For me, it would be between...Final Fantasy 7 Spoiler below.
When Aeris dies.
It's either that or Final Fantasy 8. Yes, I mean the whole game. It was TOO easy. Play Triple Triad some, get a Laguna card, trade it in for 100 Holy Wars and then make yourself invincible. Simple...

I second Destroyer2000. When I was playing that part... I got all angry and yelled at Sephiroth... Nearly threw my controller through the television, and then started to cry.

(My parents looked at me VERY STRANGELY until I told them video games - especially RPGs - are interactive movies.)

Other ones of note (spoiler-friendly):

Final Fantasy 2/4 - Porom and Pallom.

Final Fantasy 2/4 - Rydia's Mom.

Final Fantasy 2/4 - Rydia and the big fishie.

Final Fantasy 3/6 - Celes and Cid (if you fail).

Final Fantasy 3/6 - Cyan in general.

Final Fantasy 3/6 - Seitzer and Daryl.

Final Fanasy 7 - Barrett and his past.

(Gee, we can see which series I like, right? ~_^ )

I think the dialogue Squall has with Rinoa on the road to Esthar is a pretty sad scene, considering how he opens up about his introverted behavior and whatnot. BTW, I'm playing through FF8 for like the fourth time, and I love it even more. Darn good game. Being able to get Holy Wars does not make it a bad game. It has the most emotional plot of any game I've ever played.

I like 7 the best...FF8 seemed sort of lacking to me...though I do wish they had focused on the romance part in Seven more. I can't wait till Advent Children comes out!

FFX has a tragic bittersweet ending....

Anyway, I wanted to say that the end of Hugo's First Chapter in Suikoden III is pretty sad. I mean imagine coming back....
to your village and see everybody that you grew up with and played with being slashed and burnt to death with the rest of your village. And finally, to see your closest friend, whom you swore to protect, suddenly slain in front of your eyes.
That's some rough stuff to deal with in the beginning of a game.

Saddest moments...
Heh, I automatically thought of Aeris when I read the title of the topic.

Other sad moments. Hmmmmm.
Although it was pretty cliche, the destruction and slaughter of Cless' hometown at the beginning of Tales of Phantasia was pretty sad, especially considering the music playing.

Also, the scene that happens if you let Cid die in FF VI and several of the scenes in FF IV and V are sad.

Saddest moment in videogame history? That is easy, and it has nothing to do with Aeris, or even Final Fantasy.

I am talking about the plot of Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage for the Sega Dreamcast. There is a lot of sad stuff in the game, but there was one part that actually made me cry, which has never happened in any other game.

About halfway through the game, you come to a village inhabited by twisted creatures that were once human. There is also one normal person: a nun, who cares for the normally docile creatures. However, if disturbed, they become violent, going on murderous rampages. The nun cares for them, keeping them isolated from society in order to prevent harm to the creatures or others.

This nun has more or less given up on humanity. When your character asks why, she tells the story of a young boy named Niko, who died a tragic death. He lived in the town (before it became infested with the parasites that turned the populace into mutants), wandering the streets and visiting the church. He was an orphan, with some slight mental problems. For this reason, he was always happy and excited about exploring the world. He stayed alive by begging, and by receiving charity from the nun mentioned earlier. [Note: it has been a while since I played the game, so I am unclear on the next part of the story. If anyone can correct me, please do.]

One day in the dead of winter, Niko gets left out in the cold looking for a puppy that he had found, then lost. He wandered out into the snow, and eventually froze to death. No one came to help him, or even cared when he died.

It gets worse, because not long after this, you find out that Niko is actually one of the mutants, protected by the nun inside the church. Since he is hostile, you have to kill him.

How's that for a sad story (and it is by no means the only one in the game :o )?

You mean when Vamp Kills EE (Emma Emerich)!!! That was sad, and totaly unexpected for me. It wasnt like in MGS1, where you have the chance to save Meril, you cant save EE!!!!!! Wwwwuuuuuuuuuaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!
Poor EE!!!!
Depend on it. God's work done in God's way will never lack God's supply. He is too wise a God to frustrate His purposes for lack of funds, and He can just as easily supply them ahead of time as afterwards, and He much prefers doing so.
- J. Hudson Taylor
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?" "Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet. You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times." It was all true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach. He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

The saddest moment in gaming for me was in Skies of Arcadia: Legends when...
Rhaknam dies! :waah!: Why did the arcwhale have to die? Oh, or when Gregorio and Belleza sacrifice themselves to save you. :sniffle:
Those were so sad!

Lots of sad scenes in Illusion of Gaia.
1. The pig is eaten.
2. Will and Kara are separated at the end.
3. Some others, have to remember them all; it's been a while since I've played the game.
The ending to FFX....
The ending to Kingdom Hearts....
The ending to everything else....(Oh come on....the end of the game means that you beat it...and then you realize there is no more....and then you cry)
I also think that the scene when Squally and Rinoa are going to Eshtar is pretty sad....(I just beat it 2 days ago! Aww!)

*brainlock*

The terrifying moldy bread incident! In elementary school, Yomi's leftover bread started rotting inside her desk! you can't imagine what happened! Not only that, but the mold had a will of its own, it was terrible! Barricading ourselves in the science prep room, we used spirit lamps and engaged in combat! Then I realized it!! If we only had the bottle of mildew remover from the bathroom, we could destroy them!!

The one I consider sad, since the others are "sweet"(ew, I'm a guy, too..should I be saying stuff like that?)...
When Rinoa received Ultimecia's power at the end of disc 2, she becomes lifeless. By the middle of disc 3, Squall is desperate to find a cure, so he carries her on his back down the long road to Esthar. What ensues is this..dialogue..he has with her, about how he's lonely, the facade of introvertedness he puts up, how he's afraid of getting close to anyone, etc. I just found that sad. He's afraid of being hurt or disappointed by other people, so he just doesn't grow close to anyone.
It gives a nice window into Squall's life. Good stuff.

When I realized I had 100% completed Ape Escape and there was nothing left in it to do :(. Then I started a new file and I was happy again.

Also, FFVII wasn't the first RPG to kill off a playable character.

I remember playing Phantasy Star IV.
I was really upset when, at the end of the second battle with Zio, Zio kills Alys Brangwin (main character Chaz's mentor). The only consolation is that Chaz kills Zio, too.
This probably wasn't the first time for it either, but it's the first one that I'd ever seen. I remember thinking "Aww, no fair! Can they even do that!?"

It's either that or Final Fantasy 8. Yes, I mean the whole game.

Gotta agree with ya there Destroyer. They seriously went wrong with that game. Loved FF7 and FF9 though. Ace games!

Saddest moment in video game history was...when Hamlet, the little pig on Illusion of Gaia died...that was so depressing. Whats more depressing is the fact that they never brought out an Illusion of Gaia 2. I loved that game...
