hi from Irv

Postby irvnnan » Wed Dec 12, 2007 12:22 am

Hi:

I'm Irv and I've become an anime fan in the last couple of years. I hadn't paid much attention to anime until I became involved in a project of looking in to the idea of producing an anime version of the story of Jesus. I started watching some of the films by Miyazaki, Oshii and others. Reading Wired and recent articles in the last few years I realize what a global tidal wave anime and manga has become. Wow.

Watching Spirited Away, The Cat Returns, Stand Alone Complex, Ergo Proxy etc. helped me see what a different world anime comes from and some of the incredible imagination and beauty that were in some of these films that I was totally unaware of. Watching Blood and Ghost in the Shell II I realized how cutting edge the work is technically and how much spiritual topics and the nature of man and the soul are woven through these films . I see it now as a huge part of the visual medium of a new global generation.

The idea of a anime version of the story of Jesus has been moving forward. You can see two animated storyboard versions we've worked on. (I work with the JESUS film - that film on Jesus done in 1979 and translated into 1000 languages). My friend Barry actually directed these two sequences. I mostly acted as a producer but I did some compositing work on one section. Let me know what you think. They are in 30 languages up at http://whoishe.org/animationproject. They were not done for a whole lot of money so the talent was local to Orlando rather than being able to find an artist in Korea or Japan. It doesn't even reflect anything near final character designs of what Jesus, Peter or others would look like - it is more the story telling style that hints at how something like this could be if it were done well in anime.

Thanks again to whoever put this site together!

Hey Ridley:

Yep, I've been working on the JESUS movie for about the last 21 years now. I showed it as a student in Northern Kenya back in 1984 for a summer. I didn't know how my artistic leanings and computer science background could relate to missions and telling people the Good News back then, but when I ran in to the Jesus Film Project it all came together. I helped write prototype software initially to help get us from the analog tape based realm for making new translations to digital audio technology.

This latest idea of an anime version, based on the dialog lines we have recorded in over 1000 languages now is the latest amazing turn for me. It's still a faith thing because I have no idea how God is going to bring it all together, but I can personally testify that He has done amazing things already in my life, through the JESUS film, and I believe he has awesome plans for using anime, the Internet and other cool things for helping people come to know Him personally.

Be blessed in Jesus!

Greetings Irv! *bows and salutes*

May you have fun with all of us Christian Anime lovers! If you have any questions, do not be afraid to ask us.

It's awesome that a person like you has joined this site. I was hoping to see a version of the Jesus movie as an anime. Is that still going to happen?

Hey Cephas:

I'm trusting and praying it will come about. We have a writer/director on board who's been carrying this project even more passionately than I have - he has a real vision for it. He's a great brother in the Lord - Barry Cook. He co-directed Mulan for the Disney company along with some other short films. Right now we are in a scripting phase with Barry. He's working on this part time while doing other directing and story development jobs. We are also trying to develop some funds to do some visual look development - a phase all potential films have to go through in order to clearly show the look of the film and what the characters would look like.

I think a high quality film done with top notch artists could be a great tool - a great way for anime fans to share the story with their friends. What do you think?

Some of the films Barry has been inspired by have been Millenium Actress for it's unique story telling style, Ergo Proxy for it's economy of motion but high quality art direction and of course Ghost in the Shell II on the higher end side. The obvious idea is to do hand drawn for the characters and a lot of 3D elements for backgrounds and some of the props the way Studio IG and the others have been doing for the last several years.

Please pray for the Lord's direction on the project and for the next steps as God brings this idea to your mind! Thanks!

will it happen?

Postby irvnnan » Sat Dec 22, 2007 8:07 pm

Hey Cephas...

Thanks for asking. Yes, Lord willing it will happen. We are launching out into a brief, fully animated segment that we can test - probably just a minute or two. If you know much about animation production, you know it takes a while. What anime film example would you cite if you had to say "it would be so cool to see the life of Jesus done in anime like in the film..." ?

"The Transfiguration of Jesus" is what I would love to see, along with the trials, the crucifixion and the resurrection.

Oh yes, I did an interview with Barry about the project that you can see at http://www.whoishe.org/feedback/index.php?sec=video&links=homelinks which kind of gives you an idea of the project. By doing something within the bounds of the JESUS dialog we already have recorded it could in extremely short order be available in the native language of pretty much anyone that uses the Internet.

I've posted two quick replies, but they haven't shown up. Does someone decide whether they get posted?

New users spend a while in probationary status in order to catch trolls. During this time, suspicious posts (try to avoid links and lists) are caught by a filter. I've approved yours in this thread for the time being. Post normally for a while and you won't have to worry about this again.

anime Jesus and community

Postby irvnnan » Sat Dec 29, 2007 7:52 pm

I've got a question for y'all. Maybe I should start another thread, but my question is, how much do people who fancy themselves artists spend time on this site? One of the reasons I ask is that one of the things I'm thinking of is for the idea of an anime version of the life of Jesus to become reality, part of what is needed is greater awareness of the idea, involvement from the community, prayer support, even artistic ideas.

If there was an online way to have a contest with a couple of cash prizes, like 1st and 2nd place or something, would people be likely to participate? The idea is for several different portraits of Jesus based on an image from the JESUS film. So different styles and treatments of the scene. Something looking more like anime done in Korea, or Japan - rotoscoped, CG, simple line drawings, detailed Photoshop versions, etc. Do you think that would be a cool contest? How should it be promoted to get the word out?

Thanks for the ideas...

First of all, welcome. ^_^ It's awesome to have people here who are really working to create Christian anime. Hearing about God's role for each of us in this area is great (I've been called to write, and God's been giving me great ideas. ^_~). I hope that everything works out on your end; you seem to be working very hard.

A well done, anime version of Jesus' story would be absolutely amazing. As for artistically well-done anime films, I'd look to Miyazaki's work (Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Princess Monoke, etc.) but I think it'd also be good to look at all different types of series because some of them have very unique art styles.

There are many artists on this site who post their work in the "original artwork" and "graphic design and computer art" sections. I suppose you could make a thread for the contest there, but I'm not sure about giving out cash prizes. Maybe you should PM one of the mods about that.

In the meantime, have a happycake and enjoy your stay. [^_^}o

~Rushia

P.S. Oh, I just noticed the "art contest" section. ^^;; That might be the best place to promote the contest.

There are quite a number of artists on the forums. However, an anime production is a huge venture on all levels (time, talent, money). An image contest would probably produce results, but the world is some time away from an actual Jesus anime, unless there is a company with one under production.

Well, yes actually. That's what I'm talking about. The JESUS Film Project (one of the ministries of Campus Crusade for Christ) is actually pursuing doing such a film. The idea is to base it on the dialog we've already recorded in 1000 languages for the JESUS film. However, instead of a more linear 'beginning to end' telling of the story the way the JESUS film does, it would be more of a character based retelling through the eyes of those closest to Jesus, probably 7 short films actually (think of the Animatrix). If you Google search on 'Jesus Film Anime' the top link will probably be an interview about this idea last year with Greg Gregoire, the Chief of Staff of the Jesus Film Project.

This came about because of the interest of Barry Cook (you can search for his name on imdb.com) and a burden God has laid on his heart to do such a film. By staying within the bounds of the dialog we already have, such an anime could be available in virtually any language as soon as the visuals are done (see the storyboards in 30 languages at the links above). Right now Barry is doing story work development and we are about to do some test animation while we are seeking to develop funding for the full set of films as well as get ministry strategy elements in place.

So I don't know if such a contest should be mentioned here if it happens, but with all the 'how to draw Manga' books and the existence of sites like this, it seems like such a contest would be a good way to engage people with the idea and generate some interesting artwork. It is also a huge item for prayer. What do you think?

*_* a Jesus anime? that. would. beamazing!

if there was such a contest for conceptual art and stuff, i would definitely want to participate.

one thing i'd really like to see is for the art to be historically (is that the word?) and Biblically accurate.
i'm not racist or anything, but i have a pet peeve about white-skin blue-eyes Jesus. i imagine he was probably swarthy. and i've seen waaayy too many depictions of him as a pretty boy, which he wasn't. i don't know how you'd work that into anime form, with all the bishounen styles... but whatever. i know it's not about the art, but i just thought i'd put in my two cents.

it would be so cool to see an anime version of Jesus' life, though.
Superbook and Flying House were great when i was a kid, but... ^_^;
