Postby mitsuki lover » Tue Dec 11, 2007 11:39 am

Ok in this thread you can ask me any question you want about Anime.
The rules are:
1.No Personal Questions.
2.No Sarcastic Questions.
3.Only One Question Per Post.
I will try to answer from 1-5 questions(determined on how much time I have)
per day.
And remember these will be my opinions so if you are offended it's your own fault for asking!;)

Well, I would challenge you for 'Curmudgeon' status, except that I'm pretty sure that there's a few guys around here older than me who could just come along and knock me off, too!
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
May He cause His face to shine upon you.
May He lift up His countenance and grant you peace.

Here you go, ML. F&C is challenging for the title of top curmudgeon. Should we let a kid taunt us like that?

I don't think F&C is challenging for the title. I think he's saying he'd rather consult someone that actually KNOWS something about anime, like say, Wikipedia or Anime News Network.

NOTE: Despite my wording, I am not implying that you don't know anything about anime, Eric. XD

Okay, here are a few questions.

1. Gainax studio use to called something else and what year did the studio changed its name to Gainax?

2. In episode 5 of FLCL, when Haruko changes into a bunny suit and flies on a guitar was a reference to this short anime film?

3. In Cowboy Bebop the movie, the mysterious Rasheed was based on a real person. Who was this man and what job did he do for the movie?

1.-3.I don't know really.
I should have said no trivia either. What I was hoping for was something like:What do you think of 'so and so anime'?What is the best girl and gun anime ever?,etc.something with a little more meat in it.

Since ML didn't answer, I guess I will.

Both images are from "Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure", usually just called Dual! and generally thought of as a parody of NGE (I've never been convinced of it, myself, but perhaps the creators have claimed so. I can see the cognates of characters, but....)

And I think I agree with ML; you shouldn't annoy Curmudgeons with trivia questions (unless, of course, your actual goal is annoyance). You're just going to get a "Boy! I ain't got no time for that!" answer (or edit to get the appropriate regional dialect). Maybe because the curlmudgeon doesn't know. Or, maybe because he's watched so darned much Anime, the trivia has faded into... trivia.

It's like Baseball trivia. The guys that are good at it are always in their teens and twenties. Somebody like me, who's been watching for 40+ years, has 40 years of actual baseball memories and doesn't have enough hard-drive space left for trivia.

But if you just like poking sticks at Curmudgeons, that's the way to do it.

I'm going to ask ML a question I think is a good Curmudgeon question, and challenge him to ask me back. Sort of an old-geezers-sitting-around-the-cracker-barrel scene. Feel free to join in.

ML: What do you think was the best Mecha story of all time? Any sub-genre, any era, never mind the improvements in technology. Who made the best Robot Pilot yarn?
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
May He cause His face to shine upon you.
May He lift up His countenance and grant you peace.

My answer to 'Best Girl and Gun anime ever' would have to be "Noir." There will always be a warm place in my heart for Dirty Pair, but "Noir" is the most thoroughly engrossing story I've ever run across in this genre.

Gy273 wrote:What do you think is the best anime ever made? (Does that count?) :)

Wow. All genres? That's... mind-bending. Can I even do this?

I"m restricting this to Japanese Anime. I have a great fondness for a number of non-Japanese works, but I wouldn't want to try to rank them as well. Too different.

I'm going to go with the movie "Beautiful Dreamer", part of the Urusei Yatsura franchise, even though you can't really follow everything without knowing the characters from previous UY titles. You can still follow enough to thoroughly enjoy it.

Five other movies tie for second place: "Ghost in the Shell" (the very first movie, predates the TV series), "Galaxy Express 999", "Roujin-Z", "Spirited Away," and "Paprika".

I will answer the question that I gave.

1. Gainax studio use to called something else and what year did the studio changed its name to Gainax?

Before the Gainax name. The studio was called Daicon Film. Hideaki Anno, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, Takami Akai, and Shinji Higuchi created the name, when they were college students and was working on an opening video for Daicon, which was a sci-fi convention in Japan.

The name change to Gainax on Dec 24, 1984 and not 1985 as some people believe.

2. In episode 5 of FLCL, when Haruko changes into a bunny suit and flies on a guitar was a reference to this short anime film?

Daicon IV was the name of the short anime film.

When Hideaki Anno, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, Takami Akai, and Shinji Higuchi did the openings for Daicon III and Daicon IV, they made it to be one big animated video.

The Daicon III film was short, but the story was a little girl going on a Sci Fi adventure.

The Daicon IV film takes places years later with the girl from Daicon III all grown up, with her wearing a red bunny suit and surfs on a sword called Stormbringer and Haruko in FLCL wears the same bunny suit in the ep of FLCL.

3. In Cowboy Bebop the movie, the mysterious Rasheed was based on a real person. Who was this man and what job did he do for the movie?

Rasheed was a Moroccan guide that went with the staff in scouting for locations in the area.

I would like to know what ML's answer is, too. But, I thought I'd give mine.

Gy273 wrote:I thought there was only Japanese anime, shows how much I know..:)

Well, 'anime' is just the Japanese word for Animation. It doesn't mean specifically "Japanese Animation" to them. But I, like most others in the English-speaking world, think of it as meaning specifically the product from Japan. In my previous post, I just thought I would clarify, since I'm fond of many works out of the US and Canadian industries as well.

I always end up thinking about a friend of mine from Japan, when this subject comes up. After finding out we shared a common interest in Animation, I asked him, "So, what's your favorite Anime?"

His answer: "Probably 'Fantasia' or 'Heavy Metal'."

I tried to clarify, "No, like Anime on TV."

"Oh, TV series?... I really like 'the Simpsons'."

I gave up at that point.
May the Lord bless you and keep you.

Thanks for the answer! Maybe I'll check "Dual!" out sometime. I didn't consider that question a trivia question so much as a basic info question (i.e. I didn't know the answer myself, and I wanted to know what anime the jpg image was from). I never intended to annoy.

Anyway, as for a more... in-dpeth question for mitsuki lover... what is the best "Magical Girl" anime of all-time, in your view?

1.Best Mecha ever(aside from Neon Genesis Evangelion and Dual)I would have to say that that would have to be Big O.I like the way that
it kinda does the Batman thing plus the film noir style of the animation.
And Dorothy isn't a bad reason either!

2.Best Anime Ever Made(aside from my favorites)I would have to say
movie it would have to be Only Yesterday, whilst tv/OVA I think
Haibane Renmei.

That because it does. Warner Bros. had Sunrise as a subcontractor for the animation work in Batman: TAS. Some of the people from Sunrise that work on Batman: TAS took their art style and use it for Big O.

Another point to make is that in Batman beyond, Terry McGuiness usual outfit that he wear on the street is the same combination of tan jacket, bluish-black undershirt and black slacks and shoes that Roger Smith had on in episode 7.
