.

Any of the Metal Gear Solid games, the Guilty Gear series, Shadow of the Colossus, SOCOM Us Navy Seals 1, 2, 3, and Combined Assault, Splinter Cell, Star Ocean, Dark Cloud, and Timesplitters 2 can make for an awesome party game if you've got a multitap and friends into shooters, and it's pretty cheap ((probably $10 tops used)).

-Okami. If there's a Zelda-killer out there, Okami is it.
-Beyond Good & Evil. One of the most overlooked and underappreciated games on the PS2.
-Silent Hill 2. Considered by many SH fans to be the best of the series.

Most of the games I would recommend have been mentioned, so I'll just put this gem (maybe) up for consideration.

Gauntlet: Legends (I think that's the right subtitle)

Justification: I would get it used/cheap because it isn't a stellar game, however, it makes for a good coop time waster. It's a 1-4 player RPG that has completely brainless mechanics (anyone can pick it up in 30 seconds) and repetitive gameplay, but if you don't mind a grinder RPG, it has some competitive elements that make coop play a challenge (don't let your friends near pointy objects though, sometimes the rivalry gets fierce ;) ).

Thanks for the recommendations.

I have now bought: Shadow of the Colossus, Ico, Star Ocean: Till the End of Time, and Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (but this is a GameCube game).

Valkaiser - I bought Gauntlet: Legends and tried it out for a night, but returned it the next day because I didn't like it a lot (I felt in this aspect X-Men Legends were done better).

Anyway, I just bought a Wii today, along with Zelda: Twilight Princess, and Super Mario Galaxy, so going to be busy on that for a while. :)
