Don't trust them wholeheartedly, Aileen. It took a week for my ordered copy of RuroKen volume 28 to come in. Though I can't stay mad because they've got an extremely cute checkout clerk whom I was calling "Bookstore Girl" until I found out her name. It's Irish. Really kawaii (although I'm sure her boyfriend thinks so too).

*Ahem* Anyway, I've just picked up Hunter x Hunter volume 1. It's off to a good start, I think I'm really gonna like it.

I'm currently on FMA Volume 2. I must agree that I like the manga better than the anime (even though that was very good --the manga just has more to offer--I mean, they had to cut out some stuff to make the anime).
Of course, I have to discipline myself. My schoolwork must get done. I'm already behind on my reading and I have 2 papers due after Thanksgiving...so...I must resist spending too much time reading FMA (even though I really would rather be doing so...;))
"Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

Well, it's a bit more than simply cutting out a little of the manga's story to make it fit the anime. After around volume seven, the story in the manga takes a different route entirely. New characters are introduced, plot points are completely different from the anime, familiar characters get MUCH more in the way of development, and in my opinion, it's just better-written all around. It's really an excellent, excellent series so far, and it's holding my attention rather well. XD

Manga(s) (Is that even the plural form...or is it Mangae?):

Death Note Chapter 5 (Chapters 6 and 7 are under my bed, gathering dust, waiting for me to read them), Peach Girl, .hack//legend of the twilight and Full Metal Alchemist Chapter 1, which still have yet to reach my house (yeh, I'm reading FMA for the first time ever despite watching my first and only episode).

I have been doing a countdown recently to having read at least 1000 volumes of manga. Having completed it, I have not been reading that much except for regular chapters. This is probably natural, as I have other goals that are coming to the forefront.

The plural of manga is manga, like many Japanese words (or moose).

Old Boy volumes 1-4

a random read that i picked up through sheer chance. old boy is a dark and very realistic drama that intrigued me with it's fairly interesting plot concept. the lead character is quite likable and i'm very curious to see where the story will go...

Houshin Engi Volumes 1-5

Just after my above post, I begin looking at another series. This one did not impress me much at the beginning, but the plot is slowly developing and gaining my interest (though I still hate the character designs).

I'm going through Full Moon O Sagashite Vol 2-4 at long last. I had to wait for them to be an early Christmas gift before I could finally read them.

Old Boy volumes 7 and 8.

i am somewhat disappointed with the series' ending. i figured that there'd be a lot more action and that the ending would be more epic, or climatic. overall, the series was somewhat satisfying. the characters were quite interesting and the psychological aspect of the series was intriguing.

Samurai Deeper Kyo vol.24

Fairly entertaining volume, if slightly predictable. Although for four legendary Berserkers so insanely powerful that they needed to be locked up for the safety of those who created them, the first two fell rather short of expectations. That sort of send off demands you last at least, bare minimum, longer than one volume.

And note to True Indara: work on your timing. When your technique is manipulating people against their will, and your associate is someone who believes the good guy betrayed him, now is never the time to tell the good guy that it was you who previously mind controlled his former friend into killing him, nor in front of said associate.

If you make a call like that, you deserve to die in the volume you get introduced.

Hunter x Hunter

It's probably not worth a thread, but anyone here following the recent releases? Only two more to go (presuming they stop after the promised ten), which means this will either end on a cliffhanger or things are going to be resolved immensely quickly. I have my thoughts, but is there anyone here interested in discussion?

I am not that far in the series yet, but... more characters? Even at my earlier point in the story I'm rather sick of new super special awesome characters being introduced at every turn.

decent story and likable characters. unfortunately, the story tends to drag in some areas...

And would that be Naoki Urasawa's Happy?
UC Pseudonym wrote:I am not that far in the series yet, but... more characters? Even at my earlier point in the story I'm rather sick of new super special awesome characters being introduced at every turn.

Not so much more as introducing more, but heavily hinted at earlier. The trick is that the author is always revealing new characters under the pretense that we knew they'd resurface anyway. The Mibu Clan is controlled by the Four Elders, so you know they'll be a few more when you've only met two. Although with the way things are currently going, the population cap has nowhere to go but down from here.

Then again, I borrow a friend's copies or read it off bookshelves, so I can't complain.

It's probably not worth a thread, but anyone here following the recent releases? Only two more to go (presuming they stop after the promised ten), which means this will either end on a cliffhanger or things are going to be resolved immensely quickly. I have my thoughts, but is there anyone here interested in discussion?

if you're looking for someone to discuss HxH with, i would be happy to. however, i'm not as far as you because i am following the release of the graphic novels, and not the scans. still, an HxH discussion would be pretty sweet.

Blade of the Immortal vol. 3
Rurouni Kenshin vol. 3-4
Samurai Executioner vol. 4-6

On Radical Dreamer's suggestion, I've been keeping tabs on Kenshin (through bookstores mostly). First two volumes were fairly "Meh," in my opinion, but the following two have shown promise. I'll keep it on my reading list.

Blade of the Immortal continues to impress, and still remains on the top of my samurai era readings. It could have easily disintegrated into the shounenfest that is SDK, but opts to pull it off with depth and thought. And the artwork is still incredible. SDK, I read out of habit and entertainment; Blade, I read out of fascination and excellence.

I read a fair amount of Happy!, but I lost track of where I was.

Overall good read. Very enjoyable story and it was good to experience another side of Urasawa's mind.

And jon_jinn, you got that picture from my LJ, right? XD

Perhaps a thread would be appropriate (we have ones for much less popular series). How far are you currently?

I would never have continued reading RK if so many people hadn't generally recommended it. While the first volumes are not impressive, I think it improves later in a variety of ways. It is also a very important part of the history of shonen, if you're interested in that kind of thing.

Yeah, that's a good point to make. I love Rurouni Kenshin as it's the series that got me into anime and manga, but I'll be the first to admit that its initial volumes lack what the rest of the series has. XD Volume one is artistically unattractive. Two is an improvement and is pretty pivotal to a lot of things that happen in the series. Three and four both put forth a good storyline and interesting characters, many of whom are important to the rest of the series, while volumes five and six almost bored me, and only presented one character that's even so much as mentioned again down the road. XD

For anyone else reading through the series, I definitely suggest giving it a chance up to at least volume 7. The last two arcs do nothing but improve as Watsuki progresses as both an author and an artist, so if you can stomach your way through five and six, the rest of the series is actually quite entertaining. XD

if you are willing to converse with one who has merely read up to the 16th volume of HxH, then i would be delighted to start a discussion thread for this series.
